Gatlam Province, United Provinces of Fusang (south of Kannex)
On July 18th, 2016, all seemed to be peaceful. The Fusangese garrison at the small city of Bukdayeng were resting and lazily reading newspapers or gambling. They were all getting used to the internal turmoil in their country, and they were convinced known of it would reach Bukdayeng, a border town in the middle of the grasslands.
Since 1994, warlords had ruled separate parts of Fusang and the country was in civil war in all but name. Warlords had their own private armies and mercenaries and used them to attack their enemies. The central government itself comprised of former or current warlords and oligarchs. Somehow, for the last two decades, the central government had managed to keep the warlords from making all-out chaos with their private armies.
That all changed about a year ago. Faced with corruption and the fragmentation of the central government, the people went to the streets and protested, blocking traffic and paralyzing the economy of the nation. They were led by the Fusang Communist Party, or the Gungchaandong. Foreigners and the rich alike screamed in fear and frustration as these students, workers, and peasants disrupted "the natural order of society".
The central government responded to the leftist protests with their usual response. Martial law was declared, protesters were arrested, and their leaders arrested. The movement was driven underground and was forced to hide in the mountains, where they were slowly healing and recovering while fending off government attacks with guerrilla warfare. Just three days ago, however, the communist guerrillas managed to destroy an entire government division with nothing but a few thousand peasants armed with AK-47s.
The soldiers at Bukdayeng could only sigh and shake their heads when they heard the news. What was to become of Fusang?
At 10:22 PM, however, an explosion rocked the soldiers off their chairs. It came from a section of the Kannex--Fusang Railway half a mile away. Immediately the Fusang soldiers rushed to the scene, where they found the railway to be nearly completely demolished by the explosion...
"Is this a terrorist attack?" one of the soldiers asked his comrade, scratching his head.
