Malecia was once a thriving nation with a strong Democratic tradition and a population of 500 million. It was a land of cattle ranches and low taxes. It was a leader in technological innovation and some of the most advanced devices used in medicine and communications were developed here. That all came to an end some 30 years ago. The politics of Malecia were always turbulent, but it was accepted as a natural part of our culture and our tradition of free thought and expression.
The Malecia Union Party came to power in a time of economic struggle. The Union Party soon began to curb freedoms and make shady deals supplying weapons to anyone who could afford to buy them. While this artificially propped up the economy, it began to have an adverse consequence for Malecia on the world stage. When the party's support began to erode, new restrictions were put in place on the press. The Malecia Freedom party formed an election strategy and nominated candidates for provincial and national offices.
When the Freedom Party won the first elections held in Malecia during the Union party's reign, the Union party tried to have the results voided in court. When that failed, the Union party abolished the provincial legislatures and expelled non members from the national assembly. The freedom party morphed into the armed Freedom Alliance of Malecia. The alliance had many disadvantages, but one simple key tactical advantage: the majority (nearly 75%) of the Malecian military supported the Freedom Alliance. Nevertheless, the struggle lasted nearly 5 years and the war resulted in over 4 million dead. Many more millions fled the country. By the time Freedom forces took the capital and vanquished the last of the Union party's forces, there were less than 6 million Malecians left.
All these years later, the Civil War is a distant memory that fades a little more each day. Technology and trade are the underpinnings of a current economic expansion that should last for the foreseeable future.
