[glow=red,2,300]This is the story of how our great, free land came to be[/glow]
Founding
The forefathers of our people lived in a far away land called "The Kingdom of Dingleberry". One day, a group of brave young men sparked off a revolution. A peaceful revlution that was, which didn't do much, because those men were just a bunch of hippies. Their cult (if you want to call it that), however, was not long unknown, and it was not long before more people began to revolt against the oppressive King Dingle by getting high in their homes.
Soon this behaviour started showing effect. All that blazing resulted in serious cases of the munchies, and when the Kingdom was struck by a drought, the King has had enough. He ordered his henchmen to bring him the leaders of the "Free People", which was what they called themselves.
"We are experiencing a devastating drought in our Kingdom, and you with your munchies are eating all the food that our hard working dwellers need!", the king stated.
"But Your Highness (which is how they referred to their king), we mean no harm!", the hippies answered.
"But your highness (which is a term the king used instead of "being stoned") brings great harm and starves poor children!", the kind established and while waving his scepter to his henchmen he said, "Be gone now! So that you may never munch on our food again!"
And so it happened that the hippies were exiled to a far away island.
On this island, they soon noticed how hard of a job it is to grow your own crops and take care of your own cattle. And only after a few generations of having to work hard themselves, the hippies were hippies no more, but honest, diligent people.
It took several more generations until our nation became what it is now, but finally we live in a flourished land, a free land.
History of our flag
The flag of the Free Land of Kingdom Dingleberry is very similar to the flag of the Kingdom of Dingleberry, the land our forefathers came from. When the forefathers were exiled to our island hundreds of years ago, they took a flag from the Kingdom, because they were high and thought it was really pretty.
The flag didn't change for many generations, until the people of our country left the hippie lifestyle behind and began to form an actual nation. They took the flag they had and added three smaller stars next to the existing big star (which originally represented the king). The founders of our nation did not want another Kingdom, and so the big star now stood for the elected leader, and the smaller ones for the parliament.
The letters "D" and "B" in the upper right corner stood, and still stand, for the Kingdom of Dingleberry. They were left on the flag, because for our founders, the old Kingdom was an example of a well functioning, successful land, just like they wanted their new home to be. Just without the king.
The Kingdom of Dingleberry no longer exists, but it proudly lives on in our hearts and flag.
Geography and Environment
Almost the entire coastline is made of high cliffs. Only a relatively small part of about 20 mile length of the coast is flat, which is where the capital city, Dingleton, is located. The island is generally flat and its uninhabited parts are mostly covered in woodland. An inactive volcano, Mount Uklang, in the north-eastern part of the island is also the only mountain with a height of 10,000ft above sea level. Mount Uklang volcanic crater is the biggest lake of the island, Lake Uklang. The areas around the volcano are the only parts that are not woodland, but steppe and apart from two different species of antelopes uninhabited. The transitional are from steppe to woodland is dominated by the islands national animal, the firewolf. The most common wild animal on the island is the dwarf boar, which is about half the size of normal boars. The islands biggest river, the Myrte River, swells in the steppe region close to Mount Uklang, and streams across country to become the famous Myrte Waterfall in the most southern spot of the island.
Living Situation
The biggest city of the Free Land of Kingdom Dingleberry is its capital, Dingleton, on the west side of the island. The majority of other cities are located along the Myrte River, which is used as the main way of transportation for goods between the cities. Several small villages are scattered across the island. The villagers mainly live off of their own farming.
Military History
The only war in the history of the country took place only 70 years after the first people arrived from the Kingdom of Dingleberry. The war was between our founding fathers and the island's native inhabitants, the people of Nahori. The war had no real winner, and after a year of fighting, both sides agreed to share the island peacefully. Today, most of the Nahori's descendants work in the country's cities, only few still live isolated in the woodland-steppe borderlands and follow their tribal lifestyle.
Only recently the government passed a law by which every male, when he reaches 18 years of age, has to serve one year in the military force, which resulted in a significant, but not exorbitant growth of the force's size.
The Free Land of Kingdom Dingleberry has no real navy, only a few armed coast guard boats protect the shores from sea. The country has a relatively small airforce, and compared by the population size, a decent sized army.
Political Situation
The Free Land of Kingdom Dingleberry is officially a democracy, has, however, only one party electable for presidency, the Democratic Dingleberry Party (DDP). Every city with a population over 20,000 has its own "party", which provides the mayor for the city. 35% of the seats in the parliament belong to the DDP, the rest belongs to the delegates of the cities and the mayors. The number of delegates depends on the size of the city they're from. Every member of the parliament's vote counts the same, no matter if president, DDP member, or delegate/mayor. The president, however, has a veto right.
Mayors are elected every two years, the president every four years. The DDP has to provide between three and five candidates for this election, and a president can always be re-elected.
