The Imperial Union of Procrustes has just become the home of the VRCC. The Pope has recently visited and is now on his way. Also, King Akern is taking a tour of all the VRCC regions to celebrate this occasion.
PROCRUSTANS BLESSED The Virtual Roman Catholic Church has agreed to become a protectorate of the Imperial Union of Procrustes. This historic change happened just a couple of days after New Britannian Empire rejected the power of the church and formed their own Roman Britannian Catholic Church worshiping their emperor Konstantin. This deal also allows the Church to participate in Procrustes' rich debates on the world.
HE SPEAKS, DOES ANYONE LISTEN? Prime Minister Zekegard has just made a speech from his office in the Purple House (http://pm.procrustes.co.cc). In his speech, he begs for his Ministers help in bring this region back to its golden age. Zekegard also announces his plan to repeal the Compulsory Recruitment Bill in order to tempt the church back into Curia Regis. For a full outline of his speech visit procrustes.co.cc/topic/3740106/1
During the Last Prime Minister's garden Party Aradi Dune was awarded the Procrustes award for his contributions to the region.
In the recent election Zekegard has gone unopposed and has been reinstated as Prime Minister. congrats!
King Akern has also recently announced that whoever brings a large amount of activity back to the region will be made Crown Prince and set up as Regent while he goes away in the mysterious RL. Who shall win such a big prize? To be made King for a period of time? Things might get hot!

Oh yeah, sorry! Thanks Wordy!
Now, as many of you probably know, IUP has been hit with a rebellion. The upstarts managed to wipe the forum with the help of the traitorous Daswaniland. A new forum has been made, however, and everything is running as normal.
Throughout the whole affair the region of IUP, in the actual Nationstates game, has remained untouched. How is it that NBE has then recognized the upstarts as the true government? They have made a new region, Procrustes, but this region is NOT IUP.
Now IUP is asking for the recognition of 10000 to combat that of the impossible suggestion of NBE. IUP is not a raider region and all contact with NBE has just been cut off by NBE itself, according to recent intelligence.
Meanwhile Procrustes, the region created by the rebels, is managing it's own affairs, and appearing to be at war with NBE, the region that has supported them? Somethings missing here. IUP is asking 10000 islands help not only for recognition but for an answer to this and other unanswered questions.
Anyone wanting to help may contact Aradi Dune via TG or this account via PM.

On another note, the basic news for today is that Tofufreefood has been made the Crown Prince, and Prince Imhotep has fled the region, on his way to join the rebels. Tofufreefood currently serves as the Minister of Defence and has been doing an excellent job throughout this time of crisis.
I am sorry to hear the news of Prince Imhotep and of the forum distruction. My congratulations to Tofufreefood As far as I know our relations remain the same. It is the region of Imperial Union of Procrustes that we have an alliance with. Governments change as people come and go. Not sure if we can assist much with your questions regarding the rebels and their relations with NBE. Most important thing is your region is secure and manages to overcome the challenges the rebels have caused you.

We're all just basically wondering if we are stuck in the middle of something higher than us, to prevent any more trouble. But yes, you are right, the important thing is that we have overcome the rebel challenge thus far.
His majesty King Akern has declared a two-week regency of the Imperial Union of Procrustes, stating that he will be going away for this time period. In his place, Tofufreefood will be Regent, ruling as the King himself would until King Akern can return.
Tofufreefood has served IUP well in the past, being an excellent Minister of Defense. He was recently promoted to Deputy Prime Minister, and still serves in this position. He is also the heir to the throne, as King Akern has declared him Crown Prince, also quite recently.
On another note, IUP is busier than ever, with new members arriving and setting up forum accounts. One new member, with a past in IUP, has actually challenged our Prime Minister Zekegard for his position, and Zekegard has accepted the challenge. A "special" election is on the verge of being held mid-term, and debates are beginning in the forum.
The rebel Procrustes has become a almost non-existent threat, thanks to the support of 10000 Islands. They have, however, claimed another member of IUP. Ex-Prince Imhotep has betrayed his region and our trust and joined the rebels. He will be forever scorned and banned.
The Imperial Union of Procrustes is a small region, and has no current interest in colonizing anywhere. A rogue nation under the name of Watkins has been falsely creating colonies under IUP's name. He has attempted to feign an attack on several large regions by stating an IUP declaration of war. IUP, however, has NO affiliation to him or his region, the colony of the IUP www.nationstates.net/region=the_colony_of_the_iup.
DO NOT BELIEVE ANY STATEMENTS, AGREEMENTS, OR DECLARATIONS COMING FROM THIS PARTY!

Your welcome =)
AND THE RESULTS ARE IN
The Election votes have been tallied, and it seems Prime Minister Zekegard will be serving another term! Although he kept strong throughout the debates and elections, Coletra has fallen short of his goal of becoming PM of IUP. Zekegard has won an outstanding and clear victory. Coletra has not given up hope yet, however, and will continue to serve IUP under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where his strong will and fresh ideas will be welcomed.
The Prime Minister, as the previous term has drawn to a close due to the special election, has been holding his Garden Party here- procrustes.co.cc/topic/3928922/2/#new- and all award winners have been announced. Congrats to all! Everyone is currently looking forward to the re-opening of parliament and the start of a new term.
Last week, Lone Wolves United, a powerful and renowned raider region, declared war on 10000 Islands and TITO, our steadfast allies since the October Crisis, and a region with which we have had a relationship for much longer. Their ambassador to the IUP is Woonsocket, who Akern named the Duke Of Kenet a few months ago. Naturally, this war is of great interest to our region.
In the declaration of war, LWU stated that TITO used its old conflict with the Empire of Power, a long defeated region (which has been targeted for Liberation several times, all unsuccessfully [editor’s note: Irony]) as an excuse to hunt raiders mercilessly. The LWU also stated that although TITO and LWU had been fighting for five years now, LWU has now decided to eliminate TITO as a defender alliance once and for all.
Grub, the founder of 10000 Islands and TITO, responded in kind, confidently predicting TITO’s victory, and offering a 24 hour complete surrender period to LWU.
The surrender was not accepted.
Mafia of Equinox and the New Brittanian Empire have joined the LWU against TITO.
Zekegard, attempting to rally the region after the October Crisis.
Last week, Prime Minister Zekegard made a startling announcement; this will be his final term as Prime Minister of the Union. In his announcement, he cited several reasons for this decision, primarily a rapidly shrinking lack of dedication to work for the region. He says that he still wants to see the region succeed, but he knows that to do that it needs active leadership, a duty he can no longer perform. He also explained the timing of the announcement, saying that normally he would have made it near the end of his term, but he wanted to provide enough time for multiple candidates to begin building their campaigns.
The announcement was made following a build-up of anticipation in the region. Zekegard mentioned he had an announcement 3 days prior to actually making the announcement, and the region was very restless by the time it finally went public.
Reaction to the news was mixed, and there was a slight delay before people began to comment. Most members of the region expressed sadness at the coming loss, and even hope that Zekegard would one day reenter the political region. One member responded to the news with the words “Good riddance” and was hammered with insults and reprimands from several other citizens.
Zekegard is currently on a vacation from the region, citing a need to reenergize himself for the remainder of his term. He is expected back mid-week. Zekegard’s third term will end on February 21st, Union Day 2010.
Coletra Storms Out
Late last week, a new force in politics, Coletra, committed political suicide by going on a profanity strewn tirade on both the regional message board and the forum portal. Minister of Defense, Tofufreefood, was first to comment, heavily criticizing Coletra’s use of language and angry tone. Prime Minister Zekegard was next, threatening to remove Coletra from his new position as Minister of the Interior if he continued, a threat he carried out when the portal spam was discovered.
Coletra entered the region shortly after the October crisis, and immediately made a bid for control of the region. Zekegard responded in kind, and what was quite possibly the most vicious campaign in the IUP’s history followed. The incumbent, Zekegard, came out on top, maintaining his position in classic landslide fashion. Coletra surrendered graciously, and it seemed as through no ill will was left over from the brutal campaign.
This perception persisted for some time. Coletra continued to comment on flaws in the region and the ever present issue of inactivity, but it was all civilized. He attempted to solve the problem with his “Restoration Act”, which received varying reactions among the Curia. One commonly agreed on point was that one of it’s more unique ideas, the Citizens Committee (see the bill here: procrustes.co.cc/topic/3970663/1/ for more details) was a good idea, but more appropriate to a much larger region.
Coletra did not take this well. He interpreted the Curia’s unwillingness to accept the bill to mean that the entire Parliament was composed of Zekegard’s lackeys, who was intentionally blocking progress. Thus followed the profanity strewn rages.
A brutal outcry followed Coletra’s reaction, and believing that he never had any chance of gaining power in IUP, he abandoned it, fleeing to Islandia, where he continued to slander the IUP. Members hounded him, and after a few days of spamming the regional happenings, he retreated into his own password protected region, where he now resides with 3 other nations.
He is not expected to run in the next election.
Supremacy 1914: Day 24
The current distribution of power.
For more than three weeks now, Aradi Dune, Tofufreefood, Zekegard, and Akern, have been manipulating the great powers of WWI and carving their own European territories. Now, with 1 Great AI eliminated, 2 more ailing, and all but one smaller power destroyed, they are beginning to brush shoulders. The world currently looks a bit like this:
The Ottoman and Italian Empires are at war with Austria-Hungary- Austria has 1 province remaining and will fall in a day. Morocco is at war with Spain- Morocco is the projected victor. Sweden is at peace again.
The Ottoman Empire has been growing at an explosive rate, having gained 181 points in the past five days, an average growth rate of 36.2 points a day. With 37 provinces and 23% of the games points, Akern has finally overtaken Sweden in the index of power once more. Sweden is not far behind though, gaining an average of 14.8 points a day over the past 5 days, but maintaining a similar rate for far longer than Akern. Sweden has just finished splitting Germany with Italy and consuming Poland, and now contains 31 provinces and a whopping 448 points.
Both of these powers are in an entirely different league than the rest of the nations in the game. In third place on the Index of Power is Italy, having just shot up in recent days itself with a score of 207 points and 26 provinces. Italy recently split Germany with Sweden, finally cut into Belgium and destroyed it, and ended by tearing a chunk out of Austria before Akern finished it. It has been declining at a rate of 3.6 points in the past five days, although in the five days before that it was increasing at an average rate of 7 points per day. The decline is likely temporary. Morocco, meanwhile, has finally finished off Portugal after a 22 day war, and is now sweeping through Spain, having claimed three provinces in the past 2 days. Morocco has 21 provinces, 201 points, and has been increasing at an average rate of 5.2 points per day.
The Ottoman and Swedish Empires remain clearly dominant forces in the game, controlling 45% of the game’s points between them. Adding in the third place empire, Italy, the three will share 55% of the game’s points between them. It seems highly unlikely that anyone will be able to rise above these two without an extremely bold and brilliant move. However, the Industrial Age has entered the game in full force at this point, a factor that could easily upset the balance of power in the game. Only time will tell how this will end.
Point progression of human players.
Nuts, Bolts, and Blueprints 2
This is one section that is going to be included in the paper every month, probably the only one. It’s just a report on the current state of the paper, and the editor’s (Zekegard, if you were wondering) plans for the future of the paper.
We've switched to mainstream dating!
At the time of this writing, there are no pictures. However, by the time I post this, I should have some pictures in place for each article. In the future, I will attempt to customize some of these pictures. My image manipulation program (Gimp) is very reluctant to work with me though, so there is a good chance that it won’t work out. If anyone would like to volunteer to do images for me, please do write in. I’ll pay you a per issue salary, with a bonus for every image over five I request. We can negotiate deals privately.
If someone will remind me during the week, I’ll set up the account and customize a section for the PNI.
Aradi, please post this to embassies when possible.
I realize there’s much less content this week than last. I actually had ideas for I think two more articles, but silly me never wrote them down, and thus, they are lost. If anyone thinks they know what I may have been thinking, notify me and I’ll issue a “reprint”. Still getting my feet under me here, so please, bear with me.
Also, a note on Supremacy. I have all the DE Index of Power data saved to a Numbers file along with several graphs to track how everyone is doing. If anyone is interested in seeing this data, please inform me and I will forward you necessary screenshots (not sure if a non-Mac user can load a numbers file in an equivalent program). Also, the data changes daily. The article speaks in reference to Day 24, while the pictures reflect the data as of Day 25.

Supremacy 1914 - Versailles Approaches
Four powers remain- Sweden (671), The Ottoman Empire (630), Morocco (402), and Italy (298). It’s Day 38 now, and peace has come to Europe. The map:
The Swedish Empire now consists of Sweden, Denmark, half of Iceland, northern Germany, Poland, Britain, Ireland, and northern Russia. The Ottoman Empire has absorbed Serbia, Greece, Rumania, Bulgaria, south/south-eastern Austria-Hungary, a portion of France, and southern Russia. The Moroccan Empire has claimed Portugal and Spain. The Italian Empire controls Belgium, southern Germany, north-western Austria-Hungary, most of France, and half of Iceland.
The stage seems set for one final, massive war between these last great powers. But perhaps such a war will never take place. After all, there has been no warfare for 2 days now. The Swedish and Ottoman Empires, the major Superpowers militarily, economically, and points-wise, have made an alliance, placing the entirety of Eastern Europe and a total of 97 provinces under their control. The author, being a player, has no idea of diplomatic relations between Italy and Morocco, but even if the two were to unite against the Eastern Alliance, it’s unlikely that a war would have any significance. The latest stats from the DE put 66% of world military power in the hands of the Eastern Alliance. It seems unlikely that even a concentrated assault from the West would make much headway before a devastating counter-attack.
Still, war may be necessary to end the game. PNI charts indicate a plateau in the rate of score increase over since the end of the last war. Point shifts are always less than 10. All economies continue to grow at the same steady rate they have since pretty much the beginning of the game. Morale is high in all states, and the militaries of all powers continue to grow. It doesn’t appear that anyone can win through perpetual peace, and it’s possible that the powers could easily enter energy and food crises soon if their armies continue to grow with no wars to kill off soldiers.
Europe is in a tense state of false peace right now. It’s a time bomb waiting to go off, and although a member of the Eastern Alliance seems much more likely to win than either Italy or Morocco, a full scale war could potentially shatter their power. We wait with bated breath for the outcome of this battle.
Curia on the Move
Finally, several weeks after the beginning of the latest session of Parliament, two bills have been voted on and approved by the Curia Regis. They now await King Akern’s royal assent in the Hall of Divine Right.
It’s worth noting, however, that neither of these bills brings anything particularly new to the IUP. The first bill to enter voting, the Compulsory Government Recruiting Act II is a remake of a bill from Prince Imhotep’s term as PM. The goal of the bill was to force government members to recruit weekly, a minimum of eight(8) (increased to twelve in a rewrite) originally, and now a minimum of ten(10). Although initially, it was highly effective, inactivity began to climb. If the trend had continued, the entire government would have had to be fired, a devastating blow to the region. When Archbishop Cornwallis proposed an alternate recruiting strategy, Zekegard decided to issue a temporary repeal of the bill. Unfortunately, the October Crisis wiped out all record of the original bill, forced a new one to be written. Now with Cornwallis’s strategy having failed, this has been done. The bill is expected to go into effect shortly.
The second bill, the Justice Act 2010, had also been created before, but was one of many bills destroyed in the October Crisis. This bill establishes a new court and a Lord Chief Justice, along with regulations for the court and the process of choosing an LCJ.
Despite the fact that so far we’ve only seen repairs coming out of the Curia, this is a promising sign. The Curia is finally working again. With any luck, it will be moving onto new work soon.
Union Day Planning
Last week, Prime Minister Zekegard decided to get a jump on planning for Union Day 2011, which takes place on February 21st, 2011. Union day is the anniversary of the founding of the IUP, and is a time of great celebration for the region every year.
This year, it appears that the Prime Minister is trying to make sure that the Union Day celebrations are truly impressive, beginning planning several months in advance. He also opened early planning to the public, asking for suggestions of events the government can host on Union Day.
Multiple contests have been suggested since ideas began to be accepted, ranging from a writing competition to the strategy game “mafia” to a trivia game on regional history. Zekegard also plans to invite the region’s allies to the celebration, and has requested Prince Tofu and Imhotep to invite foreign dignitaries when they finally commence their regional tours. All the region’s most active members have contributed to the discussion, and the celebration is shaping up nicely.
For more details or to contribute to the discussion, visit this link. go.procrustes.co.cc/uniondayplan Suggestions are welcome from all, even citizens of other regions, although an approved forum account is required.
Elections Moved Up
Yesterday, December 26th, King Akern announced that this session of Parliament would be cut short. The previous election schedule had the next elections taking place just before Union Day and the results being announced on the holiday. Noticing the scheduling conflict, Akern decided to move the election up a full month. Election now begin on January 19th, with the results being announced on the 21st.
That’s in less than a month, which means that campaigning is likely to begin within the next week. There’s some question as to who will run. Within a week of his last victory, PM Zekegard announced that this would be his last term as Prime Minister, saying that he only ran to prevent the unknown Coletra (see previous issues for more detail) from taking control of the region. Coletra had planned to run this election, but with his untimely departure, it leaves the question of who intends to run. Prince Imhotep is a likely candidate, apparently believing that he has recovered from the problems that plagued his last term and is ready to give it another go. Considering Imhotep’s last term had high levels of activity, he has a strong following.
Still, he’s not the only qualified candidate. Prince Tofufree has made it clear that despite his own qualifications, he currently has no plans to run, citing a fear that if he ever had to resume his regency duties, he’d have all the power. Aradi Dune and R-chan are both qualified, but Aradi is chronically busy, and R-chan’s activity levels are inconsistent. Cordasa is fairly active, but also remains pretty unknown to the region as a whole. It remains to be seen who may decide to challenge him. If he were to run unopposed, it may even stir Zekegard, who is strongly against unopposed elections, to some form of opposition (editor’s "insight").
Either way, big things are coming to the region, and it’s best everyone prepare.
Nuts, Bolts, and Blueprints III
This is one section that is going to be included in the paper every month, probably the only one. It’s just a report on the current state of the paper, and the editor’s (Zekegard, if you were wondering) plans for the future of the paper.
Once again, there are no pictures at the time of writing, but there should be some by the time I publish this. That job as a graphic designer remains open, along with jobs as writers and slots for editorials. Seriously, do you guys want the entire thing written by the Prime Minister? There’s so much potential for bias there, no matter how good I may be at looking at things objectively.
For people reading this in our foreign embassies: I’d love to get some foreign correspondents. That is, someone that will write a brief summary of events in there regions from the past two weeks. I think that would make a fascinating edition to the PNI, but I’m sadly too lazy to try and research other regions myself. If you’re interested, please telegram the PNI through Nationstates, and we’ll negotiate terms of employment.
Switching to Roman numerals now for a more classical feel. I think this will be published in a new font as well, so tell me what you think.
Could someone please remind me to set up an account for the PNI sometime in the next two weeks? There’s no way I’ll remember before I start writing, and writing/editing/rewriting/formatting/finding pictures gets me so aggravated that I never feel like doing anything involving NS after that.
I still have all that Supremacy data if anyone wants it, although some of my graphs should be in the article.
And that’s all for this week. See you in two weeks for issue 4! PS: I never want to be the editor of a real paper. *shudder*
The Imperial Union of Procrustes would like to formally invite 10KI to the Union Day celebrations to take place from the 21st of February. Union Day and Union Week celebrates 2 years since the formation of the Imperial Union
The inactivity plague has struck the IUP again! The region has been even more inactive than usual, following a rather bland campaign last term for the current seat of Prime Minister. Even the PNI went offline for a few weeks after the editor took a break and forgot he still had responsibilities.
There’s certainly been discussion in the past weeks, but most of it is just idle chat. Members discussed the Egypt situation on the RMB briefly and Union Day has been referenced several times, but nothing significant has happened with the region.
The cause of the most recent spell of inactivity is uncertain. This is actually fairly unusual. Typically, there is a drop in activity after an election while the PM sets up his new cabinet and creates an agenda for his term. Although Prime Minister Imhotep has done all this, the post-election inactivity is still around. And with the Prime Minister unavailable at the moment, its unlikely that government will be able to rouse the people just now.
Fortunately, there is one event coming up that could change that: Union Day is this coming Monday. The Union Day celebrations, planned by last term’s cabinet, are set to last for the entirety of next week, and could inspire a return to activity for the region. Conversely, everyone could remain inactive, and the celebrations could fall flat on their face. We won’t know until we know though.
You are Hereby Cordially Invited...
To the Union Day Celebration Week 2011. All members of the Imperial Union of Procrustes and any region with whom we are on good terms with (if you can see this message, you count) is welcome to attend these celebrations. Simply sign up on the IUP forums at procrustes.co.cc/index/ and head to the Princess Elizabeth Media Center on Union Day, February 21st, where all Union Day celebrations shall occur, and find the relevant (very noticeable) topic.
Events this year will be spread over a week long period. More details can be found in the Ministry of the Interior on the forum, but they include: A Literary Competition (No more than 8 pages in a word processor, but poems and other shorter works obviously don’t have to go on that long. Mafia (An online game in real time of murder and intrigue) Online Flash (Multiplayer internet flash games, exact titles TBD) A Riddle Game (Forum posting) A Banner Creation Contest (Create a cool banner)
And possibly a lottery jackpot for forum members that want to get involved in the regional economy. Once again, more details can be found in the Ministry of the Interior.
A little under a month ago, the first regional game of Supremacy 1914 came to a tremendous close. Emperor Charles I of Sweden (Zekegard) came out on top, turning on his old Ottoman ally (Akern) and slaughtering the Turkish troops with aid from Sultan Eternal_Brethren (Aradi Dune). The battle was a 4 day affair, raging across all of Europe. The first shots were fired days after Akern left for a vacation, and although the aggressors waited long enough for AI to take control of the Empire, they seemed unwilling to face Akern himself. On the final day of the war, Akern returned and launched his remaining forces in a brutal, multi-pronged counterattack. Sadly for Akern, it was too little too late, and Emperor Charles was able to jump to 1050 points just hours later, claiming the title of winner.
Now, a new regional game has started. Currently, the map looks a bit like this:
Zekegard of the Ottoman Empire is very clearly in the lead, with almost twice as many points as the second place player, and a much larger empire and military than anyone else. Possibly due to the fact that everyone else is in West Europe.
Aradi Dune of France is solidly in second, with an average sized empire and a booming economy. He’s had some issues militarily, mainly having a 1:2 kill death rate in his wars with the British, but he remains strong and determined.
Akern of Morocco had a slow start after declaring war on Italy, a war which is only just wrapping up weeks later, but is now gaining the momentum back. He’s squashed Portugal and Italy and is now assaulting Britain, setting up a strong position for the future.
Imhotep of Germany has absorbed about half of Denmark, Ireland, and now Poland, and is now on the rise as well. Germany has the second largest army in the game at the moment, and is the only country keeping pace with the Ottoman machine.
Tofufreefood of Spain is not doing well at all, with a small economy, military, and little success in either arena. If he doesn’t step it up soon, he’s likely to be consumed by the greater powers of the game.
At the moment, it seems like the Ottoman Empire is an unbeatable juggernaut. But the other players are finally getting into the swing of things, and may be able to pull off some spectacular growth and overwhelm Zekegard. Only time will tell.
A Note From The Editor
As you can see, we’ve descended into some more basic formatting this edition. Namely, we’ve removed spoilers and pictures. Now, pictures will be reincorporated, but spoilers may be removed. They’re a pain for me to put in, and I think they take away from the aesthetic quality of the paper. If other people disagree with me on that though, please telegram Procrustean News Inc (Go to the Imperial Union of Procrustes region if you can’t find the nation, its in there) with comments.
As for why there are no pictures this week, I’m just tired and don’t feel like doing the extra work required right now. That shouldn’t be a common occurrence as I get back into my routine, and I may even come back later and throw some pictures in. Although I’m really not sure what pictures would fit with these articles...
As always, if you want to apply for a job or send it an editorial, feel free to contact me at Procrustean News Inc or Zekegard, both nations in the game.
Have a pleasant week and try to avoid getting eaten by aliens. That’s very not pleasant.
I would formally like to invite you all to the Imperial Union of Procrustes to celebrate 2 years since OUR founding and celebrate our Union Day/Week. Events and celebrations will be on till the 29th so please drop by any time.
New Britannian Empire has declared war on IUP for the sole reason of being allies with 10KI (yourselfs). As long standing allies the government has decided to stick with 10KI and fight NBE for our freedom.
We ask the support of 10KI during this time of conflict.
