Actually, I understand why the hospital does that. They already know the insurance company is going to try to negotiate down the prices they charge for drugs and patient services, so they artificially inflate the costs so they can get what they have to in order to stay solvent.
My main argument is that while I DO NOT support a single payer system, at least in the U.S., I do think there has to be a combination that we can all live with.

I've always been in support of a plan in which Providers would be compensated based upon how healthy their patients are.
Kinda like when Britain would ship prisoners to Australia. The ship captains were originally paid per ship load, but after many prisoners were neglected and died in route a shift in policy occured. Thus the captains were paid per surviving prisoner.
