The year is 2369. The place is the former Cardassian Space Station Terok Nor, now designated as Deep Space 9, a Bajoran Space Station under Federation Administration....
The Cardassians had occupied Bajor for 50 years. Using Bajoran slave labor, they stripped the planet of its natural resources. That same labor was forced to build a space station called Terok Nor in orbit and process the ore.
But during the occupation, a resistance formed. After 50 years, they killed nearly 800,000 Cardassians. Although this came nowhere near the 10 million Bajorans who died, it was enough to force the Cardassians to withdraw.
After the pull out, the Bajorans entered into a hasty treaty with the United Federation of Planets. The Federation in turn dispatched Commander Benjamin Sisko to oversee Star Fleet Administration of the station, re-designated Deep Space 9. Sisko was in turn summoned to Bajor by the Kai, the religious leader of Bajor, who disclosed to him the secret of the "Tears of the Prophets." Also known as "orbs" they have the ability to provide the user with visions of the past, present, and future, depending on which orb is being used.
Sisko, fulfilling a destiny disclosed to him by the Kai discovers the the Celestial Temple of the Prophets. The crew of the station, using some keen engineering skill, moves the station from Bajor to the gateway of the temple, which is also functioning as a wormhole or short cut to the Gamma Quadrant, some 70,000 light years away.
Bajor, 3 hours away by runabout, becomes a center of commerce and trade, as well as exploration. But from the Gamma Quadrant comes a group called the Dominion. Led by the "Founders" the Dominion is bent on absolute rule of the galaxy. They rule the Gamma Quadrant through their shock troops, the genetically engineered Jem'Hadar and their Vorta overseers.
A Jem'Hadar is "hatched" and reaches full maturity in three earth days. They do not require food, sleep, or recreation. Their sole purpose is to fight and they have been bred with an unswerving loyalty to the Founders. They only require a constant supply of Ketracel White, a drug that provides them with all the nutrients they need to live. However, it also is providing them with an enzyme without which they were bred. Thus, they are addicted to "the white."
To many in the Gamma Quadrant, the founders are a mystery, as few have ever seen a founder. All that is known is that the Vorta communicate their commands and that failing to comply results in the Jem'Hadar coming. And then you die...
The founders are discovered to be a race of shape shifters, also known as Changelings. They can assume any shape and can do so with such skill that once they assume an identity, it is impossible to detect them as their true selves.
Now, on the brink of war, changelings have infiltrated Deep Space 9 with the sole mission of taking over the station and eliminating any and all opposed to Dominion rule. For whoever controls Deep Space Nine controls the wormhole and whoever controls the wormhole controls the fate of the Alpha Quadrant.
Should the Dominion take over the wormhole, they can bring in unlimited supplies, troops, and ships. But most importantly, they can continue to replenish the Jem'Hadar with "white." Should the Federation prevail, they will mine the entrance to the wormhole, thus cutting off the supplies and reinforcements.
Standing in their way is Odo, a changeling who was discovered near the wormhole and who now functions as the Chief of Security for DS9 under the command of Commander Sisko. He and his deputies must find the changeling infiltrators before all is lost and the founders claim Deep space 9 as their own...
