Repeal "Commend Antarctic Oasis"
A resolution to repeal previously passed legislation.

Description: WA Security Council Resolution #19: Commend Antarctic Oasis shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: THE SECURITY COUNCIL:

HOLDS the power to bestow commendations upon any nation or region which is deemed worthy of the distinction.

EXPECTS that nations and regions so recognized will behave in a manner that brings further honor and respect upon the nation or region in question, as well as the World Assembly as a whole.

NOTES with dismay that Antarctic Oasis has not always acted in such a way and that some of their more unsavory acts were inadvertently overlooked when their commendation was originally considered.

RECOGNIZES that this region's practice of "creative compliance" crossed a threshold of permissibility following the passage of GA#102, International Criminal Court, upon which region members expressed open defiance toward such a court and their intent to "shoot on sight" any and all WA compliance gnomes tasked with enforcing the resolution.

RECALLS that region members rejoiced in the passage of a home-grown resolution, GA#76, Standardised Passport Act, which created an agency contentiously named the GESTAPO.

OBSERVES that WA ambassadors from Antarctic Oasis often spend their time in wholly unproductive ways, including but not limited to drunken, disorderly, and often lewd and obscene conduct; ignoring serious debate in favor of childish food fights; defenestrating ambassadors with whom they disagree; and, on separate occasions, both flooding and suicide-bombing the Security Council.

DENOUNCES the frequency with which representatives from Antarctic Oasis promote sexist attitudes and the objectification of women, particularly with regards to the honorable ambassador for Thessadoria.

DOCUMENTS the alarming fact that members of Antarctic Oasis publicly flaunt their dissolute lifestyles within the World Assembly, which in turn tempts more virtuous nations to migrate from their original, upstanding regions to join in such debauched behavior.

BELIEVES that any region which engages in such inappropriate actions with regards to World Assembly legislation, governance, and enforcement is unworthy of a commendation.

REPEALS SC#19, Commend Antarctic Oasis.

Well, my suspicion is five fold,

1. Member-nations were deluded into thinking that this commendation could act as a peace-offering for the "Commend Jey" dispute, essentially to tell AO to sod off, in an appeasing manner.
(I know I supported it in the day to try and get as many IC C&Cs passed to try and legitimize IC C&Cs.. Rule IV later did that for me, and also left a bad taste in my mouth.)
2. Member-nations were deluded into thinking that being vexatious and actually harmful to the community (I wonder how many members have left the game because of AO's attitude? Ever wondered why WA authorship is such a smaller community?) does not negate what recognition they deserve for their 'contributions'.
3. The previous commendation, "Commend Sedge" had received much attention and controversy from raiders which highlights an interesting point, if you take away interest from the three fractions that cause the most controversy over resolutions : Raiders, Defenders and AO.. then a proposal goes without much controversy from the global community.
4. The Security Council was hungover from the pissing match of "Commend Sedge", and too tired to house a serious debate.
5. The proposal presented itself in a humorous and light image for a nominee that we should have seen through but didn't, which essentially dressed up a lemon nominee for us to bite.

1. They did made a lot of resolutions to the WA/UN and that's commendable. But it is also a fact that half of those are 'joke' resolutions. Many of these regions have a WFE that reads "XXX Region is the property of The People's Democratic Republic of Yelda"

This kind of colony-keeping is no different than invaders and empire builders.

Another consideration is this:

According to NewTexas, the AO natives want their commendation to be repealed because they hate the SC. So if they don't get their repeal now, there is going to be ANOTHER one, and another, and another....

So I'd say lets give it to them and get it over with.

Really? Half of our resolutions are "joke resolutions"? I'd honestly be curious to see which ones you dislike so strongly - preferably in another thread. We do have a history of occasionally poking fun at the WA, but many AO regulars seem to have an active interest in the WA, and we try to bring an IC element to the WA that seems to frequently be missing these days.

Considering that I have been the target of similar condescension from veteran gameplayers for not giving due deference, it shouldn't be that surprising that a sort of rivalry exists. I try to not take myself too seriously in the rough-and-tumble nature of the NS forums. I also avoid debates in NS General because I'm nowhere near resilient enough to keep my cool there.

3. All of this wouldn't matter to me. But they crossed the line when they decided to make fun of 10000 Islands not once, not twice, but three times when FIRSTARIA, because English wasn't his first language, erroneously mispelled our region name in his effort to commend us. Fair enough, but I would hope that you would recognize, as living in the largest player-created region (congratulations on the achievement, BTW), 10000 Islands is going to be the target of a certain level of ridicule. Was the original founding of 10000 Island silly and a bit petty? Yeah. But I giggled and quickly forgot about it.

Again, fair enough. But the general humorlessness and outrage fanned the flames. Considering that nobody ever posed the slightest threat to 10000 Islands from AO (or associated regions), I don't quite get it. I'd be happy to discuss this as well (in another thread), but was it really considered that threatening an act?

All right, that's just a ridiculous accusation. If Yelda created puppets and founded a thousand regions, then his regions are native founders, and I would expect that this distinction would be recognized by a decorated member of a large defender organization. They're *his* regions, and were created with absolutely no malicious intent, and involved the displacement of *zero* nations to create. I am surprised, then, that you compare this to region crashing, invading, and imply that his region founding is comparable to region refounding (against native consent), as they couldn't be more different.

They deserve no commendation.

Excellent. At least you are doing your part to demonstrate that a commendation reflects opinions rather than facts. Our work here is done.

Yelda has already stated that he only founded the satire region over a typo in a resolution...he had no resentment toward you. You invented it. It wasn't any of us. I guess I just don't understand the strategy behind alienating potential allies like AO, who are also anti-raider, after all, and have even participated in (failed) liberation attempts of small regions.

As for "joke resolutions," have a look at the rules, AD. They are illegal in both chambers of the WA. How we've managed to make them "half" of our legislative portfolio is beyond me.

Well, there really is no point in getting too worked up about some fake 10000 Islands. I mean, really, who does it hurt? I'm as dedicated to this region as anyone, but it seems a little pointless to get worked up about it. Ignoring them is a far more effective solution. And as for Yelda creating many puppet regions, well, don't we do similar things? Creating a bunch of new regions is well within his rights as a player of NS, and, to be quite honest, it's a far better method than what empire-building invaders do.

To your first defence of AO, I would point to the fact that they did it not once, but three times, after we protested and the moderators moved them. This clearly showed intent. If you think its okay for the region to be made fun of, then I have nothing else to say to you.

To your second defence of AO, I would point out that the regions TITO nations created such as Band Camp, are not named after real-life nations or places. We created those names from scratch. There is a difference there.

I don't think that it is okay, I just think that it is a matter of inconsequence. As was pointed out earlier, 10000 Islands is a large and powerful region. As with all large and powerful entities, that opens us up to a certain level of criticism and mockery (Think of the US). I think we should just accept that as being a part of such a region and learn to ignore it.

Which is why we have not taken any real actions against them, such as declaring war, which we could. Another region wouldn't have that much patience. Tiny regions which made fun of Gatesville and TP have been troops thrown their way.

That said, it doesn't mean we should forget what they did. And the point here is whether they deserve to have been commended. I don't think they do based on their actions.

They're just sitting there un-passworded and anyone that wants to can move into them and set up shop. If you look through that link you provided you'll notice that not all of them have the Yeldan flag and "property of the People's Democratic Republic of Yelda" in the WFE. Many of them have their own unique flag and proper WFE entry.

But hey, if you don't like it, why don't you come and take them away?

As for respect, that is something that must be earned. As a group, 10000 Islands and TITO have certainly earned that respect. As an individual, AD, you have not. You have demonstrated a tendency to gripe and whine and moan about an incident that the other members of your region either don't even know about, or don't care about. You need to move on to other things, because I can assure you that the rest of us have.

The last time someone complained to the mods (which wasn't me, by the way) that we were upset with the joke region 10000 Islands, one of your guys posted on the RMB to the effect of saying something like "Deal with it". I'll say the same to you.

And judging by the posts I've read on NSF, I'm not the only one who feels upset about AO's actions and antics.

Do they? Explain. I've stated time and again (and you can go back and check this yourself) that my intent was not to harm 10KI but to ridicule the SC. I have no reason to want to harm 10KI. I have a multitude of reasons to want to harm the SC.

Is there anything inherently wrong with founding regions named after RL places if those regions are open for settlement?

And you still haven't answered my original question re:puppet regions. What does any of that have to do with AO?

The region was founded by Kenny, and most of their antics as a region are spearheaded by Kenny.. so yeah, I think it is safe to disagree with that mathematical expression. AO, however, is going to support one of their members.

That said, it doesn't mean we should forget what they did. And the point here is whether they deserve to have been commended. I don't think they do based on their actions.

I don't get it, still. What Yelda does on his own time, in his own regions, is his business. He's shown absolutely zero interest in mobilizing a raider army, and AO has done likewise. It is therefore silly to suggest that we're raiders-in-waiting. The second strike against that idea would be that I would hardly register an account on this forum to draw attention to myself if we were trying to fly under the radar. The third strike would be that most AOers are either indifferent to the invasion/defense aspect of the game or are about as repulsed by region crashers as most defenders.

Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the reasons that 10000 Islands hasn't invaded AO are as follows:

1. 10000 Islands isn't about to raid a non-invader region over some forum posts.

2. TITO certainly wouldn't welcome the headaches that would come from an unprovoked raid.

3. AO has an active founder.

5. 10000 Islands would probably prefer to maintain its reputation as friendly and welcoming (which it is) and contrast it to AO's as being filled with buttholes (which we usually aren't, but you need to get to know us before that becomes apparent).

So please don't threaten us, especially if you don't speak for your region as a whole. And again, I invite a more general discussion of this matter to be held elsewhere, if it is necessary. I feel the need to address your claims, but I do not want to spam or threadjack this discussion.

I am just saying, there are a range of options in NationStates. So far we have chosen to resist verbally in response to the '10000 Island' incident. What I post on my own region's forum is none of your business. Kenny and whoever that runs AO seems to think they can make fun of anyone and anything under the sun. Some people may roll over and laugh it off. I'm prepared to resist.

Seeing as how I just head-butted the guy four times on the forums to receive a flame-bait charge, I don't think we really disagree on this issue as a whole. I just don't like to see people being accused of something that they didn't do -- Yelda was doing something that he saw as harmless fun and you don't need binoculars to see that.
