Report from Canada February 19, 2008 Prepared by: Almonaster Forum (29,009 posts) Population: 224 nations Delegate: Parrrrtay (60 endorsements) Reports have been a little patchy for a while, and this issue may well cover some news you have already heard from your local ambassador. We felt it was better to err on the side of full coverage, rather than risk leaving some of you in the dark. Domestic NewsWinter ElectionsIn a very poor turnout, the new cabinet were elected, mostly unopposed.
- Justice: Boreal Tundra
- Regional Affairs: Old Ogastein
- Defence: Youngtung
- Foreign Affairs: - vacant
- Doughnuts & Beer: Rock-Onia
New DelegateOur long-standing and highly-respected delegate Carbanousa had been declining in activity, and after a long silence, Almonaster declared himself as a candidate for delegate. Higsantium (briefly), Old Ogastein and Parrrrtay joined the contest, and Parrrtay emerged as the runaway winner. The contest period also saw the welcome return of a number of notable Canadian citizens who had previously left the region. Following the delegacy change, a concerted effort was made to fill the cabinet posts, and the following were added to the roster after passing Votes of Confidence from the region:
- Minister of Foreign Affairs: Almonaster
- Deputy PM: Ess
- Deputy MoJ: Kyleslavia
- Deputy MoRA: Redundancies
- Deputy MoD: Higsantium
- Deputy MoFA: Blackshear
- Deputy MoDB: Farfel the Dog
This gave us our first full cabinet in nearly a year. Forum ActivityThe forums are once again thriving, with a daily post rate holding steady in excess of the surge of interest which came from our new forums last year. We even had enough interest to feel the need for a Role-Play co-ordinator, and Mirahge has been appointed to the position. Old Ogastein has initiated a series of changes to the forum layout, some of which have already been implemented, and others yet to come. These have met with general approval. First up was the addition of a Real Life Entertainment Section. Why not stop by & check it out? Missing in ActionOur MoDB and resident guitar nut, Rock-Onia failed to report for cabinet duties, and we reluctantly moved to dismiss him. This was the first case brought under the ministerial impeachment legislation, and showed that the mechanism was workable. Fortunately Rock-Onia returned in time to save his job, having had computer and RL problems in the meantime. Political issuesThere have been several interesting debates in the House of Commons, concerning a variety of potential government reforms, notably the separation of executive and legislative branches of government. Recent arrival Fin has been particularly prominent in this area. Foreign AffairsNew EmbassiesCanada is delighted to announce that we have agreed to formal exchanges of Ambassadors with Europeia, and with The Exodus. We welcome the opportunity to deepen our ties with these regions and with our existing friends abroad. New ambassadorsWe have been pleased to receive visits from a number of regions, and were glad to welcome to our boards...
- Porcu - Ambasssador from Hyrule
- Sir Dingle Foot - Ambassador - Great Britain and Ireland
- Cordova I - then Foreign Secretary of Europeia.
- Oodge - Representative for the Exodus and Fedaration of Allied States
- Pez201 - Ambassador and new Foreign Secretary, Europeia.
- Rykkland - Prime Minister of The Last Kingdom
Embassy ClosureIn view of recent events in The North Pacific where Westwind / Lewis and Clark is holding power outwith the terms of their constitution, we have regretfully decided to break diplomatic ties. We wish the people of The North Pacific well, and hope that they will find a way to reconcile their differences and return to stable constitutional rule. On the Lighter SideWe have an extensive list of games in the Arcade - why not drop by and see if you can challenge our high scores? Our General RP area is currently hosting a game of "Stranded". Will the forumites survive on a desert island with only their wits and a few useful items? Time will tell. The Water Cooler remains the hub of our social arena. Some notable quotes from around the forum:
- Liarg in "What Are You Eating?":
- jD in Quote...Unquote:
- Farfel in the flavoured beer thread:
- Fin, in "Stranded!":

The ArcadeOur Minister of Doughnuts & Beer Esshas kept up the commitment she has shown in the Arcade! I can Highly Recommend the Torino 2006 CurlingBut I believe the Arcade has suffered due to the interest in our new, Political Parties in our House of Commons The House of Commons has, as alluded to in our May report, seen a lot of action regarding the establishment of Political parties. After lengthy debate, the consensus of opinion (in line with Canada's Constitutional rights) .... .... is that a citizen need only request a sub-forum for his or her party and the sub-forum WILL be created. Concerns that Political Parties in the House of Commons might threaten to change Regional Policies have, thus far, been without foundation. Changes will come but these are no longer regarded as a threat because of the responsible approach shown by the parties. An ammendment to "Petition to Recall" a Cabinet Minister was passed unanimously (The ammendment essentially speeds up the process in which a citizen has the right to petition for the recall of a minister (for whatever reason given on the petition)) The Water CoolerCanada's quest to achieve a 1,000 page topic continues at a slightly slower rate .... .... but the diversity of topics in that thread have proved most interesting In the 'Pinned' RL Pictures thread a few more brave souls have exposed themselves but the regions fascination by pictures of flowers and clouds might be an interesting study for any budding psychologist  Quote - UnQuoteShay on the The Last Person To Post Here Wins: Mach III thread: Omni's reply: N00bie katemmanza makes her mark in Dear Diary: Pez in the I Just... thread: katemmanza in any questions? Attendance was hampered by masking problems on Europeia's board. A quote from Pez at the summit summed up the reason why the summit did not reach a positive outcome: "Economies are the way that society distributes limited resources. Because resources don't exist on the forums, there's nothing to buy, so it doesn't work." Forum changesOld Ogastein added quick links to the top of the forum to help ease navigational issues. Many thanks, Ogy! Icons for ambassador(a)sA new look for ambassadors was approved by the cabinet. The group icons are for our esteemed visiting ambassador(a)s: EnglandEngland requested to have its embassy reopened. The request was denied at the end of the last term of office. The newly elected cabinet is currently considering their request. House of CommonsDue to inactivity, the Republican National Party, The Democratic Party of Canada and The Conservative Party of Canada forums were archived. The HoC also saw the formation of two new parties: The Moderate PartyThe Canadian Unity PartyAnd the uniting of these two parties into The Federalist PartyThere is much lively discussion concerning the possible creation of a titluary head of state, the concept of civil debate among parties, and separation of church and state. A new global domination role playing game - the World - made by Mirahge has been a success, although Mir did not know who Carmen Sandiego is. Niongor made this move: "By an over-whelming majority, Alberta votes to join the United States." The United States welcomes Alberta, especially its residents and musician Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans. The Office is now the longest running RP game. There have been two newer games made by Mirahge - Heroes and 28 Days, have become very popular across the region, despite (or maybe because of) the death and destruction. Quote - UnQuote
World Assembly:Canada was against the resolution "World Assembly Economic Union," yet it was passed in the WA with a vote of 2,841-1,622. Canada tied in their opinions for "Freedom of Assembly." There was a very low turn out on votes for this WA resolution. Since it would pass no matter which way the Canadian Delegate voted, Parkplace refrained from voting, and it was passed by the WA with a vote of 3,636-1,487. Canada approved to Repeal "Fair Criminal Trial," and it was passed by the WA with a vote of 2,780-1,577 House of CommonsThe Fat Whale Party held a party celebrating their victories in the elections. Region Population: 239 nations Delegate: The Pubs of Parkplace ( 63 dazzling endorsements) A.K.A. - ParrrrTay, Our Prime Minister. WA ResolutionsThe resolution "Repeal "Neutrality of Nations"" was defeated 2,264 votes to 1,534 in the WA. Canada voted for the repeal 5-0, but a usually vigilant Delegate Parrrrtay missed the vote at the WA. The resolution "Fairness in Criminal Trials" was passed 2,905 votes to 1,058 in the WA, but Canada voted 6-0 resoundingly against. On the resolution "Convention on Genocide" Canada's vote count was 3-1 against with no discussion. And guess what? The WA passed it overwhelmingly. Foreign AffairsTHE EAST PACIFIC The good news is that The East Pacific is headed back in the right direction, and in response to their request to re-establish diplomatic ties with Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Cabinet are hosting talks between the regions. Much rum and doughnuts have been consumed, and we have been pleased to have Kandarin, TEP Delegate Todd McCloud, Bolshikstan and ASBS visit us and explain some of the events of the last several months. THE WEST PACIFIC Canada has suspended diplomatic relations with The West Pacific after the coup by Eli and the creation of a distinctly undemocratic form of government. After conferring with Cabinet and the House of Commons, the Department of Foreign Affairs has recalled its ambassador to TWP - Almonaster - and closed both its embassies in the TWP and in Canada. We hope for future improvements and the restoration of democracy for the nations of TWP. TEXAS and YGGDRASIL VISIT RMB A large BBQ was held on the RMB for visitors from Texas and Yggdrasil. Goats were thrown in honor of the occasion and the fireworks display was awesome, by all accounts. Regional AffairsDiscussion on changing the election scheduling was discussed and put to a Cabinet vote. Receiving a vote of 4-0 for the issue was then put up to a regional vote with an outcome of 8-1 for shifting the timing of the elections and requiring notice of elections on the RMB as well as on the forum. Cabinet archived two more political parties: United Democratic Socialist Party, and Party of International Empathy. Ministry of Doughnuts and BeerThe ever-popular Caption It! contest has plenty of hilarity ensuing. Ministry of DefenseWe received the sad news that the MoD Niongor, aka Kit, was injured in a car accident and would not be able to return to the game for some time. The Cabinet moved to elevate Deputy Carbanousa to the position of Minister after two weeks absence of Niongor. Our caring thoughts go out to Kit, and we hope he returns to our community soon! House of Commonsdisposablepuppetland has been working on a new skin for the forums, which can be seen here. Lots of creativity and new ideas are being bantied about.
