World of Werewolves
Werewolf games are one of the most fun things to participate in for many people on our forum. They are a great way for new Islanders to participate in the forums and get to know many of our long term residents. They also provide a means for visitors from other regions to interact with our natives. This column will explore the history of the game in 10KI, detail strategies that are used by various players and contain interviews with both players and hosts. For this inaugural article, we'll focus on a simple explanation of the game for those who have never played.
Werewolves is a game of logic and deduction that is based on Mafia, a party game which was invented in the USSR back in 1986. The game consists of two teams, the werewolf clan and the villagers. The game is divided into two phases - day and night. During the day phases everyone may put forward their theories as to who the werewolves are and everyone votes on who they'd like to lynch. At the end of the day phase the player with the votes against him/her is eliminated and their role made public. During the night phase, the wolf team selects one player that they'd like to kill off. Other power roles also elect how to use their abilities during the night phase. The wolf team wins if they manage to eliminate enough players to where the number of remaining wolves is equal to or greater than the remaining number of villagers. The villagers win if they are able to lynch all of the wolves.
Although designed to be a party game played in a live setting, the game lends itself easily to play on the forum.
The following is a list of some of the more common roles that are used in our games, although each host is free to experiment with roles and rules as they see fit.
1. Villagers - These are just ordinary townsfolk, they have no special powers or abilities, but they do participate in the day phase voting.
2. The Elder - The Elder 'empowers' the other power roles for the village. If the Elder is killed then the remaining good power roles lose their abilities. The Elder usually is granted two lives, although the role is not used in all games.
3. Defenders - Defenders are able to select one person during each night phase to defend. If the wolves attempt to kill someone who is being defended then the attack fails and the target lives. Defenders cannot defend the same person on consecutive nights. In some games the defenders know who each other are, but most often they are not given that knowledge.
4. The Seer - The Seer can choose one person to scan during each night phase. The game host will then privately reveal the role of the person who has been scanned.
Those are the most basic roles that you'll find in these games. There are other specialized roles that we use from time to time, and we'll explore those in future articles. If you've never played a game with us, we'd love to have you join us, just beware - you could become addicted to the fun.
