Mutanatia’s Mutant University, the only university in the country, was floundering. Since it was made a public, free-tuition, university, its reputation in the world, and perhaps the galaxy, was fading. In the midst of this was a decision by the Troika (the three-headed Presidency, as it was known in other parts of Earth) to have several free competitions. The winners of the competition, team, or otherwise, would be given a free, all-expenses paid, scholarship to anywhere in the galaxy, provided that they eventually returned to Mutanatia to teach for four years as either full-time or an adjunct.
This is the story of one such competition. Held at the end of every half-year in Mutanatia, the bowling competition was one of the most-coveted scholarships in the country. 64 competitors, all Kindarin, 32 women and 32 men, would go up against each other, head-to-head, in an attempt to have their future changed for the better.
This is the story of what happens in the bowling alley, where 64 people meet and greet on a magnificent alley, ten lanes long, at District B’s Mutant Hotell. This is the story where two students’ futures change for the better, one gets lucky, and all the rest go home.
In American society, unlike college sports, high school sports seem to mean very little (except, of course, for athletes trying for a university scholarship). However, in the world of high school sports in Mutanatia, it means the chance of a lifetime. It means the chance to unlock the successes of your future.
In fact, the only way to attend a university outside of Mutanatia’s free Mutant University is to achieve a scholarship. Some of them are based on subject and academic performance. But for those that fall in the middle of academic achievement, there is the sports scholarship.
The first sports scholarship in a given year, the Fall Semester Bowling Scholarship, brought to you by the Mutant Professional Bowling Organization in partnership with the Government of Mutanatia, is a Kindarin-only event. There are three scholarships awarded: the female scholarship, the male scholarship, and, of course, the Bonus Scholarship, which is awarded by the winner of the final female versus male game and is awarded to whatever prior competitor, male or female, the winner of that match chooses.
Besides the limits that an individual can put on the criteria for a scholarship, as well as the sponsoring organization’s criteria (the maintaining of a C or better average in college in this case), the government also adds an additional criteria of needing to rejoin the University for a total of at least ten part-time semesters as an adjunct professor.
Since the University has become the laughingstock of the world, if not the galaxy, the University is aiming to have the scholarship (and, hopefully, degree) winners repatriate to the University to teach and hopefully develop a set of best-practice criteria. These will be used in making a strict set of evaluative criteria on which all other professors will be graded.
This is the government’s attempt to bring back value to the free-of-charge, government-run university. This was a project spearheaded by former Troikess Mantitia in the later years of her Presidency, and since re-approved by the Senate and standing Troika ever since then.

While the government is busy debating its merits (and some believe the program is without them), sixty-four, thirty-two male and thirty-two female, lucky competitors got to square off against one another for the chance of a lifetime: a full-ride scholarship to any university and to any declarative major (which can be subject to change by the pupil once matriculated).
This is the story of two such bowlers, a Ms. F’armishi M’cktotor and a Mr. Sslopino M’ople, and how their worlds were turned upside-down… whether it was for the better or the worse is, of course, up to the reader to decide.
