Introduction
Welcome to Surp
The United States of Surp is a small, socially progressive nation, renowned for its compulsory military service, irreverence towards religion, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population hold their civil and political rights very dear, and take part in free and open elections.
The large, pro-business government prioritizes Defense, although Industry, Education, and Law & Order are also considered important. Citizens pay a flat income tax, with significant tax breaks for some industries and the poorer citizens.
The frighteningly efficient Surpian economy, is broadly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Publishing, and logging industry. Average income is impressive, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 17.5 times the poor.
Average Joe
Your average Surp having survived Surpian childhood, a Surpian education, the Surpian armed forces, and the Surpian weather, is a somewhat unpleasant individual. Indeed most Surpians question the sanity of their ancestors, and why the hell they would settle in such a supposedly godforsaken place. Most retired Surpians choose to live out their post military lives in the suburbs of major cities and towns, which tend to be idyllic and homely; In stark contrast, the engine rooms of the economy, the city and town centers, are a constant hive of activity 24/7 and home to the vast majority of Surps.
Surpian childhood
Surpian upbringing is brutal, to put it kindly! From the age of 4 all Surpians are bound by law to attend primary education, and then secondary education, from which a graduation at the age of 17 leads right into a required minimum 3 years active military service. As jarring as it sounds, this is the best kind of welfare the Surpian state offers; Since all expenses are paid for the individual in military service, the minimum starting salary of £15,000 SUP essentially becomes a guaranteed minimum £45,000 SUP government nest egg given to all birth citizens. Military life drills into every Surp the importance of self reliance, self discipline and exploitation. Once compulsory service has ended at the age of 20, only then can a Surp begin to decide their own path; With the money gained during their service, a Surp can take a relaxed approach to forging a career, to a point.
Forging a future
Finding a career in Surp, is not just a matter of aspiration, its a matter of survival; The complete lack of state welfare essentially makes being jobless an almost certain death sentence. There are homeless shelters and donor food banks, provided out of the kindness of a very few Surpians, but these are relegated to all but the largest cities, and even so are incapable of taking in everyone. This then is why crime, albeit low, is overwhelmingly relegated to the jobless, as a necessity of survival. For the majority of Surps however, forging a career is somewhat relaxed; The military nest egg ensures that a Surp has at least 2 years to land on their feet, and Surpians are usually snapped up by the industrial machine long before the nest egg has run dry.
Life in work
The 33% of Surpians employed by the various manufacturing sectors, are the heart of the economy, and crucial members of a system which singlehandedly keeps the Surpian wheels turning, churning out the vast majority of goods needed for everyday life; On average these Surps work 40 hour weeks, bringing home an average of £37,500 SUP, can expect 4 weeks leave a year, and to retire around 65.
The 11% of Surpians working in various I.T. industries, are the creme de la creme of the Surpian economy, showcasing the modern heart of Surp; The mean income of these Surps is £61,000 SUP, and average 35 hour work weeks while expecting 6 weeks leave a year, and to retire around 60.
The savagely tolling labour in Surp is relegated to the 12% of Surpians who work in the logging and mining industry, whereby their days are spent in the wilderness for months a time, miles from any civilisation; They can expect to retire around 50, after an average salary of £56,000 SUP, all for their straining endeavours of working 24/7 for months a time away from home.
Life after work
For the Surpians fortunate enough to reach retiring age still in good health, and with cash in the bank, life can finally get easier. The quiet, sprawling suburbs of the major cities, are the retreat of those who made it through life the Surpian way.
