I found a lot of screenshots taken of 10000 Islands ingame through the years and thought it’d be fun to use them to write a history of 10ki. Since I’ve had several extended periods away from Nationstates and only joined 10ki back in 2008 (but was active in the defender sphere, which included TITO, as far back as 2003) the info here is going to be somewhat spotty.
My basic thought is to annotate each picture, prompted by what I notice in it. So it’ll be a mix of 10ki and NS history or pretty much whatever memories of mine each pic manage jog.
If any of you have comments, info or stories about what you see in the pics (or the time period surrounding each pic) please post it in this thread and I’ll add it to the history. I plan on posting the screenshots in batches, so this first one will deal with summer 2003.
Oh, and feel free to post in this thread whenever you want. I’ll just post a new ‘history’ post whenever I manage to finish a batch of annotations and then maybe make a more organised thread when I’m all done.

This is the earliest pic I’ve been able to find. It shows 10000 Islands just a couple of days before the Empire of Power invasion, which happened on 30 July 2003 and had a profound effect on the development of 10000 Islands.
For those who haven’t seen it yet this thread contains some info about the invasion:

Network Radio also has some posts about the invasion:
Interview with New Boniventure
networkradio.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=d&action=display&thread=86
New Boniventure was a longtime 10ki member, who posted some of the first warnings about a EoP attack on 10ki. From what I’ve been able to gather, before he joined 10ki and TITO he was involved in freelance defending and as a member of Urbanites he gathered intel and later became Intel Advocate there. From 1/04 to 9/04 he was a senator in 10ki.

10000 Islands give a statement: networkradio.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=d&action=display&thread=89
From the look of the RMB 10ki was a pretty quiet region at this point, but with some active members, who participated in roleplay ingame. TITO started as a roleplay defense treaty before the EoP invasion. Lyonnesse is the delegate of a 14 member region and she, TheSensitiveNewAge and Blue Canaria all show up in the first page of the UN report. Grub is celebrating his 1 billionth citizen, so has been around for ~6 months at this point.

In The East Pacific, 1 Infinite Loop is secure in the delegacy ever since he was put into the top spot by the Farkers when the new feeder region was only a couple of hours old.

July was a chaotic month for The South Pacific, which lost two delegates - Alpha C and Gatron- after they got ejected from the UN. The delegacy then went to LadyRebels, who has been a prominent member of TSP through the years. Under her The South Pacific became a member of the Atlantic Alliance, which was the first really big imperialist organisation in Nationstates. LadyRebels didn't really participate in the inner workings of the AA though and was resistant to meddling in her region, so TSP didn't feel the AA connection much, while it lasted.
Spring/summer of 2003 was the Atlantic Alliance’s heyday. Several wellknown defender groups were formed in response to their imperialist policies in Nationstates, including ADN and MASS. Under Accelsior (Thomasia) the org was somewhat imperialist, but politically astute, enough so to keep enemies at bay and charm neutrals. Under Pilmour, Loudamin and Mr Nonchalant it turned more invader.

Looks like Alpha C was a full ACC member. Didn't know that. Interesting.

Grub is now founder of 10000 Islands, so must have petitioned the moderators for founder status in the 20 days since the EoP invasion happened. Back in 2003 there was a period of time after founders got introduced in the game, where already founded regions could have a founder appointed. For regions like 10000 Islands, Nasicournia and Texas this was a good thing, since they gained skilled and stable players as their founder. Some regions though were lost to crashers, who gained foundership through trickery.
The region has grown from 14 to 55 members, the recruiting drive probably having been initiated after the EoP scare. Lyonnesse is still delegate, but New Republica is about to take over. TITO now exist as a defender force (at this point mostly to defend 10000 Islands though) and the region is starting to get involved with the rest of Nationstates.
Judging by the RMB founder clearing is already legal at this point. That’ll come back to haunt 10ki in the future though. Looking at the WFE 10ki is now formally allied with Texas and Urbanites, both regions, which helped 10ki during the EoP invasion. Urbanites especially was very active in defending back then.

In early august The Savage Lands took over as delegate of the Pacific;
networkradio.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=d&action=display&thread=90
For a while he and Thedoc traded the delegacy between them. The Pacific already had a somewhat closeknit community at this point, with an offsite forum. It was the first feeder region to get a defender military, Pacific Army, lead by The Savage Lands.
RRA took over the delegacy of the region Monte Carlo. This story is mostly interesting because Sir Lans, who’ve been a TITO Tactical Officer, was the native delegate of Monte Carlo before RRA moved in:

Due to their defense of 10ki and the fact that Urbanites players like Anarchotopia (who shows up on the 10ki regional happenings in this pic) and 3 am eternal were very active defenders Urbanites got targetted for invasion by Empire of Power as well. Looks like TITO and others were on the ball though and made sure the region didn’t fall. In 10ki New Republica is still campaigning for the delegacy, since Lyonnesse has less time to play and have let people know that she wouldn’t mind stepping down as delegate.
The last post on the RMB mentions a defense of the region 007 Big and Bouncy Breasts. I found this news report about it;
networkradio.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=d&action=display&thread=100
Personal aside; The players mentioned in that link (Mu-Mu, Griv, 3 am eternal and Thorn) were some of the old defenders who taught me a lot about defending and gameplay politics. I feel really fortunate that I got to hang out and defend with these people, when I was a bit of a newbie compared to them. I actually met Thorn in real life once. Very nice guy.

The invasion of Urbanites caused some frictions in that region, with 3 am eternal leaving the region due to some posts by the Urbanites delegate Insaaniyat.
NetworkRadio has the details:

Speaking from personal experience though, I’m happy to report that 3 am eternal and Insaaniyat made up and spent many a year happily defending NS from invaders together. I’ve defended with both of them over the years. 3 am eternal especially I really looked up to as an oldtime defender. My first stint as defender delegate in a bigger invasion I got because 3 am eternal asked everyone to endorse me, working out all the details.
In The Pacific Francos Spain gained the delegacy in late August, kicking the former delegate thedoc and stirring up NS gameplay for years to come.

Let me know if there’s any additional info I should add to the fist 3 pics.
