While my studies didn't end up going anywhere, one thing I did learn and what I am reminded of here is the concept of "scope creep" - that is to say, the temptation to make things far more complex than they need to be with the belief that by doing so automatically makes it better.
So while I personally enjoyed the more complex rule set (and from the looks of it was also the only one who actually took some time out to read and understand it ) I could tell straight away that there was going to be some confusion and sure enough I was right.
A good comparison to this round would be the 'hunger games' round that Gunny hosted. From what I can gather (on the surface at least) all he did in that round that was different than normal was introduce the concept of a penalty if no one was lynched in a day phase. When you think on that mechanically, for the players that's a very simple rule to understand yet it had such large impact on how the game was played - being simple though meant it didn't confuse people and consequently didn't diminish the fun.
So I guess the lesson here that the rest of us should probably be taking away from this is: if you want to change the rules a bit to try and make things more interesting go nuts but try to keep it simple and avoid scope creep. Occam's razor people - the simplest solution is often the best.
