Saturday, October 4th 2014, about 10:15pm.
Minister of Defense Michael Loki was bored. It was customary that at least one member of the Confederate Government attended the opening session of a new Senate. For reasons passing understanding, Lord Chancellor Friar had chosen him for this "honour" today. The opening sessions were usually just a formality. New Junior Senators were inducted, speeches were held by officers of the Senate and House of Representatives. All in all it was purely ceremonial. Usually the Senate did not start working until one or two weeks later.
So far, the evening had brought no surprises. Two new Junior Senators had been inducted, the Vice Chairman of the House had given a short speech as had the new President of the Senate. Really the only noticeable thing about this evening was that the Director of the Senate was ill and was filled in for by a suspended Senator.
The ceremonial Korbschlaeger, a weapon similar to a sabre (although not equipped with a sharp blade) hit the table in front of the president, which caused the Minister to look down onto the Senate floor.
"Mr. Director, please call the item"
"Mr. President, Esteemed Senators, I call the next item: 'Articles of impeachment against the Lord Chancellor of Louisistan'"
That caused Loki to be wide awake. The Senators couldn't possibly be serious with this.
"I admit the floor to the Lord-at-arms"
The Senate Lord-at-arms Florian Aero was a young Senator, only in his third terms. Yet he already had advanced to one of the most prestigious posts in the Senate.
"Mr. President, on behalf of the Senate Executive Committee I introduce SR 190/1 'Articles of impeachment against the Lord Chancellor of Louisistan'. The EC believes that The Right Honorable Mr. Friar has engaged in multiple counts of corruption and has illegally accepted bribes and benefits on several occasions. The paperwork has been handed out by the floor assistants. Thank you."
What followed was a short and one-sided debate. Several Senators took the floor, yet none of them defended the Chancellor. Loki had known for some time that the Senators were not supportive of the Chancellor, but he hadn't thought they would come after him that hard.
Fifteen minutes later, the Senate President called the vote.
"There are no more requests to speak. I call the vote to impeach the Lord Chancellor. All those in favour raise there hands."
...
"The Senate has resolved by ten votes against naught to serve the Lord Chancellor with Articles of impeachment."
And with these words, Michael could feel his stomach turning.
