NOTE: This is not the sign-up thread, this is me going over everything related to the game so it can be done as soon as we're ready to go.
Well, looks like I'll be up soon for hosting another WW game (and I might actually have to be active when I do so). So, I figured I better make sure I have everything working NOW, rather than finding out once we start that I didn't think something through.
THE GAME
Town of Salem, for those of you who don't know, is an online game pretty much identical to our WW games, except a hell of a lot faster. Each game holds up to 15 players (I won't be limiting the numbers if there's more than that), and each player has their own role that has its purpose in helping their side win. Some good, some bad, some neutral.
THE ROLES
For my first attempt at doing Town of Salem as a forum game, I'm just going to use the Classic Mode. Less roles, less confusion, and easier for me to work things out. The roles in this mode are:
Sheriff
Doctor
Investigator
Jailor
Medium
Godfather
Framer
Executioner
Escort
Mafioso
Lookout
Serial Killer
[Town Killing]
Jester
[Random Town]
Town Killing and Random Town will be randomly assigned roles from the list below. Speaking of which, UNLESS THE ROLE IS SPECIFICALLY IN THE LIST ABOVE, IT MIGHT NOT BE IN THE GAME! As in, just because I've detailed what the mayor can do, doesn't mean you will have a mayor. You'll have to figure it out for yourself. Also, random town could mean any town role EXCEPT Jailor. As in, you could have two doctors. Because I want to make this confusing for you.
Anyway, I'll add random mafia and town roles, maybe another Serial Killer if there's enough players (we'll see how many we get and decide then). As mentioned, each player will have their own role with its own abilities. Those are as follows:
TOWN
First, we'll start with the definite roles:
Sheriff: Each night, you can investigate one player and determine if they're in the mafia, or the Serial Killer. You will either be told they are in the mafia, the serial killer, or not suspicious. However, the Godfather will come up as not suspicious as well. And if your target was framed, they will come up guilty.
Doctor: Each night, you can heal one player. If they are attacked during the night, they will not die. You also have one self-heal, where you prevent yourself from dying. Anyone who is attacked but saved will be told that's what happened, but I won't say anything in the game thread.
Investigator: Similar to the Sheriff, but with the key difference that you are given a list of roles they COULD be. You will have to narrow it down based on educated guessing. And like with the sheriff, framed targets will come up suspicious.
Jailor: During the day phase, the jailor picks someone to spend the night in jail. That player won't be able to use their night ability (if they have one), and cannot be attacked/investigated. However, they can communicate anything they like to the jailor (through me). Generally, this will be the player's role and will (I'll explain wills later). The jailor also has three executions, that they can use whenever they like. However, if they kill a town member, they lose all remaining executions. They can still drag people off to jail though, and the jailed player still cannot do anything during the night. Mafia members will be notified if one of their number has been taken to jail. Also, if the jailor jails the serial killer, but doesn't decide to kill him, the serial killer kills the jailor. This doesn't happen with the mafia.
Medium: During the night, the medium can communicate with the dead. For this, I'm going to have a dead chat message thread THAT MAY ONLY BE USED DURING NIGHT PHASES. Also, once the medium is dead, they can use a séance. During any day phase, the medium picks one living player, and during the next night phase they tell them whatever they can before it ends.
Escort: During each night phase, the escort chooses a target, and that person's ability is blocked. This is regardless of whether they are good or evil. Similar to the jailor, if they "block" the serial killer, they die.
Lookout: Each night, the lookout camps outside someone's house, and sees who visited them. However, they do not distinguish who is good or bad, just who visited their target.
Now, the optional roles. The first two could fill the Town Killing or Random Town spot (or both), the others could be random town.
Veteran: Each night, the veteran has the option of going on alert. Anyone who visits the veteran on an alert night will be killed, regardless of alignment. However, you only get three alerts for the game.
Vigilante: Each night, you have the option of killing a player. However, you only have three shots, and if you kill a town member, you commit suicide the next night out of guilt. Also, the Godfather, Serial Killer, and Executioner are immune to your shots.
Bodyguard: Each night, you choose a player to protect. If someone attacks your target, you kill them, but at the cost of your own life. You only protect against those trying to kill your target, so if a Vigilante attacks, you kill the Vigilante. If you are attacked directly (meaning: the killer chose you, not your target), you will die and the attacker won't, unless you use your bulletproof vest (of which you have one). Using your bulletproof vest means you will not be protecting someone else that night.
Mayor: During any day phase, you may reveal yourself as the mayor. This gives you three lynch votes as opposed to one. However, revealing yourself means you cannot be healed by the doctor, and you cannot whisper or be whispered to (I'll explain whispering later).
Retributionist: During the night, you may choose one dead town member to come back from the dead. Any written record I made of that player's role will be removed. However, you only get to bring back one player, so use it wisely.
Spy: The spy can hear all whispers, all mafia night discussions, and see who the mafia visits. (In actual Town of Salem, they removed the hearing whispers ability, but I think that's stupid, so I'm keeping it).
Transporter: Each night, pick two players to switch places. Those players will be informed that they were transported. If the mafia/serial killer attacks one of the transported people, they will instead kill the other one. The transporter may transport themself. You cannot transport targets in jail.
MAFIA
First, the definite roles:
Godfather: Each night, pick a target to kill. The mafioso will kill that target for you. If the mafioso is blocked in some way, no-one will be attacked. If the mafioso picks a target and you are blocked, the mafioso will attack their target.
Framer: Each night, you pick a player. That player will appear evil to the Sheriff or Investigator. If the godfather and mafioso are dead, you will be promoted to mafioso.
Mafioso: Each night, you carry out the Godfather's orders. If the Godfather dies, you are promoted to Godfather.
Now, the optional roles:
Blackmailer: Each night, you pick a player. That player cannot speak during the next day phase. If they start getting votes against them, they may post the words "I am blackmailed", and nothing else. The player, however, can still vote for people to lynch. They may not give a reason for their vote. A common strategy of blackmailed players is to vote for someone to lynch, then immediately cancel it. Because of this, being blackmailed will not excuse you from dying of inactivity. The blackmailer can also see whispers.
Consigliere: Each night, you may find out the role of another player. Unlike with the Investigator, you will know exactly what role that player is.
Consort: Exactly the same as Escort, except you know who the mafia are and you know to avoid them.
Disguiser: Each night, you pick a living player and disguise yourself as them. If you are investigated, you will appear as the role of the player you disguised as. If you are killed while in disguise, you will appear as whatever you disguised as.
Forger: At night, you choose a target. If that player dies, you can change their will to whatever you want. You can only do this three times.
Janitor: At night, you choose a target. If your target dies, you remove everything about their identity except their name (as in: no role or will). You can only do this three times.
NEUTRAL
Executioner: This player wants to kill a random member of the town. It will not be the jailor or the mayor. They must have their target killed during the day. If not, they become a jester.
Serial Killer: Each night, they select a target to kill. They cannot kill the Godfather or the Executioner. If they are blocked by the escort, consort, or jailor, they will kill the one who blocked them (unless the jailor decides to kill them). They are immune at night.
Jester: The jester wants to be hung. However, once they are hung, they get to kill someone that voted for them to be killed.
So that's all the roles. For for some other explanations:
WILLS
Each player can write a Last Will. Your Last Will gets shown to everyone once you die. You can use your will to record valuable information. For example:
To make your will, just message me in the same message I sent your role in. Your will must be in one of those quote boxes, and you must update it each time with anything new. The most updated version will be what's shown to the living players. On the topic of what comes up after deaths...
DEATH NOTES
No, this has nothing to do with the anime. A death note in this game is a note left by the murderer for any number of reasons. You may wish to mock the other players, or you may have found a potential serial killer/godfather and want to warn everyone. Your death note will appear after every victim you have at night. To make one, you do exactly the same thing as your will, except write it in red. Note: only roles where you can kill have death notes.
WHISPERING
Whispering is where you tell someone something in secret. However, I will say who has whispered to who, and if there's a spy or a blackmailer, they will know what was said. To whisper, send a message to the person you want to talk to, and include me in it.
VOTING AND REVEALING YOUR ROLE
This I think is going to be one of the biggest issues with the game. Almost everyone will have a unique role, so you could just say your role out loud and figure out who's guilty from that. I'm thinking that, until a certain amount of players are dead, there should be a blanket "no role revealing, even if it's a lie" rule. The exception to this rule will be if you have over half the required number of votes to be killed. The required number of votes will be anything over 50% of the remaining players (for example, if there are 14 living players, a player needs 8 votes against them to be killed. Once that player has a minimum of 5 votes, they may claim a role, and do anything they can to prove it short of posting the message I sent you with your role. I won't confirm or deny their claim).
I think that's pretty much everything. I hope. I'll read over what I've written later and double check, and I'll amend things if you have any questions. For now, it's just past midnight here, and I want sleep, so...let me know what you think.
