On second thought, and after closer inspection: Translation machine? That's crazy talk. Please enjoy a hand-crafted English translation of our regional welcome telegram. The content is not fascinating in its novelty, if you are not new to playing NationStates any more. It does however show, exempli gratia, a casual approach to playing a webgame, and a focus on the essential voluntariness in picking one's leisure activities.
Illustrated with paintings again. This time around, we will visit the Hiddensoer Künstlerinnenbund, an association of women painters who gathered for mutual creative support on the island Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea between 1919 and 1933. Their work could be admired in the island town Vitte inside a blue-painted barn.

Regional welcome telegram Deutschland
A cordial welcome to the beautiful region Deutschland!
Here, you can develop your nation or nations as you like. There are no obligations here. To get an initial orientation, you should read the FAQ. www.nationstates.net/page=faq There are, of course, plenty of possibilities, but I have hidden these in the spoiler, in case you wish to read on. Make yourself comfortable in Deutschland!
Henni Lehmann: Bäuerin auf der Straße in Kloster, Hiddensee Countrywoman on the street in Kloster, Hiddensee
How can I describe my nation in detail? You can publish the results of your imaginativeness in Factbooks and Dispatches, and edit these any time. If you post a link to your Factbook on our Regional Message Board – acronym RMB – a few more readers will find them. www.nationstates.net/page=create_dispatch
Henni Lehmann: Mädchen auf Hiddensee Girl on Hiddensee
What's the purpose of the Regional Message Board in Deutschland? You are welcome to say hello here and talk with the other players in the region Deutschland whenever you like. We are one of the regions that use the tag Non-English, as our Regional Message Board welcomes contributions in German and in English. Nations in regions which we have built embassies with can participate as well. www.nationstates.net/page=display_region_rmb/region=deutschland
Clara Arnheim: Fischer im alten Hafen von Vitte Fishermen in the old port of Vitte
How old is the region Deutschland? The region Deutschland is documented since 2003, the year in which NationStates was started. Our first founder nation was Schwerin, 2003-2009. Our current founder nation is Yermaney, nation founded in 2008, founder of Deutschland since 4 March 2013. On a website maintained by the region Texas you can track this. Type Deutschland into the region search field and click Search. The earliest record here is 28 May 2003. nsdossier.texasregion.net/history.aspx

Where can I find out more about issues? Issues are characterised by satirically exaggerated options and result texts. They change a nation's stats. You can try out different results with different nations. If you ever wish to read around some more about this short text genre, that's what the Got Issues? forum is for. forum.nationstates.net/viewforum.php?f=13
Elisabeth Büchsel: Segeler vor Hiddensee Sailboat near Hiddensee
Where can I participate in interactive roleplays in English language? On the NationStates website's forums, there's cooperative creative writing in National and International Roleplaying, and not nation-based in Portal to the Multiverse. Look at each forum's sticky threads first, to find your way, before you start writing. Read around a bit, to look whether anything corresponds to your interests. If this shouldn't be the case – websites for supporting each other's creativity, be it writing stories or in consensually interactive roleplay writing, exist in plenty of forms. forum.nationstates.net/viewforum.php?f=3 forum.nationstates.net/viewforum.php?f=31
Elisabeth Büchsel: Drei Fischer Three fishermen
What about roleplaying in German language? Interactive creative writing in non-English languages doesn't exist on this site, as far as I know. However, for this purpose, you can look around on various established German-speaking roleplay writing and worldbuilding websites, completely independently from NationStates.

Is there any chat in German language on this website, beyond our Deutschland RMB? Yes, a search in the subforum General Discussion yields a few results. Search for keywords: Deutsch. Search in Forums: General Discussion. Search within: Topic titles only. Display results as: Topics. forum.nationstates.net/search.php?

What is the World Assembly about? The World Assembly serves for voting for or against supranational resolutions. General Assembly resolutions alter stats within WA-member nations. Security Council resolutions are merely nominal (commendation, condemnation) or they have an effect on regions (liberation). It's possible to discuss drafts; however it is advisable to first do a considerable amount of reading in the respective forums, before making an informed decision whether one wishes to participate in them.
Käthe Loewenthal: Strand bei Vitte Beach near Vitte
How does joining the WA work? First, type and save an email address in your Settings; it doesn't need to be your personal email, any pseudonymous email will do. Below, click on Update. www.nationstates.net/page=settings Then go to the World-Assembly page, and click on the grey button Apply to Join. www.nationstates.net/page=un Look in your email account, possibly also in your spam folder, and in the world assembly email, click on the confirmation link.

How can I transfer my WA membership from one nation to another nation of mine? You can invent as many nations as you wish. Also within the region Deutschland, you can play more than one nation. In the game rules, one nation within the WA is permitted per player, and this is checked automatically. This means, if you have a WA member nation, but now wish to join the WA with another nation, your nation that has been a WA member hitherto needs to resign from the WA first. You bring this about by clicking the Resign button on the WA page. www.nationstates.net/page=un If you change your WA membership from one nation to another, be sure to use the same email address in both nations, so that you can't mess up.
Käthe Loewenthal: Boddenufer bei Neuendorf, Hiddensee Marshes close to Neuendorf, Hiddensee
How does an endorsement work? When your nation has joined the WA, it can give an endorsement to other nations within the same region. For this, you click on the other nation, and at the bottom of its page, you click the button Endorse [nation name]. Endorsements cause the nation that has most of them within a region to become its delegate. Delegates can not only give their own vote in the WA, in addition, they receive one additional vote per received endorsement. If you join the WA with a nation in Deutschland, we request you to endorse the delegate nation Yermaney, by going to the nation page Yermaney and at the bottom, clicking on the button Endorse Yermaney. Endorse other WA-members in the region as you please.
Käthe Loewenthal: Boote im Hafen von Vitte Boats in Vitte harbour
And if I'm not interested in the WA? If you have no desire to let your nation be changed by resolutions, and prefer to ignore the WA, you can use it anyway, to do something for a region in a broader sense. Your non-WA nation will remain unaffected. It's possible to join with an otherwise unimportant puppet nation, merely for the purpose of providing the delegate nation with an endorsement and thus an additional vote. Even if it should be the case that you couldn't care less about the WA in all other respects, with such an endorsement you can symbolically express a thank you to the delegate Yermaney, who as founder is reliably sustaining the region Deutschland for years.

Does Deutschland have a formal virtual goverment with a cabinet and that sort of thing? No, we're too lazy for that. We're not launching a bunch of extra activities here which require such volunteers. Anyone will be familiar with the organisation of real elections, if they're active in a registered association or two in their free time. If however you feel like trying out something like this in a virtual environment such as NationStates, have a look around in regions using the optional tag regional government, for example among the regions which we maintain embassies with. You can try this out elsewhere simultaneously with a relaxed residency in Deutschland, if you have the time and inclination. However, take a long and detailed look at the potential region in question in advance, so that you don't get roped into anything sordid. If you wish, you can also ask for advice.
Katharina Bamberg: Steilküste auf Hiddensee Cliffline on Hiddensee
How can I switch off telegrams that request me to join a different region? Under Telegrams, click on Preferences. Next to Recruitment, check Block All. Then click on Update Filter. www.nationstates.net/page=tgsettings
Elisabeth Büttner: Hexenhaus Witch's cottage (This was used as an endearing nickname for one of the cottages on Hiddensee.)
How can I switch off telegrams that are sent to the entire region Deutschland? Under Telegrams, click on Preferences. Next to Region (official), check Block All. Then click on Update Filter. Usually, however, we will leave you in peace in Deutschland, and send anything resembling this telegram only extremely rarely. www.nationstates.net/page=tgsettings
Elisabeth Büttner: Winter Winter
How do you call the figure of speech of posing a question, only to answer it oneself? Hypophora.
Elisabeth Andrae: Boote am Strand Boats on the beach
If any further questions remain open, you can ask them on the RMB or by telegram any time. It's good to have you around in Deutschland. Have fun with your state.
Elisabeth Andrae: Strand auf Hiddensee Beach on Hiddensee

The blue barn in Vitte on the island Hiddensee in the Baltic Sea.
About the artists
Henriette "Henni" Lehmann, born 1862 in Berlin. Founding member of the Künstlerinnenbund. Painter, writer, social and health activist. Around 1920, she bought a house on Hiddensee which had previously housed a bakery and its barn. From its new blue facade, it became known as the blue barn. This house was the main exhibition space for the group's work. The time was still one of marked prejudices against women doing artistic work; angry tirades in newspapers and nasty remarks about 'Malweiber' (a pejorative term used at the time meaning 'paint-females', today sometimes reclaimed and reinterpreted in a positive sense) were tools in attempts to discourage women from daring to venture outside alone with brush and easel pursuing their own interests. The Hiddensee artist community offered mutual professional inspiration and moral support. The artists also built friendships on the island, and supported the local community financially, enabling for example a health centre to be built. The Künstlerinnenbund lasted until 1933. Some of the association's painters were Jewish, and the national socialist government disbanded it and prohibited all its activities. As a result of her and others' persecution by the national socialist government, Henni Lehmann despaired and took her own life in 1937.
Clara Arnheim, born 1865 in Berlin. Professional painter, founding member of the Künstlerlinnenbund and initiator of various art exhibitions. One of the most prominent members of the island's artist community. The national socialist government deported her to Theresienstadt at the age of 77 years in 1942 and murdered her there.
Elisabeth Büchsel, born 1867 in Stralsund. Studied painting in Berlin, Paris and Munich. From 1904 onwards, she spent spring til autumn on Hiddensee to paint. Died 1957 in Stralsund, where some of her paintings are shown in the city's art museum.
Käthe Loewenthal, born 1878 in Berlin. Artistic education in Berlin and Zeven, worked in Munich, then Stuttgart and various other locations in Baden-Württemberg. Frequent summer stays on Hiddensee with focus on landscape painting. She was excluded from all professional associations and forbidden to work in 1934. The national socialist government deported her to Izbica in Poland and murdered her there in 1942.
Katharina Bamberg, born 1873 in Stralsund. Portrait, still life, and landscape in Germany, Denmark and France. Impressionist leaning. Painted on Hiddensee. After 1945, dedicated restorator of paintings damaged in the world war. The museum Stralsund shows various of her paintings; she died there in 1966.
Elisabeth Büttner, born 1853 in Hamburg. Studied in Munich and Paris. Painter and teacher, travelled to Hungary, Brasil and Russia. Maintained a studio and small private painting school in Hamburg. Had a little house on Hiddensee. She sold it again due to poverty and illness, and died in Hamburg in 1934.
Elisabeth Andrae, born 1876 in Leipzig. Studied painting in Dresden and Karlsruhe. Exhibited in Dresden, Berlin and on Hiddensee. The Near East Asian Museum (Vorderasiatisches Museum) Berlin integrated her wall paintings of archaeological excavation sites. Died in Dresden in 1945.
There were more artists on Hiddensee in this time period than the ones presented here. To explore further: Links about the Hiddensoer Künstlerinnenbund.

Good morning, here's a pleasant surprise. 2 hours ago: Deutschland became the Featured Region of the day.
A long-lived region is featured today. Deutschland. German speaking, open to humankind, informal, without coercion, casual. Founded in 2003, refounded in 2013 by the friendly support of TITO from 10000 Islands. We welcome visitors and well-wishes on the RMB, embassy posting is enabled.
