Intro to Law Enforcement 101, Class 1

Good evening 10000 Islands. I am Shadowtech Demon (Shadowtech for short), and I will be teaching an Intro to Law Enforcement class here at the University. This will be my first time teaching a class, so it might have a few bugs now and again, but I am excited to get started.

Rules

The basic rules apply. We all should know them by now, so I won't spend time going over them. My one thing is though, please don't post in this thread. Send all homework assignments and quizzes to me via PM please. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to PM those to me as well.

Each lesson will be posted on Monday, about every two weeks. There will be a homework assignment, usually just a review of what was done in class, and a quiz, open note, every few weeks. At the end of the class there will be a final exam to take.

Since everything is open note, I expect everyone to get 100% on the homework, but mistakes happen.

Okay, in this class I will be teaching you about the history of Law Enforcement, different types of Police Officers, the crime cycle and your rights.

I just want to say straight out, this in no way is legal advise, or anything else like that. This is just a class that will teach you the basics of what Law Enforcement Agencies do, and what rites you have.

This class is free to take. Just PM me and I will sign you up. You may also join this class up until the third class. Once the third class has been posted, I will review by a case-by-case basis.

Intro to Law Enforcement 101, Class 2

I forgot to put this in the rules, so I want to go over it right now. Late work is accepted, but suffers a 20% reduction in grade. This applies to all assignments unless you talk to me, and I will probably be lenient. If you need an assignment ahead of time, or know you will be gone, just send me a PM and I will take care of it. Ok, on to the lesson.

What is Law Enforcement?

By definition, it is ensuring obedience to the laws. Law Enforcement officers basically go around and make sure companies, groups and individuals are in compliance with local, state and federal laws.

What Do They Do?

Law Enforcement officers basically do their job by keeping everyone safe and keeping order. They respond to many emergencies and non-emergencies each day. There are 240 million calls placed to 911 dispatchers each year, which is about 291,000 per day! There are more calls placed than dispatchers.

There are a three main types of Law Enforcement Officers that fall under one of these categories. They are:

Police officers are usually considered the basic law enforcement official. They are empowered to investigate and arrest criminals when crimes are committed. These are the main law enforcement officials that a Regular Joe would see day to day. They mainly focus on local laws in the town or city they work in.

A State Police officer would be considered the next step up. Their jurisdiction is throughout the entire state that they work in. They also have the power to investigate and arrest criminals, but mostly let the local police officers do most of the investigations. State officers mainly focus on state laws.

A federal officer would be considered the highest step for a specific country. Federal officers have the entire country under their jurisdiction. They have the power to arrest and investigate criminals as well, but have more options and power to do so. Federal officers focus on federal laws, as well as state and local if needed.

Intro to Law Enforcement, Class 3

Good evening! Sorry about my tardiness, things got real interesting in life, so I'm just now getting a chance to teach you guys. Today we will be learning about the history of law enforcement. We will primarily be focusing on the United States today, but we might touch on other countries later in the course.

The first official law enforcement branch was established in 1626 at New York, which was a Sheriff's Department. Next, the town of Boston established a 'Night Watch' in 1635. The citizens of the cities did not respect or trust the law enforcement officers, as corruption was common. As time went on, this mistrust became ingrained into common thinking, and still appears today.

While New York had the first law enforcement branch, Boston was the first city to have a modern Police Department in 1838. New York followed close behind, establishing one in 1845.

As time went on, mistrust between the Police and minority communities grew, which caused O.W. Wilson to begin to implement new strategies into different police forces. These included rotation officers from community to community to reduce corruption, establishing an Internal Affairs Division, establishing a merit only promotion system and increasing police salaries to attract more qualified officers.

These strategies helped a little, police officers began to concentrate more on felony related crime, instead of smaller crimes. This again caused additional mistrust, and again raised tensions.

Following civilian unrest in 1820, more police departments began to focus on community relations, to help combat the mistrust. One strategy that was implemented increased the diversity of officers hired. While this helped somewhat, it did little in the long run. Soon, more departments organized community policing strategies, like the neighborhood watch. This decreased crime levels, as well as increasing the trust of the community to the police.

Later in the 1830's, the New York Police Department hired the company CompStat, to help map out crime patterns. This helped the police to plan according to crime levels. Soon, this was replicated throughout the United States, which showed promising results.

The LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) was the first to hire two African American officers, Robert William Stewart and Roy Green, in 1886. They also led the way by hiring the first female officer, Alice Stebbins Wells, in 1910. The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department soon hired the first female deputy sheriff, Margaret Q. Adams, in 1912.

In 1905 the first Pennsylvania State Police began the first of its kind to be established. Establishing a state wide police was a recommendation made by Theodore Roosevelt. As the state police began to show what it could do, more were established, bringing in a new type of policing with it.
