How very strange. We have just talked about this in my Social Studies methods education course. I am of the thought that the purpose of education is to make children into intelligent, well rounded, and responsible adults. I am also of the mind that we should strive to make children good, civic minded citizens, but that is subject to what country your in I suppose. That being said, so much technology is already being introduced so young. I was in a class of 5th graders using ipads the other day. I think that in order to prepare young children for the world they will enter as adults, we much start teaching them with technology at a young age. I feel this is a reflection of the changing times. It would be important not to forgo other essential skills that need taught at young ages, and to keep in ind that with new teaching methods come new risks. For example, the Internet is a great resource for information, but also a source of potentially damaging imagery. A teacher must be able to maximize the the good output of new technology and minimize the negative.

I have something to say.
I think what Val is extremely relevant, I picked this debate because I heard them talking about it on the radio and they were arguing both sides.
I was taught to type when I was a sophomore in high school, now my 8 year old son knows how to type and using all his fingers not 'hunting and pecking' as it were.
My sister in law has a 1 year old who not only uses her iPad on a regular basis it has learning games specific for him, he touches the letter and it talks to him and says the letter putting a sound with the letter, it blows my mind!
The physical book is becoming obsolete.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Minna....but I have to say I agree with the FOR side. I could argue the against just for the sake of arguing....but I don't have it in me right now.

Kids will inevitably be using the internet as part of their learning process. I understand that it can be beneficial in many ways, but kids are bound to get interested in other things which can be potentially harmful to them and their development. Also, I believe kids should be introduced to the natural world around them first, to get them used to it. That way, they have less of a chance of becoming addicted to electronic games and the like. Only after that do we bring out the technology.
I think the fact that kids will have electronics at younger and younger ages is inevitable, but seeing 7 year old children with iphones makes me wonder to what extent we should expose kids, as this also spoils the kids in a way. They are growing up with the internet and instant communication, with they will take for granted, and which de-personalizes conversations and makes them less intimate. I think that while introducing technology is important, we should still limit certain factors to it.

I have to say I agree with Messaline on his point. Little kids don't need iphones. Its gonna be a crutch for them. I know I use technolgy as a crutch at times, and it can have negative effects. For example, from texting and using spell check, and the auto spell checker on my windows word processor, my spelling has gone down the tubes. There are words I know I used to know how to spell and now I can't, and it stinks when I do written assignments because my spelling sucks.
