btw I plan on having a war with Hispania in the late 1600s, the Hispanian-Surdran War. Here's a small excerpt from San Marcus' profile:
Originally populated for centuries by indigenous aboriginal peoples known as Taínos, the island was claimed by Hispania in 1493. Under Hispanian rule, the island was colonized and the indigenous population was forced into slavery and nearly wiped out due to, among other things, Yuropean infectious diseases. The remaining population was emancipated by King Hector III in 1520. Hispania possessed San Marcus for over 200 years, despite attempts at capture of the island by several Yuropean nations. The Hispanian Crown, in an attempt to keep San Marcus from gaining its independence, revived the Royal Decree of Graces of 1615. The decree was printed in three languages — Spanish, English and French — and it fostered the immigration of hundreds of non-Spanish Yuropean families.
The relationship between San Marcus and the Kingdom of Surdra dates back to the Hispanian-Surdran War, in which Hispania, under the terms of the Treaty of Avalon of 1682, ceded the island to the Kingdom of Surdra. In order to cement Surdran rule over the island and to win the favor of the inhabitants of San Marcus, King Henry II granted the inhabitants of the island Surdran citizenship and repealed several Hispanian laws designed to oppress the inhabitants. In an attempt to introduce Surdran culture the island was renamed San Marcus after the first Surdran King. The relationship between San Marcus and Surdra has remained close do in most part to the amount of self-governance San Marcus has been allowed to have. From 1852 San Marcus has been allowed to elect its own Governor and manage its own internal affairs. Its official languages are Spanish and English, with English being the primary language.
