A How-To Guide for Teaching Classes, by Mutanatia.
A few professors have contacted Nox and Me regarding how to teach a class in the XKI university. Here are few pointers right off the bat:
1) Make sure your questions are clear and concise
2) Try to have discussion be one of the features of your class. Participation = interactivity = good
3) Make sure your class syllabus is well organized. Follow the syllabus as closely as you can. Announce changes when they come up immediately.
4) For homework assignments, you can either test concepts, or simply have someone regurgitate what you told them.
A few more detailed questions/answers:
What subjects can I teach?
You can teach anything under the sun that can be done in forum format. However, there are few exceptions, namely pornography and anything illegal (for example, how to grow weed—though a botany class would be fine as long as no illegal plants are used).
What do I need to put up in a signup thread?
Three major things should be included in a signup thread:
1) Date the class starts
2) What will be covered (IE, the syllabus)
3) How long it will last
PRO TIP: For classes lasting a VERY long time, make sure there are breaks where we are linked to entertaining, fun stuff so as not to drain our brain.
How long should my class last?
That’s a tricky one. Your class should last for as long as you like (though we might change that). However, be careful as to not make that long so as to lose someone’s interest. See Pro Tip above. Additionally, it never hurts to give time off from class if you think you are having interest lost.
Do I have to grade my students? If so, How?
You should grade them, but it doesn’t have to be very formal. For instance, my classes are 95% participation, 5% essay-writing. If you don’t post a lot, you will be docked. That’s for a participation-driven class. As far as an assignment-driven class (which I don’t think I’d recommend), it can be reversed. You could even have them balanced out (Which is probably the best). However you decide to do it, please make sure to report grades to either me (Associate Dean) or Ater Nox (Dean).
If I have problems, who can I contact?
Ater Nox and Mutanatia
Thank you very much, and I look forward to see you teaching soon!
Mutanatia, Associate Dean.
