College Football 2010 Picks and Standings
Post by atlantaislands on Jul 23, 2010, 12:43pm

Hello everyone! I am starting to get my bearings as Sports Updater, and this is something I am shocked to hear you've never done- points for college football games.

I have to set this up differently there is different numbers of teams, and conferences, and such that make it different from the NFL and other major sports leagues.

There will be 4 parts to how you earn points.

I- Champion Picks
A. National Champions- If you pick the National Champion team, you win 25 points at the end of season!! (25 possible points in this part)

B. Conference Champions- If you pick the right conference champion from their conference, you get 10 points. Also, whoever has the best record of the Independent teams (Navy/Army/Notre Dame- in case of tie with any of the teams, we will use the games against their other independent members as tiebreaker. If that still fails, then anyone who picked either team will recieve points) (11 Conferences, with the independents makes 12, for a total of 120 possible points).

C. Divisonal Champions- If you pick any team who won their divison (NOTE: Only 5 conferences have divisions- ACC, Big 12, C-USA, MAC, and SEC), you get 5 points (10 Divisons make a possible 50 points in this section.

II- Games

Each game is worth a total of 1 point and 20 games shall be picked each week to ask around. There are 15 weeks, but last week is only Army/Navy so that week will be considered week 14. 14 weeks times 20 games is 280 points possible.

III- Bonuses

Bonus questions are random. They could be about anythng to do with college football. And not just the current games; almost anything to do with college football could be picked so I can't really give you any other info besides that a correct bonus answer is 5 points extra. (1 Bonus a week- 14 weeks, pre-season and post-season, as well as the whole bowl season, which shall count as a "week" for bonuses- 18 Bonus times 5 point each, 90 possible points)

IV- Bowl Games

Bowl Picks come at the end of season where we say who we think wins.

You just simply put your bowl picks down, and I shall give points according to the way I would games. BCS Bowl Games (Rose/Sugar/Fiesta/Orange/BCS Nat'l Championship) are worth 4-8 points , all other bowls are worth 2 to 6 points, pending the games system. (220 maximum points in this section)

TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS: 785 total points.

Vashna's pick on Sun Belt is impossible, as the University of Denver is in the Sun Belt, but has no football team XD.

LOL. I spoke to him and we both had a good laugh about that ^.^ ("I don't know why I picked that. Do you have any idea how small the U of Denver is?"). He says to keep everything the same, except change UoD to Kansas State. Hope that works! >.>

#1- Alabama

The last SEC team to make the Top-25 was Auburn, which I voted for, so I get 5 points for Pre-Season Picks!! Good job on the other picks Vashna and Biblical, SCAR got 38 votes to be Top-25 and LSU was just a little to high up

Bonus Question: Mark Ingram is missing #1 Alabama's Season Opener vs. San Jose State. Will Trent Richardson be able to rush for more yards than Mark Ingram did in last years season opener (It was one 150 yards BTW)?

You can modify your pre-season champion picks up until October 1st, which is the end of the main non-conference season.

Week #1 picks are closed, and I've only recieved 3 out of 5 of the participants picks. Takaram and Biblical I guess are sitting out, unless they post earlier tomorrow. .... I know the BONUS was late, but you may give bonus guesses up until this saturday at noon.

ANSWER: YES
Re: College Football 2010 Picks and Standings
Post by atlantaislands on Sept 11, 2010, 10:17pm

I also want to say that at first I thought Vashna started like 10/10 on the first few picks, and I thought "What if Vashna gets 100%?"

I decided that if anyone gets 1.000 on ANY week, I will award 5 Bonus point because not even ESPN experts are that accurate and that deserves an award.

BTW- Week 15 (AKA only Army-Navy) DOES NOT COUNT as a week. The Army-Navy game, for games number purposes, is considered a Week 14 Game/

Sorry for late posting, I have been a little busy.

Week 6 was upset-filled, with Florida State upsetting Miami in Miami, Michigan State going to the Big House and upsetting undefeated Michigan, Illinois upsetting Penn State on Homecoming @ Happy Valley, the Bayou Bengals going to the Swamp and upsetting the Gators.

And thats not the end of it, even though I wish it was. Steve Spurrier and South Carolina upset #1 Alabama, and took Alabama's Control of its ability to get to Glendale straight out of their hands.

Anyway, to Week #7:

(PICKS DUE WEDNESDAY)

****Sunflower Showdown/Battle for the Govenor's Cup- Kansas State (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) @ Kansas (2-3, 0-1 Big 12)

To start, I am sorry so many of these games are easy picks but I picked what was pickabe. But also, this isn't the worst week. The final week has only 15 games, including Army-Navy (which will be put in as a week 14 game). However, with the 5 Conference Championships, we have excactly 20 games that week.

WEEK #6 GAMES:

Thursday Night-

Kansas State beat Kansas, 59-7! Congrats to myself, Fantasy and Vashna. (I think thats the biggest margin of victory for any game I posted as a pick)

Navy beat SMU, 28-21! Congrats to myself!

#21 Missouri beat Texas A&M, 30-9! Congrats to no one :(

#7 Auburn beat #12 Arkansas, 65-43! Congrats to myself, Vashna and Fantasy! (Record Points for Most Points Scored in a SEC Conference Game that ended in Regulation. As well as I think this is the highest-scoring game that I've posted as a Week pick)

#17 Arizona beat Washington State, 24-7! Congrats to myself!

BONUS: Ingram only got 45 yards, so the correct answer was no! Congrats to no one :(

Funny, I said this Week would be a lot of straight-forward, favorite winning games. Upsets: #23 AFA beat by SDSU, #1 OSU beat by WISC, UK beat #10 SCAR, and UT beat NEB.

****Also, Vashna and Fantasy have been put under special implications in terms of how they'll gain points this week, as they missed a lot of picks due to the fact I did my picks post at 2 separate times.

Welcome to November NCAA football! We have 5 (After this week only 4) undefeated teams, and several outsiders (Alabama, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, as well as a long-shot few others) with chances for a national title.

3 weeks are left until Rivialry Week, which could have games with the greatest impact on the National Title Race (Alabama vs. Auburn, Nevada vs. Boise State, Arizona vs. Oregon, etc.) and also BCS Bowl Implications (Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State, Oregon State vs. Stanford, Michigan @ Ohio State, etc.). We are greeted by what I would call a week that truely test you're football predicting abilities.

This week has these game making our pick list, and here's the ratios:

25%- T25 vs. T25 (5 Games)

25%- T25 vs. Teams w/ 5+ Wins (5 Games)

35%- NR vs. NR- Record Difference of 1 or 0 Win Difference (7 Games)

15%- None of the Above (3 Games)

This ain't going to be easy, but here we go!

Records based on BCS Standings.

Ok guys... since I have looked and found 3 teams who have clinched either a Divisional or Conference Championship, I want to go back to the very beginning and look over everyones picks and see who has won what.

Who has the chance to win a division title is listed, and the teams are listed in order of who is 1st, 2nd, 3rd...

People with a shot/have correctly picked a champion are listed in parentheses.

*Note: In the Indep. race, if a tie occurs, a head to head will break it up, as all 3 played the other 2 independent teams)

ACC______________ (Champion- Virginia Tech is ACC Champions... +5 ATL, VAS, TAK)

Atlantic Division Race: Florida State is Atlantic division champions. (+5 ATL, TAK)

Coastal Division Race: Virginia Tech has won the ACC Coastal (+5 ATL, FAN, VAS, TAK).

Big 12_________________ (Champion- Oklahoma is Big 12 Champions... +5 BIB)

North Division Race: Nebraska is North Division Champions. (+5 ATL, TAK, BIB)

South Division Race: Oklahoma is South Division Champions. (+5 ATL, BIB, TAK)

Big East__________________
Title Race: Connecticut is Big East Champions. (+5 No one :( )

Big Ten___________________
Title Race: Wisconsin is Big Ten Champions (+10 BIB)

C-USA__________________(UCF is C-USA Champions- +5 No one :( )

East Division Race: UCF is East Division Champions. (+5 FAN)

West Divison Race: SMU is West Division Champions. (+5 BIB)

Independent Leader________________
Leader Race: Navy will be the Independent with the best record at the end of the regular season. (+10 ATL, TAK, BIB)

Mid-American_____________ ( Miami (OH) is MAC Champions- +5 No one :( )

East Division Race: Miami (OH) is MAC East Champions. (+5 VAS)

West Division Race: Northern Illinois is MAC West Division Champions (+5 FAN)

Mountain West__________________
Title Race: TCU is Mtn. West Champions (+10 Points- Atlanta)

Pac-10____________________
Title Race: Oregon is Pac-10 Champions. (+10 BIB)

SEC___________________ (Auburn is SEC Champions- +10 No One :( )

East Division Race: South Carolina is SEC East Champions. (+5 No One :( )

West Division Race: Auburn is SEC West Champions. (+5 No One :( )

Sun Belt___________________________
Title Race: Florida International is Sun Belt Champions. (+5 No One :( )

WAC______________________________
Title Race: Nevada is WAC Champions (+10 FAN)

***The Big Ten champion is projected to be Wisconsin, because they will likley be ranked the highest of the 3 teams in the final BCS Standings.

***Nevada should be WAC Champions, as when it goes to each teams record, Nevada has 1-more win than Boise, and 3/4 more wins than Hawaii.

Welcome to Week #12! We have only 3 weeks left, including this, before the bowl season. Week #13 is next week, and Week "#14" (The 14 games in Week #14, the 5 Conference Titles, and the only Week #15 game, Army-Navy, combined for 20 games), and the bowl season.

Anyway, on to the games and such.

Instead of going on bonus about some stats or margin of victory, we will use a GAME this week as the bonus. Why would I do that? It's a game going on Tuesday night, I wanted to use it since it has a conference title implications, and both teams are some of the best in the MAC.

However, it's to early to count as an actual game, and if anyone doesn't get it in in time, it's kind of unfair if it counted against them. To resolve this issue, it'll be a bonus worth 5 points.

The rankings are based on the Week #12 (11/14) AP Poll.

I would like to request that Vashna be put in for the bonus as a coin toss (Heads: Home team, Tails: Away team). He's not on very often, and I doubt he would have had time to respond to Monday's bonus since he wouldn't be looking for it then. As for me, whoops I'm out of luck xP

Re: College Football 2010 Picks and Standings
Post by atlantaislands on Nov 21, 2010, 1:36pm

Welcome to week 13! We've probably got the most exciting week ahead! We've got RIVALRY WEEK!!!!
We've got games affecting the BCS race (AUB-ALA), games affecting conference races (OU-OSU), ones with BCS berths on the line (AZ-OR), games with bowl berths on the line (TAMU-UT & GT-UGA), ones that have lost their former glamour but still a lot of heat between the teams (MICH-OSU & ND-USC), and some to just keep proving that you're better than your rival (UK-TENN).
This week, the stakes are high also for the game- for us who pick, this could be the make it or break it week; yet I want to up it more!
I hit the up the stakes button about 20 times to many- this week we have 40 games! And this means we have lots of options. And after hitting 20 times to many, I hit it 2 more times- to double the points for correct points (1 to 2). To also allow flexabilty, you can also choose to not play "Double Trouble" (what will call doubling the points). Plus, we have 2 bonuses, and each has been doubled. People can gain up to A HUNDRED POINTS this round.

Now, heres where it gets intresting-you only are required to pick 20 games and get 100% to get a 10 bonus (Doubled again, for rivalry week). So, option one is to play basic- the 20 games I post first, with one bonus, for the equivalent of points for just another week- 30. Then, you can play "Basic Double Trouble" to gain 60 points- if you wish. Then you can start picking game from our extra category- you can choose to take no extras, or all, or some, or mix and match and take out games you simply don't feel up-to-par with picking. And of course, you can play "Quadruple Trouble"- 40 games, 2 bonuses.

Just list the categories on top like so:

Game Type: Basic, Double Basic, Mix'N'Match, Quadruple Trouble.
x2 Score: Yes, No
2 Bonuses: Yes, No
Bonus Doubled: Yes, No

An Example of this would be:

Game Type: Mix'N'Match
x2 Score: Yes
2 Bonuses: No
Bonus Doubled: Yes

Anyway, onto the games!

Quote:
Conference Champions- If you pick the right conference champion from their conference, you get 10 points. Also, whoever has the best record of the Independent teams (Navy/Army/Notre Dame- in case of tie with any of the teams, we will use the games against their other independent members as tiebreaker. If that still fails, then anyone who picked either team will recieve points) (11 Conferences, with the independents makes 12, for a total of 120 possible points).

With that in mind, let's begin.

The ACC:
The Champion: Virginia Tech won. Congrats to Atlanta Islands, Takaram, and Vashna.

The Big 12:
Champion: Oklahoma Won. Congrats to Biblical Importance

According to what I found Fantasy post a while back, this is the standings (though it would have been easier if I had found it earlier...I was doing it manually >.<)

1st: Atlanta Islands (287)
2nd: Fantasy League Commissioner (249)
3rd: Vashna (187)
4th: Biblical Importance (155)
5th: Takaram (57)

I don't know what exactly he was using for the scoring system, so! For the last round, I am going to use the maximum number of points as spelled out by him for the bowls. Good luck to everyone.

If Atlanta Islands comes back, he can get full control of this game back. He's been away for more than a week, so I just wanted to get a jump start on this one, just in case he doesn't come back/CTEs. I haven't gotten anything from him telling me when he gets back. As such, I will run this until he returns :)

Ok... since I am finally back. Here's the system.

ESPN Bowl Mania!

You not only pick the winners, but you pick confidence and rank the bowls in order on confidence. I also do have some things to update but you can choose to play straight of confidence.

Each correct game is worth 1 point, 30 possible points. Except, the 5 BCS Bowls are worth 2 Points a Piece, for another 10 points. So playing it straight you can earn up to ten points.

On top of that, for every 1 point. If you play confidence, you can get another 35 points for a correct pick. So you can come close to already gaining more points on 1 confidence game than getting ALL of the Straight game picks right.

I will post more in a sec, but as of now I have a lot of math to do and post modifing to catch up on :)

So, I will announce more in a few days.
Re: College Football 2010 Picks and Standings
Post by atlantaislands on Dec 14, 2010, 4:35pm

Ok so let me explain ESPN's Bowl Mania:

Bowl Mania is a system where you not only pick the winners but you pick you're confidence level.

I haven't come up with a points value yet as there is ways that you can rack up points picking the 5 most confident correctly and win which is totally unfair. So I must decide at a different time.

You're going to use this format:

Confidence Ranking- Bowl Winner

Also, they're ranked 1-35- 35 being most confident, 1 being least.

Example:

1- Washington
2- East Carolina
3- Air Force.....
34- Nebraska
35- Oklahoma

Please PM me if ya have any questions on this.
Re: College Football 2010 Picks and Standings
Post by atlantaislands on Dec 17, 2010, 11:10pm

Ok so this is how I plan on running it:

First this is the only part of the season you CAN lose points. So that makes confidence picks really important to this.

5 Categories:

1-7: Little Confidence- +/-1 Point (Correct/Incorrect)
8-14: Some Confidence- +/- 2 Points (Correct/Incorrect)
15-21: Solid Confidence- +/- 3 Points (Correct/Incorrect)
22-28: Definite Confidence- +/- 4 Points (Correct/Incorrect)
29-35: Total Confidence- +/- 5 Points (Correct/Incorrect)

I decided to minus points if you missed some to prevent someone from like only winner 21-35 and they win it all because of it. This kind of keeps it even so you have to not only pick confidence correctly (Cause one of the ESPN Guys won because of it last year), but also have to have good win percent.

The season will end on Janurary 10th and we shall just have to sit and watch what happens in the offseason.

Since Fantasy posted the games, here is the final bonus:

National Championship Score (Closest Person will get bonus- That is determined by: Who is closest on Winner Scoring, loser scoring, and point difference)?
