Here is the first of my editorials.
XKI’s latest round of elections yielded two surprisingly one-sided victories. Ater Nox crushed Duckian Empire – 35 (73%) to 13 (27%) – in the Blue Canaria North election, and Paffnia soundly defeated The Candy Lane – 35 (70%) to 15 (30%) – in New Republica South. Why were these races such landslides?
Well, when comparing the two winners, Ater and Paffnia, we see that both are well-known and are involved in many different areas of Ten Thousand Islands. I frequently see Ater Nox actively participating in the regional community, whether it be in regional activities such as Werewolves or in his dedicated service to TITO during updates. I don’t personally know Paffnia very well, but his handiwork can be seen throughout the forum, and many of the older citizens of XKI know him. Both winners are also well-decorated and have solid records. Ater served as the Lyonesse East senator and University Dean and began popular programs like the House Cup and Chess Club. Ater Nox is currently serving as one of the Tactical Officers of TITO and is a highly honored TITO Knight. Paffnia, another well-decorated Knight, has also served on the Council as the Lyonesse East senator and the senior senator, where he helped begin such projects as the Family Tree and forum levels.
The pair who received the short end of the stick, Duckyian Empire and Candy Lane, present a very different story. Although Candy Lane recently became the 68th TITO Knight, he made no mention of any honors or past experiences, and Ducky’s list pales beside Ater and Paffnia’s packed résumés. This was Candy Lane's second run for Senate since refounding. Unlike his prior race, Candy Lane decided not to run upon his achievements, but instead chose to campaign on ideas and dedication. Ducky, on the other hand, has no excuse. Having just served a term in the Senate seat he was running for, Ducky ought to have had a list of the changes he affected during his term or at least updated his campaign thread since his last race.
Obviously, XKI’s voters have grown tired of slow progress and uncertain promises. During Ducky’s successful election, he promised next to nothing. When prompted, he agreed to revive the featured nation program, which he then decided to declare still dormant. When asked during his latest campaign what he felt was the greatest contribution of the Council during his term, Ducky could only cite the recent recruiter pay raise. As one voter said, "We wanted a new face, he didn't really impress us, so now we're going back to someone we're familiar with.” The citizens want Senators who are actually doing what they’ve been elected to do, who make changes and actually do something. Even Candy Lane, who has no record, was resoundingly rejected because there was no guarantee that fresh blood was active blood, a hypothesis which Ducky disproved. The May 2014 elections send a clear warning to the Senate: Do your job, or you will be replaced. Success is not demanded, but Senators must strive for something.
