Yes, this would be one problem with a world goevernment. Technically, it's not a military, just a security force. I admit, i'm quite the idealist with this idea...it was kind of more of a theory. It would be impractical, but in theory, i think a world government is best.
Odracir, you can join me in my space-station home. I'll give you a part of the station which you can get made a state of Mexico by the Ex-President. Then we can drop chemical bombs on the world and start our own Aryan-type race that will dominate the world (taken out of Moonraker. Great James Bond movie with the single coolest space-fight scene in the whole market). Or we can just proclaim ourselves, "Fighters of the Free World!!!"
Anyways, how did we get to this from the EU?

It started with a comment saying that it would be good to have a strong EU to counter America's power. I would have to agree with this, most anything involving humans requires a counter-force to balance it. The US is governement is meant to be a system of checks and balances.

The EU Enlargement is no idea. It is a logical process for a Union that claims to be "European". Europe is not just West Europe or some particular countries like Germany, France, UK, Spain and Italy. There are many other countries in Europe that should have the right, although they might not be politically ready at the moment, to get the access and get involved within the EU. So, the EU must be enlarged, until it rounds up the continent of Europe (exceptions: Switzerland, which is the coolest country in the world because it's neutral and it doesn't give a f+++ about what the UN says ;D, and other countries that do not want to be a part of the EU).
BTW, I'm strictly against Turkey's candidature for the EU. I love Istanbul but I'm gonna approve their candidature only when the country splits in two parts, so that the EU could accept the European part of Turkey. The Asian part... well... does Europe really need native fundamentalist Bedouins of the eastern Turkey who cross European borders because Turkey signed the Schengen Agreement? Whatsoever. I don't like the fact that Poland is in the EU also, but life goes on. (I heard that Poland tried to ban hot pants and cosmetic because those NORMAL things are nasty, dirty and sooo sinful... Well... It's a crazy world with crazy people ruling it.)

I am firmly for Turkey being accepted into the EU because of Turkey having a part of their country in Europe and alienating Eastern minorities more is hardly going to improve their disposition toward those in the west.

We need to work on turkey's human rights record, but ultimately give them a conduit to join. They're better in than out. Also, once that's happened we need to hold off further enlargement for a while. Work on the current system, build it up stronger, and then in say 20-30 years we can extend again. It's got to be a slow process or else people get scared and start blurting out random BS about sovereignty erosion, and the man in Belgium and all this hysteria.

Yes, Turkey should not be allowed to join the EU until many things change...
I was in Turkey in 2004... It is a VERY poor country... And when you walk down the streets, you rarely see any women except tourists...
My grandfather was born in Turkey of Greek parents, and his city (Smyrna) modern Izmir was burned down by the turks in the early 1900's... Although they are the most "progressive" of the middle eastern Islamic countries they do not allow Orthodox Christian churches to be built and in many cases simply sustained... They do not allow priests, bishops or even the Ecumenical Patriarch to wear their black cassocks in the streets. Many of the Patriarchates lands have been confiscated, and the Turkish government will not even allow the church to re-open a seminary which was built (I believe) many hundreds of years ago... The Turkish government does not acknowledge or allow the title of Ecumenical being ascribed to the Patriarch ... And for those of you who don't know Orthodox Christianity was the original Christian church before the schism of 1054 where the Orthodox and the catholic Church split and it is still the second largest Christian church with over 250 million members.
A country that does things like that should not be considered "European" enough to join the EU.

Turkey may have huge aspirations, but it's still in need of a lot of reforms before it becomes a EU member. Of course the same can be said of any of the nations of former Yuguslavia. I'd wait out until they got their act together instead of forcing the EU to fix everything.
I'm not worried about the EU becoming a dictatorship, because they are made up of many strong nations and no one dominant nation. I'm a hell of a lot more worried about the US Security and Prosperity Partnership to create the EU in the Americas, but with the difference of them calling the shots and screwing everyone else. That's not cool and may result in me moving to Europe or Australia if it ever happens.
