Hello and welcome all aspiring lawyers, debaters, or those just looking for a fun game. This is the Taco Island Court of Random Spam Posts, a venerable and august body set up to hear petty arguments made up on the fly based on random Wikipedia articles, or as it really should be known - a brand new forum game. If you are interested in playing post your name here, or PM me and I'll add it to this post, so people know that they can call on you.
Overview:
So this was based on Tanzoria's complaint that Taco Island courts do not have a shared set of facts and that my witnesses were basically able to constantly move the goal post and make up facts as they go. Then, I remembered a drinking game I have played at the law frat that focuses more on procedures than facts.
So here is how I offered to solve it.
Rules:
- To start a case the plaintiff must post the challenge here below and then open a thread to have the case trial. The plaintiff picks the defense, the defense picks the judge. And the plaintiff calls the first witness.
- When the case is finished the result and articles should should be added to the original challenge post below
- Any player on the list can be called on as a witness, the defense, or the judge for that trial.
- When a witness is called they will need to go to www.wikipedia.org/ and hit the random article feature.
- Witnesses can only use facts from the random article they got and cannot tell either the plaintiff or the defense which article it is. Keep it handy, because after the verdict the witness should post the link in the trial so we can all see.
- It is up to the witness on how to interpret the article and formulate how best to use the information while testifying. (For example with a person article the witness would be able to be the person, or be accusing that person of something. Or an event article could be what happened to the plaintiff or defense. However they can only use facts found in the article to craft their testimony, and must be creative)
- The plaintiff goes first and can ask up to 20 questions to examine a witness, and make up a case. The plaintiff can call up to 3 witnesses. After they finish examining any witness they can present opening argument. The plaintiff must rest when they have exhausted their witnesses and presented their opening argument.
- The defense gets up to 25 cross examination questions for any plaintiff witness to rebut any charges. Unless it is a rebuttal witness and then the defense many ask 20 questions and the plaintiff gets 25 cross-examination questions. They can call up to 3 rebuttal witnesses. After their witness testimony is over they present the closing argument. The defense must rest when they have exhausted their rebuttal witnesses and presented the closing argument.
- When both sides have exhausted their moves and have rested, the judge will rule on any objections made during case before it goes to the jury for a vote.
- The jury is anyone else (player or otherwise) who posts their verdicts within 48 hrs of the judges rulings and final rebuttals. The 'winner' is determined by whichever side gets the most verdicts from the jury.
Objections:
- Either side may object to any question asked. Objections must be informative and funny and not distract from the randomness of the game.
- If opposing counsel withdraws the question then that question doesn't count to the asked question total. And should be ignored by the witness and jury.
- If opposing counsel challenges the objection, it counts to their asked question total and is ruled on by the judge near the end of the trial. If you win a challenged objection you get an additional rebuttal speech before the verdict. If you loose the challenge the question and answer are struck out and should be ignored by the jury.
- If both sides get rebuttal arguments then they proceed in the order plaintiff, defense until all won rebuttals are over.
Judges rule:
- the judge decides which objections are or are not valid (or funny enough) and award the final rebuttals to each side based on them
-Any witness not replying in a timely manner may be found in contempt will be struck from roster for that trial. The side which called the witness will then be able to call another witness immediately following a contempt ruling. The judge can re-admit the witness if called on again. To do so they must conduct an examination for fitness (up to the judge if the witness is reliable enough). If they are admitted, the witness must get a new random article from Wikipedia.
- The judge also rules on which side has been more random or funny, and can add an additional 1 rebuttal based on that
- Abandoned cases are those that have not been completed that are also not updated once in the last 7 days. And the judge may unilaterally rule to dismiss these cases.
- All judge rulings are final
Final rule:
- This is meant as fun and to be a bit crazy. So keep it cartoony professional !
tl/dr: Add name to list, challenge another player, call a witness, ask a bunch a questions, make a big long speech. All the facts come from Wikipedia. Judges decide what arguments get tossed out. Jury decides who was funnier. Have Fun!
I hope people enjoy this enough and make it popular enough that it could become its own sub-board here in Taco Island. Happy Spam Posting Everyone!
