Voltzenkrad is our first featured nation, and The Mad Islander had an opportunity to talk with him about his nation and life in the Islands! Voltzenkrad's factbook includes a large amount of detail about his nation, including history, law and culture. The Flying Clockwork County of Voltzenkrad is essentially a massive, heavily armed airship that uses clouds for fuel, and carries truly massive numbers of weapons such as anti-air batteries, Gatling guns and a main cannon known as the DREAM-R (Deadly Radioactive Emitting Anti Material Railgun Cannon.) Everything you need to know about our newest Featured Nation can be found in his very comprehensive Factbook, at www.nationstates.net/nation=voltzenkrad/detail=factbook - and right here, in this very interview!
Q: Why does Voltzenkrad ban disco balls? Your factbook explains your cheese ban, but what did disco balls do wrong?
A: February 2, 1999: Captain Ramius had been at the navigation wheel for over one hundred and twelve consecutive hours without sleep. It was a dark and dreary day in the sky, with nothing but dark gray clouds. It was his birthday, and yet he was stuck at the command bridge, piloting the ship out of this endless storm. He yawned for a while, then his eyelids started drooping, lower..... And lower..... An-

*562 people rush into the room yelling surprise
*Newly installed disco balls come down from the ceiling
At that moment, Ramius had a stroke and became blind, he then collapsed, and at the same time taking the navigation wheel out of its socket.
After about 4 minutes of screaming and panic, Voltzenkrad landed on top of a small and unnamed country and completely obliterated it within seconds.
The entire lower portion of Voltzenkrad was destroyed, but thankfully, these only housed the engine components and stuff and not the citizens.
Apparently the small country that was obliterated, was at war with another neighboring nation, and so this neighboring nation came to find that their rivals had been completely screwed and crushed.
This neighboring nation rejoiced and helped Voltzenkrad return to the sky after about 4 months of generous donations and aid from the nation.
So this became known as the 2.8 second war, or the war of 1999.
And disco balls have been banned ever since.
Q: If I make Voltzenkrad angry and you shoot the DREAMR at me, how screwed am I on a scale of “bloody nose” to “retroactively erased from the timeline?”
A: On a scale of bloody nose to completely eradicated from the fabric of history, you would get a bloody nose, followed by lung cancer, having your face melt, followed by your eyes, major organs, and arms. Also you might get skin cancer.
Oh, and then your nation would explode.
Q: Voltzenkrad has a very unique conception. Most nations in the 10,000 Islands are conceptualized as, well, islands. How did you get the idea for a nation-sized clockwork airship, fueled by clouds?
A: Voltzenkrad started as an island near the Soviet Union, created as the first artificial land mass that could be colonized by humans. Its purpose was as a fallback point for the Soviet Union just incase they lost WW2. Eventually, the citizens got bored and made giant turbines and flew away.
A: I originally got the idea after I played 215 hours of Guns of Icarus Online for two weeks straight.
A: As for the fueled by clouds part, I chose clouds because last time I used ducks and a couple nations started throwing rocks and animal rights activists at me.
Q: What brought you to the Islands, and what’s kept you around?
A: A very happy happy overly joyful guy dragged me here.
A: A very happy happy overly joyful guy is sticking a gun to my head 24/7.
Q: If you could change any one thing about the Islands, or about Nationstates in general, what would it be, if anything? And why?
A: I would make it mandatory to have everyone wear a miniature top hat on tuesdays with lunar eclipses.
A: I would like an interactive map for Nation States, like we have in the 10000 Islands, but more interactive.
Q: And finally, is there anything you'd like to take this opportunity to say? (Feel free to ignore this question if you have nothing else to say, and we'll just leave it out.)
A: Hi.
And we would like to take this opportunity to thank Voltzenkrad for answering our questions. Voltzenkrad is a fascinating nation and a great way to kick off our Featured Nations program!
