Lauren pulled into the village, and soon located the police station. She parked outside, and took a deep breath. This is it, she thought. If she was going to get any help, this was it. She got out of the car and entered the station.
There was a policeman behind the reception desk, not paying attention to her until she reached him. “May I help you ma’am?” he asked.
Lauren took a deep breath. I won’t mention him unless I have to, she thought to herself before speaking. “My friend Kate’s been kidnapped,” she said to the policeman.
The policeman looked at her. “This wouldn’t happen to be the same Kate who lives in that house in the woods would it?” asked the policeman.
Lauren was stunned a moment, then nodded. “Yes. Do you know her?” she asked.
“Know her? She’s the Slender chick,” he said. “Yeah, she kept reporting these sightings of a thin faceless man in the forest. Of course, we couldn’t do anything about it. Nothing against the law about that. Least not legislative law. Medical law maybe.”
“So you don’t believe her about it either?” she asked, hiding her disappointment.
“Did I say I didn’t believe her?” said the policeman. “Yeah, at first I was sceptical, but then came the murders . . .”
“Murders?” asked Lauren.
“Yeah, couple weeks ago we found the bloodied clothes of some poor soul,” said the policeman. “First we just thought they was a drunk who wandered into the woods and got attacked by wolves. But then a couple of days later we found another one. And then another. The last one intrigued us the most.” He went onto his computer and brought up an image. “This is an image on their phone, taken about the time of death. What do you see?” Lauren examined the image closely, until she saw . . .
“Slenderman,” she gasped.
“’Fraid so ma’am,” said the policeman.
“We gotta do something,” said Lauren. “He took Kate, but I don’t think he’ll kill her. He seemed more content to try and lure me to the woods to get her.”
“Well you sure as hell ain’t going in there alone,” said the policeman. “I’m gonna get my partner, and then we’ll rouse some villagers. Time we stop this Slenderman for good.”
Half an hour later, Lauren and two policemen were standing in front of eleven villagers, armed with pitchforks and torches. “Alright folks,” said the second policeman. “We have no idea what this creature is capable of. Normal weapons may be ineffective. But if we attack en masse, we shall take him down, and rescue the poor girl in his clutches.”
This brought an enthusiastic cheer from the crowd as they set off into the woods. It seemed like a coincidence, but the deeper they got into the woods the darker it got. Soon, there was no light at all, save the light from the villager’s torches. And that’s when they heard it.
'So you brought backup Lauren', said the voice. 'Pity, I thought you’d be noble enough to come alone and not risk the lives of the innocent. Oh well, I guess it’ll just be more fun for me.'
“SLENDER,” yelled Lauren. “What have you done with Kate?”
'She’s alive', said Slenderman. 'In fact, she managed to escape me. At least she thinks she did. I’m a being of immense power. I control the forest. She can wander these woods for days and not find a way out. In fact, you all will.' Slenderman seemed to laugh at this.
“Wherever you are Slender, we will find you, and kill you,” said Lauren.
'Oh really?' asked Slenderman. 'Because I have three proxies that sustain me. With them around, I cannot die.'
The villagers looked at each other, concerned. “What do we do?” asked one of them.
“Simple,” said another. “We hunt down these proxy things, kill them, then kill Slenderman.”
“We’ll be here to keep y’all safe,” said one of the policemen. “If anything is effective against Slender and his proxies, it’ll be our guns. Hopefully.”
'Very well', said Slenderman. 'If you want to play, I’ll be happy to let you make the first move.' Suddenly, the forest became lighter, as if it were daytime. 'I am at my weakest during the day', said Slenderman. 'If you really think you can defeat me, come and get me.'
“Alright guys, split up and search the forest,” said one of the policeman, and the group started to leave.
“Hey, wait guys,” called Lauren, but they’d all already disappeared into the trees. Lauren sighed. “Maybe it would have been smarter to go in groups,” she said to herself. “I’ll have to find everyone myself and tell them.” She started walking. Time to search, she thought.
