After almost three years of playing around on this forum, I might even write something here. While in assorted silly Taco Island threads, the ambassadors’ bar, the casino etc., I may write IC texts as an ambassador character, who enjoys amusements considerably more than ever dealing with paperwork, this thread is OOC. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, every text of mine that I post or link to here is written as a real person. Deutschland is a laid-back, casual region. Mostly people keep a nation here because chat in our language is welcome. Deutschland has always been a loose collection of players who speak German as native speakers or are in some way interested in it. We’re a comfy, unpretentious group. Typically, when one of us discovered a browser game with the tagline ‘create your own country’, we wanted to play around a bit designing our own nations, and perhaps have a friendly chat once in a while. In this respect, we’re like heaps and heaps of other players who associate in user created regions based on acquaintanceship or some sort of common interest – in the case of Deutschland the language we have in common. Our first founder was the nation Schwerin, founded in Antiquity. The earliest record of the region Deutschland on nsdossier.texasregion.net/history.aspx is from 2003. Still today, some of the nations are pretty old and have been in the region considerably long. The two most populous nations currently resident in Deutschland were founded in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Former delegates currently resident in Deutschland include the nations Typhootania, Scorgolia and Patagonien. As far as I know, we never bothered with formal delegate elections in the past. The region member that somehow had the most endorsements became delegate. Changes happened on occasion when a WA nation CTEd for a while, returned from CTE, or in some other way the endorsement count shifted. Typical reaction: ‘Huh, I’m delegate now? Oh well!’ Even though the region name is Deutschland, we have or have had players from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and many other real life countries (we even have a fictional nation that is loosely based on the Fürstentum Liechtenstein). We never bothered with invitation telegrams to new nations, as the mere number of nations in the region is not important to us. We see ourselves as an open group for anyone who is somehow interested in German speaking countries and our language. Also in this way, we are like a lot of user created regions which players can choose based on common interests. Since in this region we don’t do the sort of extra activities which elected or appointed volunteers are actually needed for, there’s been no huge urgency to elect anybody. Without the need, we're too lazy for a regional government just for the sake of having one. I don’t know about other people, but in my own experience, the real life routines of electing, being elected, organising elections and writing minutes of the whole thing comes along with pretty much any interest or subject pursued together with other people in even rudimentarily organised form. When one has done these things regularly in real life, the Wow!-effect of being able to hold elections in an online game isn’t so enormous. Anyone who is or has been a member of a registered association (Verein) or two in Germany knows what I’m talking about. Only time in my memory when we had a formal virtual regional election was when we elected Yermaney as our founder. Deutschland is more a friendly hangout than an administrative entity. The emissary from 10000 Islands to Deutschland is Louisistan . Luckily, since he’s a native speaker, he has neither language barriers to jump nor any culture shocks to absorb. It’s a great pleasure to have you with us in our lazy hangout, Louis! In addition, Louis has graciously accepted a regional officer position as Museumskurator (museum curator) in our museum region Deutsch, which we’re keeping around so that people can read up how organising a refound works. Deutschland also currently has a regional officer appointed by Yermaney – yours truly. Mostly this is a comfy sinecure and I’m merely backup, as our esteemed elected founder is very reliably around. March 2016 marks our three year refound anniversary. Never too late to actually post something in an embassy thread.

A number of texts relevant to this embassy already exist. They were just written elsewhere. Now quoted and linked for reading convenience. 23 May 2013 Baden-Württemberg introduction thread. Ba-Wue from Deutschland says Hello. Thread on 10000 Islands Forum. LinkThe Q & A thread was pretty enjoyable, but I have for the present let it fall by the wayside. The problem is that doing this well, and not just wishy-washy, is really time-consuming. Discussions in written English, and at times providing sources, requires considerable extra time and thought. Perhaps some day I’ll revive it. 4 July 2013 Germany trivia (RL): Ask us stuff here! Thread on the 10000 Islands forum. Link27 Apr 2013, reposted 10 Mar 2015 How We Refounded. Dispatch by Baden-Wuerttemberg on NationStates. LinkText by Baden-Wuerttemberg, Yermaney and Typhootania, first published on 27. April 2013. Reposted for reading convenience in handy, compact dispatch form.Initial situation The players of our region's member states were and still are not interested in participating in military gameplay. Our region's founder had ceased to exist, leaving the region vulnerable to invasions due to game mechanics. Compulsory military gameplay to us is as attractive and interesting as watching paint dry. It was only a matter of time before our region fell victim to one of such raids. Goal Restore the region as well as its community and secure the region against future assaults. Keep the region open and inviting to new nations joining. Avoid compulsory military gameplay. Continue playing NationStates in the ways we choose to play. Options To avoid military gameplay, it is necessary to look into the relevant game mechanics. One option is to keep the region passworded, saving it from invasions but unfortunately also from new members. Discarding this option, a way to prevent being invaded is to have a founder, since in a founderless region the WA delegate is automatically administrator of the region. Therefore, any group of players that can join a region and manage to generate enough endorsements can seize a founderless region and start wreaking havoc. An active founder can disable the WA delegate's access to regional control. To get the chance to do that, we needed to refound, i.e. create the region anew. Invisible password Typhootania, the WA delegate of the region Deutschland, password-protected the region. The delegate did not check the box 'Show password to residents.' The regional password was invisible to all nations except the delegate. Thus, the password was also invisible to invader sleepers residing in the region. Invader sleepers are nations which are in a region with the players' intent of preparing invasions. It was not necessary for the delegate to share the regional password with anyone except with the defenders who helped us with refounding. The password gave us the break needed for the democratic process. (Actually, our delegate didn't password until later, when we had started discussing the refounding option among WA nations. It is mentioned at this point in the text, because, as WA nations can be invader sleepers, this sequence – password-protecting the region before starting a discussion of refounding – is advisable.) Request for assistance We needed help from players skilled in military gameplay, willing to spend time on the project, able to show up with the necessary strength in numbers, trustworthy, and committed to defending our freedom to choose which game interactions with free consent between players we participate in, and which interactions we don't participate in. Inquiry via a telegram whether, hypothetically, the defender organisation TITO from the region 10000 Islands would help, in case the longer resident nations in the region Deutschland decided to refound. They replied that they would be happy to help. Technical advice Nations from Deutschland and 10000 Islands corresponded via telegrams on technical aspects. Finding a volunteer among WA nations The next step was to find out who was in favour of refounding, among WA nations resident in the region for some time. If there was a general tendency in support, we needed to sort out who could become future founder(s). We needed a volunteer willing to dedicate the necessary time and effort during the refounding process as delegate, willing to take on responsibility as founder in the long term, and trusted by sufficient nations in the region. Possibly, in case the volunteer became unavailable, we needed backup candidates. Technically, it was advantageous (but not vital) that the volunteer delegate be a nation with a relatively high influence ranking, so as to be able to eject nations if necessary. Regional influence rankings highest to lowest: Hermit Hegemony Dominator Superpower Power Powerbroker Eminence Grise Enforcer Dealmaker Instigator Contender Negotiator Auxiliary Ambassador Diplomat Envoy Duckspeaker Handshaker Truckler Vassal Minnow (March 2016 note: This was the list valid at the time. Additional intermediate regional influence levels apply now.)Baden-Wuerttemberg started a round of telegrams among WA nations in the region. (The original telegram was in German.) The contents were: Hello dear WA members in the region Deutschland, 1. Request to discuss this matter in private via telegrams, not on the RMB. Request to use telegrams to multiple nations for the discussion, like an email mailing list. 2. Refounding as an option that could be attempted, rather than abandoning the region. 3. Technical explanation of refounding: A new region of the same name, with a founder nation, either a new nation or an existing one. The regional message board and regional history disappear. The name Deutschland stays. 4. Possibility of assistance from the defender organisation TITO. They have already assisted various regions with refounding. 5. Refounding carries a considerable risk. There is a risk that somebody might try to grab the region name. We could take this risk, so that we don't need to be bothered with uninteresting invasions any more. In case the refound doesn't work out, option of jointly moving to a new region with another name. 6. Questions to WA members Question 1. Are you in support of refounding the region Deutschland? Yes/No Question 2. (If you answered 'Yes' to question 1.) Would you be a volunteer to carry out the process together with TITO, and take on responsibility as founder of Deutschland in the long term? Yes/No Question 3. (If you answered 'No' to question 2.) Whom do you nominate as delegate for the refounding process and future founder? (Multiple nominations are possible.) From the replies to this telegram, we sorted out who the volunteer delegate and future founder would be. Volunteer elected Once we had sorted out who the volunteer would be, our sitting delegate Typhootania temporarily resigned from the WA to drop the received endorsements, and we elected the volunteer Yermaney with our endorsements. The new delegate of the region Deutschland, Yermaney, corresponded with the TITO field commander Improving Wordiness (Wordy) from the region 10000 Islands about technical details. Founding a temporary region A temporary region was needed for nations to move to during the refounding process. Baden-Wuerttemberg, who with the nation Wortschatz had founded Deutsch as a possible backup region, and kept it passworded until it might be needed, shared the regional and founder passwords of Deutsch and Wortschatz with the delegate Yermaney and the TITO field commander Improving Wordiness (Wordy). Sharing the passwords of the temporary region was a necessary precaution, in case the player of Baden-Wuerttemberg might have become unavailable at some point. If the refound of Deutschland had not succeeded, the player of Yermaney would have had the option to keep the founder of Deutsch as a new region for the community. Roll call vote by telegram Yermaney sent a telegram to all nations in Deutschland. The recipients had one month time to vote on the proposal to refound the region. (Translation into English from the German original.) 'Dear nations in the region Deutschland, As our region has repeatedly had the nuisance of invasions, which we have no interest in, we are considering refounding it. Please reply to this telegram whether you are in favour of refounding, opposed, or abstain. Please note that this is a roll call vote. We will publish the results with the names of the nations. Please send back one of the three following sentences to me: - I am in favour of refounding - I am opposed to refounding - I abstain. If we don't hear from you before [one month after the sending date], we will count your vote as abstaining. Thank you!'Publication of votes Yermaney published on the RMB how each nation that responded had voted. 8 had voted in favour of refounding, 0 against, the rest abstained. Yermaney noted that refounding the region was decided. Opening the temporary region Regional password protection in the temporary region was removed. Wortschatz (Baden-Wuerttemberg) announced in the WFE of the temporary region Deutsch: 'Hello, nations from the region Deutschland. We are temporarily setting up camp here. Make yourselves comfortable.'Move to temporary region The delegate Yermaney sent a telegram to all nations in the region Deutschland, asking them to move to the temporary region. Telegram and post on the RMB: 'well then. in the current phase of refounding all nations have to leave deutschland. for that reason we will rally in the temporary region Deutsch. so please move there. once the critical mass left the region, i will kick the remaining nations. i will of course take note of the names and they will be invited back to new Deutschland once it is ready to accept new and old residents.'Defender nations arrive While nations from Deutschland started moving to the temporary region Deutsch, defender WA nations from 10000 Islands arrived and endorsed the delegate Yermaney. History records Baden-Wuerttemberg copied and archived the regional records, and reposted them on the RMB of the temporary region. These included the RMB archive, World Factbook Entry, regional flag, automatic region tags, chosen region tags, embassies, nations present in the region, regional history page. A RMB archive is available divided into several pages by clicking on 'Switch to Forum View' at the bottom of a region page. A history page is accessible by clicking on 'History...' on a region page. Ejection Yermaney ejected the last nations from Deutschland that had not yet moved. Then Yermaney moved to the temporary region too. Only nations of the defenders from 10000 Islands remained in Deutschland. Wait We waited for the players from 10000 Islands to complete the last step in their own time. Baden-Wuerttemberg wrote on the RMB in Deutsch: 'For everyone who has already arrived here in the temporary region Deutsch: Now it's not necessary any more to log in regularly, in order to notice it's time for our move. Here, we can just wait until the refounding process is over, and then move back at our leisure.'Baden-Wuerttemberg posted a telegram message from Yermaney on the RMB in Deutsch: 'Greetings, my henchmen! I have just kicked the last nations. Now comes the time to wait. The people from 10000 Islands will complete the last measures in their own time, and then you can all return. Just look in once in a while, and with some luck you'll have mail from me. Until later, Signed Yermaney'Refound Moving during the update requires exact timing. The players from 10000 Islands successfully completed the refound for us, with Yermaney as the founder nation. Return We said thank you to everyone who had helped us and celebrated. The founder Yermaney announced the opening of the region Deutschland and welcomed nations there. Our region: Deutschland You are welcome to telegram if you are considering refounding too and have a question we might be able to answer. For advice and support in refounding, you can contact defenders whom you trust. As additional documentation of the process, you can check out the RMB of our temporary region Deutsch. Deutschland Is Celebrating The Two Year Anniversary Of Its Refounding Dispatch by Baden-Wuerttemberg on NationStates. LinkLadies and Gentlemen, dear friends of the region Deutschland, Sometimes the urge strikes to carry the good bottles up from the cellar, invite friends, and throw a celebration – so why not commemorate a happy occasion together with people who made it possible. Lo and behold, an occasion presents itself. Deutschland is a laid-back, casual region. People mostly bring a nation and stay because we want a pleasant, cozy place to hang out together, where chat in our language is welcome. Some of our nations have been around for quite a long time. A couple of years ago, because playing without players being griefed on NationStates is conditional, our group decided we'd attempt to fulfil the conditions, i.e. wipe out and refound the region. We requested support from the 10000 Islands defender organisation TITO, which they generously gave, coordinated by Improving Wordiness (Wordy). A successful refound restores voluntariness of player-to-player interaction for one group of people. Thanks a bunch to everyone who contributed to some players not getting griefed away from an internet game. Let's open the good bottles, get out the regional specialities from different corners of Deutschland, and propose some toasts. And now a few screenshots from the collaborative effort. This is the old region with the previous founder Schwerin, founded in Antiquity, a player who after some time quite normally had moved on and stopped playing, as anyone may. The region was password protected by the previous delegate, Typhootania. The last posts on the RMB show the results of the roll call vote, and the request to move. The community's nations have moved to the temporary region. Yermaney, our elected new delegate and elected future founder volunteer, as last nation from the passworded Deutschland moves to the temporary region Deutsch, entrusting the region to the defender nations that have been invited.Just a couple of defender nations from 10000 Islands remain in Deutschland.A view from the temporary region: The refound is complete!Yermaney announces the re-opening of Deutschland, and nations start returning. We kept our temporary region from the refound as a museum. If anyone is interested who has never watched a larger community refound in action, you can still read up the process going through the RMB of Deutsch from beginning to end: Deutsch. For a description of the democratic and technical process, see the dispatch How We Refounded. And now on to the commemorative feasting. Prost!
27 December 2013 Voluntarily, temporarily handing over control of a user created region to other people. Why request support from TITO? TITO Reaches 2000th Successful Mission. Thread by Grub on the 10000 Islands Forum. LinkCongrats, TITO. In terms of military gameplay, NationStates is broken. Voluntariness is part of the very definition of playing a game. As long as game mechanics still force players into being participants in an invasion subgame they don't want, and force players to interact with invader players whom they don't want to interact with and would prefer to ignore, invading is admin-enabled trolling. This fundamental brokenness is something defenders can not fix. It's not your responsibility. Invaders lie all the time. An ever recurring lie is blaming those on the receiving end for their actions. Victim-blaming is really popular among invaders. Sometimes, for a change of dreary tune, they blame defenders. The truth is that invaders are responsible for their own actions. It's their choice. The admins are responsible for enabling them. In this broken game environment, our region chose the option of refounding. We are a laid-back region of players who want to relax and have fun with their own nations, and chat now and then. Without the refound, very probably various of the players in Deutschland would now not be playing NationStates any more, but would have left in disgust. Refounding involves voluntarily handing over control of an endangered region to defenders willing to invest the necessary time and skill. Why TITO? You are friendly, resourceful and truthful. You have shown on various previous occasions that you can be trusted with being given control of a region, and simply hand it back again. As you did with the new founder we elected. You are honest about the risk of refounding, which is considerable, but worth it. You don't use other players as a means to an end for vain self-glorification. You don't feel entitled to appropriating other players' regions as 'battlefields' for your own amusement. Invaders try to make everyone believe that what players on the receiving end of invasions experience and want does not matter. 10000 Islands has been on the receiving end of invasion. You think we do matter. You don't grovel to invaders. You don't waste your time seeking back-patting and insincere compliments from invader players who act nasty towards us. You have a regional community for entertainment, creativity and consensual interaction. You don't need invaders to keep you entertained. You value your own freedom to play as you choose, and interact with others who consent to play with you, and you value other players' freedom to do the same. TL;DR We remember. Thanks, TITO. Griefing other people in an online game is a subset of internet trolling. Obviously the whole refounding process is ridiculously roundabout and risky. It merely exists as an elaborate stopgap, because the website’s boss does not let user created regions have founder succession, and – root of the problem – does not even want all players to enjoy voluntary player-to-player interaction and the communities they create on the website free from internet trolling. 29 December 2013 In the real world, nobody who uses the internet still needs to learn the lesson that some people like to troll on the internet. Founder Succession: A Better Solution. Post on NationStates Forum. LinkCuriously enough, this argument is not rooted in the real world, but in the fictional world of fictional nations and fictional regions. It would make sense, if we were talking about nation simulation generated entirely by one huge computer. If you look at the real world, you see real players with real interests. These interests differ from player to player. Founderlessness as opt-in makes no sense. On a player level, founderlessness as forced opt-in is completely arbitrary. No player becomes somehow magically attracted to playing a specialised subgame because a founder nation CTEs, or because their region is one of the old ones that never had a founder. Military gameplay is not chosen by most players whom it affects. Voluntariness is part of the very definition of playing a game. You can’t force human players to enjoy something they don’t want. It’s not realistic. The second problem military gameplay poses in the real world is player interaction. In a well-designed game for humans, player interaction is voluntary, and players can ignore players whom they don’t want to play with. As long as NationStates game mechanics still force players to interact with players whom they don't want to interact with and would prefer to ignore, sadly invading is admin-enabled trolling. Core principles when designing a game for human players include that game admins have a responsibility not to enable trolling, and have a responsibility to ensure that players can choose whom they want to interact with and whom they don’t want to interact with. Also on a player level, the disdain for creation surprises me, as this is a game created by a writer. However, if creativity will indeed continue to be valued so little, I think you need to include a warning about it on the nation creation page, so that people don’t start writing anything on this site under false hopes. People who start playing a game usually don’t expect that other players are enabled to destroy their creations on a whim. I would however hope that you might possibly re-think this disdain for creation, under the premise that real human players play this game, not fictional nations. I think it’s a pity to effectively tell players who write to go away. Military gameplay is broken from the start because it was never deliberately designed specifically for those who wish to play it against other players. It can be interesting and attractive for those so predisposed, but it isn’t for everyone. Probably it’s possible to deliberately design game mechanics to let those players who are attracted to military gameplay opt in (nota bene every player who opts in actively also opts in potentially on the receiving end). Voluntary military gameplay would indeed be enjoyable for all involved, and not nasty and bitter as it is now. However, even considering such a design possibility would require those responsible to re-think the subgame as one involving real human players. Top 5 Questions About NationStates www.nationstates.net/page=news/2013/06/27/index.htmlMax Barry: 'I think it’s kind of part of the charm that you build this nation and then if it goes no further, then that’s fine. You just kind of, sort of potter around with your nation. And if you want to find other parts of this site, that have more elements to them, then you can do that as well.' Emphasis mine. This describes an idea of NationStates on a player level, designed for humans, with players being free to choose. It does not describe the game as it is now. 23 August 2014, 13 September 2014 Dedicated to WordyCommend Improving Wordiness Post on NationStates Forum. LinkFor. Hello from Deutschland. We have very good and happy memories from everyone who participated in our refound, and especially Improving Wordiness who organised the TITO support we requested. There are only very few persons about whom without any reservations whatsoever I can say: it is possible to voluntarily trust this person with control of an endangered region. She’s honest about the risks, uses all her skills to pull it off, and then she simply hands it back again. She values the freedom of others to play as we like, freely choosing our player-to-player interactions. Other players, and other player communities are never a means to an end for her to make herself feel important. Wordy is generous, resourceful, clear-sighted, kind hearted, and fun to talk to. See also a thank you note I wrote to TITO as a group. A small personal thing most people probably don't know. Our elected founder Yermaney and I preserved the temporary region from the refound of our laid-back German speaking community, and the nation name chosen for the temp founder of Deutsch is a small gesture dedicated to Improving Wordiness. Together, Wortschatz means vocabulary. Separately, Wort means word. Schatz is an endearment in our language and means treasure. Commend Improving Wordiness Post on NationStates forum. Since my hiatus, do I still get to be a representative of XKI at the region of Deutcshland? Currently, I am the Emissary to Deutschland. However, the position will be up for grabs soon, as I will resign from it after taking the seat as Delegate. You're welcome to apply then - your previous tenure will surely be a plus on your application.

Meanwhile in Deutschland... Yermaney has given the RO title 'Gründungsvater' to several nations that have resided in Deutschland since its new beginning. This is derived from the historical terms Gründungsvater and Gründungsmutter, founding father and founding mother. In real life, we refer in this shortened form for example to the historical people who wrote the Grundgesetz, the RL constitution in use today. The longer terms are 'Väter des Grundgesetzes' and 'Mütter des Grundgesetzes'. The short term can also be used in reference to any people who have been with any association from its beginning. For the football fans: Commentary on the European Championship. Translation: The European Championship is over. Germany is world champion. ... that's one way to look at it. We voted 'nope' on 'Liberate California'. Since Louisistan resigned from the emissary position to Deutschland when he became Delegate of 10000 Islands, his successor as emissary is now Witchcraft and Sorcery , from the U.S. who understands and speaks German excellently. Deutschland is still a cozy hangout with chat in German and sometimes various of our dialects. And today, on 16. August 2016, the region Deutschland is featured again.

Wow, it’s been five years already! Time to say hello to all Islanders from the region Deutschland again! We are one of the regions on NationStates that use the tag 'Non-English', meaning that we mostly have joined together because we share a native or acquired language. March 2018 is our five year refounding anniversary, which was made possible through the dedicated support by TITO members. To commemorate this happy occasion, will you come with me on a photographic walking tour through real life Deutschland in winter? We visit one spot in each Bundesland. The one which my virtual nation is named after comes first, but that’s merely alphabetic coincidence. There are 16 of them. There will be snowy landscapes, some architecture, some history, some tourism. Baden-WürttembergA nineteenth century mini-castle in gothic revival style. I’ve found it great fun to visit and hike through surrounding steep forests and plateau meadows. Seated on the edge of a steep Swabian Jura escarpment, Lichtenstein has a spectacular view. Don’t confuse the Swabian mini-castle Lichtenstein written with i, and the Fürstentum Liechtenstein written with ie, the latter being a sovereign European principality state located between Switzerland and Austria. Schloss Lichtenstein, Schwäbische Alb. Photo: Heribert Pohl. BayernA wild cat prowls through one of the few national parks in densely populated Germany. Species such as the shy wild cat (Felis silvestris) still find a little space here. This is Germany’s very first national park, established in 1970. Northeast lies the even larger adjacent protected area Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic. Other species living in the national park are for example the Eurasian lynx, beavers, otters, and several rare bat species. Among the Bundesländer, Bayern has the largest surface area, and is home to a host of popular destinations for inland and international tourism. The national park Bayerischer Wald is still mostly an inland tourism destination. Go here if you would like to see some European wilderness off the beaten track. Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald, Bavaria, Wild cat. Photo: Aconcagua. BerlinWhere do capital city dwellers go for some peace and quiet, and a breath of fresh air? For example the Grunewald, whose name means green wood. Grunewald. Photo: Patrick Schilf. BrandenburgNowadays we mostly know the name Fürst Pückler from the striped ice cream named Fürst-Pückler-Eis by its creator, a Prussian court chef, which in English is referred to as Neapolitan ice cream. Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, known under the loving honorific nickname 'Green Prince', left a rich legacy of exquisite landscape gardening. Here, a bridge in the park around Branitz Castle. Branitzer Park. Photo: Foto-Nomade. BremenBremen has the smallest surface area among the Bundesländer. Conversely, the cities it encompasses, Bremen and the North sea port Bremerhaven, are large and busy. But even here, a few nature reserves offer space for birds and other species, meadows which the river Wümme regularly freely overflows. Borgfelder Wümmewiesen. Photo: Bernhard Tholen. HamburgHamburg is, like Bremen, a Freie Hansestadt – a free Hanseatic League city state now Bundesland. With Germany’s noisy largest sea port and Hamburg’s rich cultural life, you still don’t need to travel far to find hidden quiet gems. North of the city, the Wittmoor (meaning white moor), is a tranquil nature reserve today, moors being rare and ecologically valuable. Wittmoor also has sites commemorating the victims of the area’s use as a concentration camp. Already in the early years, the national socialists established Konzentrationslager strewn all over the country for imprisoning and torturing people without any legal recourse. In Wittmoor, they imprisoned people as early as April 1933. Among the victims in Wittmoor were political opponents such as members of the parties KPD, SPD, and SAPD; Jehova’s Witnesses persecuted because of their conscientious objection against participating in military service and thus killing other human beings, and their steadfast refusal to submit to using the Nazi salute and other elements of the prescribed cult of the ‘Führer’ Hitler; as well as crossdressers and homosexual men, whom the Nazi ideology explicitly intended to either force into conformity or, failing that, murder. Outside the barbed wires, the concentration camps should frighten those still at liberty into silence. State repression of vocal political opposition and living diversity found its expression in a popular parody of a well-known evening prayer: “Lieber Gott, mach mich stumm, daß ich nicht nach Wittmoor kumm!” - ‘Dear God, strike me mute, so that I won’t be sent to Wittmoor.’. Wittmoor nature reserve. Photo: René Sievert. HessenWhat is an ‘Urwald’, a primeval forest? Do you define it as always having been free from human interference? Or is it enough if the traces of interfering humans are disappearing over the time? The Urwald Sababurg is not really an Urwald, because it was a wood pasture in the past. But it is today Hessen’s oldest nature reserve. Living old beeches and oaks impress hikers, and dead trees are home to a rich variety of species. In winter, when last summer’s leaves lie rotting on the ground, the night time visitor can look up to the glinting stars. Urwald Sababurg. Photo: Stephan R. Mecklenburg-VorpommernWe are in the lovely dunes on the shores of the Baltic Sea. In German we call it Ostsee, the sea to the East. The sea on the other side of the landway to Denmark is not called the West Sea, it’s called the North Sea. But seen from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Ostsee is North. Don’t ask me why, I’m from the South... Trade routes linked the Baltic area to the rest of Europe and the Mediterranean, even as far as ancient Egypt. What did they have, which their trade partners wanted? A luxury jewelry item. Fossilized resin from forests of yore, in English called amber, in German called Bernstein. Want to search for amber on the shores of the Baltic sea? Don’t bother in summer. Wait until winter, when high density of the cold salt water pushes the amber upwards. After a heavy autumn or winter storm blowing towards the coast, get up very early, bring a torch, and join the other amber treasure hunters on the beach. Be careful please, and carry your finds in a container such as a glass. Don’t warm them up in your hands or pockets. The sea still contains yellow pieces of phosphorus, left over from the second world war. Searchers can confuse phosphorus pieces with amber. It can ignite just from your body warmth and cause severe burns. Inspect your finds more closely later, by full daylight. Good luck on your amber treasure hunt! Warnemünde. Photo: Manfred Polenzky. NiedersachsenOne of the pretty sites you can visit as a tourist in Lower Saxony is Marienburg Castle. It’s neogothic, built in the nineteenth century as a birthday present by Georg V. von Hannover to his wife, Marie von Sachsen-Altenburg, and there you can see all sorts of princely stuff and whatnot… but here my mind starts to wander and I’m already getting lost, because I haven’t read much about the nineteenth century, and in terms of modern era royal this and that, I’m an ignorama who doesn’t read the yellow press. Schloss Marienburg. Photo: Michael Gäbler. Nordrhein-WestfahlenBlast furnace 3 by night. Ore and coal mined in the soil of the Ruhrgebiet, the area around the river Ruhr, was transported to the Heinrichshütte, founded in 1854. Here, labourers produced, cast, rolled, forged and processed coke, iron and steel. Mines and steelworks in the Ruhr region brought productive employment to the area as well as health hazards. Opencast pits have transformed the landscape. Coal mines don’t last forever. The entire Ruhr area has been undergoing structural changes. The 1987 decision by the company to close Heinrichshütte came as a shock to workers. Between 1987 and 2003, production at the Heinrichshütte was gradually ceased. The decommissioned blast furnace 3 is now part of an industrial museum and cultural centre. I visited it some years ago and climbed the tower along with others, where a former steel worker explained to us the perilous situation of the workers at the top, who needed to stay ever alert to which way the wind was blowing the escaping toxic fumes. Blast furnace 2 has been sold to a site in China: productive employment and health hazards. Heinrichshütte Hattingen. Photo: Annette Hudemann. Rheinland-PfalzThunder Mountain seems less than spectacular at first glance. What is its secret? In geological terms, the Donnersberg is a cryptodome, formed by magma that rose almost to the surface, forming an elevated dome, but did not quite spill over. It also holds more recent secrets from human activity. During the La Tène period, around 150 BC, an important settlement existed on the Donnersberg, covering some 240 hectares. The Romans called such a fortified settlement an oppidum. Part of the surrounding wall has been reconstructed and can be visited on a hike up the hill. Archaeological excavations are ongoing. Their trade partners in Greece called people North of the Alps collectively ‘Keltoi’ - Celts. Based on common traits in their material culture and art, settlements and tombs from the Hallstatt period around 800 BC – 450 BC, and the following La Tène period around 450 BC – 0 in the wide area North of the Alps are referred to as Celtic. We don’t know how the people who lived on Thunder Mountain called themselves. Donnersberg, Celtic Hill Fort, Rhineland-Palatinate. Photo: Kolling. SaarlandAnd now we are visiting the Romans. The buildings on this photo are entirely a reconstruction, but the excavated remains of the original Roman villa rustica can be admired right next to it. You can immerse yourself into Roman provincial lifestyle by visiting the reconstructed gatehouse, manor and residential buildings, courtyard, workshop area, tavern, and gardens. And of course you can see the epitome of Roman relaxation, the baths. Reconstructed Roman Villa Borg. Photo: Kulturstiftung Merzig-Wadern. SachsenA clear sunny day on a hiking trail in the snowed in Erzgebirge. Erzgebirge is the name of a mountain range running through Saxony in Germany and Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Its name means ‘Ore Mountains’. We can trace back tin mining in the ore mountains to 2500 BC. The tin trade ran along the Amber Route (which we touched in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Later, whenever new deposits, such as silver in the 12th century, were discovered in the ore mountains, the news spread rapidly. These waves of excitement and rapid migration were referred to as “Berggeschrey”: mountain yelling. Between 1946 and 1990, the SDAG Wismuth controlled uranium mining in the area. This company was the most important source of uranium for the Soviet Union. Low standards in protection resulted in many fatal accidents and in silicosis. Like other workers and neighbours of uranium mines in the world, Wismuth employees suffered heavily. Radiation induced lung cancer has taken its toll – victims of nuclear energy, and of the cold war arms race. Erzgebirge. Photo: sylvia11. Sachsen-AnhaltIn the heart of the Harz national park, we can find a mountain called Brocken, also called Blocksberg. If you’ve ever seen on stage or read Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s fantasy drama Faust I, you know that in the Walpurgisnacht, the night before May 1st, witches gather on the Blocksberg to dance. Boo! Brocken, Nationalpark Harz. Photo: Puusterke. Schleswig-HolsteinA fishing boat in the waters off the island Sylt in the North Sea. The cold winter has created drift ice. Sylt, Kutter. Photo: Wolfgang Vonier. ThüringenNowadays, steam locomotives in Germany only occasionally escape their museums for small tourist round trips. The regular train network is mostly electric, with added diesel trains in local traffic. I rode an old museum steam train once on a Sunday trip (though not in Thüringen), and can recommend the experience. But beware: You may not end up in Orient Express style splendour, but on proletarian wooden benches. Bring a cushion! Saalfeld, historical locomotive. Photo: pldm. This was our trip through all 16 Bundesländer of wintertime real world Deutschland. Thank you for joining me!

I grew up about 15 minutes from Schloss Lichtenstein Awesome. I have fond memories of visiting. The rooms inside are fun to look at, even though I wouldn't exactly call the interior tasteful. There's good cake to be had next door. The meadows on the plateau were full of blooming flowers and chirping crickets. For potential visitors I should add: even though Schloss Lichtenstein shown in the image is from the 19th century, in the forest very nearby lie the ruins of Burg Alt-Lichtenstein, a castle built between 1150 and 1200. It's well worth taking the little path to look at the old foundations. One of these days I need to do a proper and extensive tour of Germany. You miss out on a lot when you're stuck in the States. Travellers everywhere face the dilemma of wanting to explore at ease, and there being so many places to explore. Nobody wants to spend most of their free time in transport and hurrying, but many tourists end up like that, because they try to include too many things in too little time. If you plan a tour in Europe, I would recommend ignoring everything anyone writes or says about lists of 'must-sees'. Even though upon return, a few people may ask you 'What?! You were in X and didn't see Y?' Heh, so what. We are relatively free when we travel. We don't need to follow instructions. When you read up on potential places, you can include whatever strikes your personal interest.

In a brief departure from our usual lazy and informal lounging about, our region has, after so many years, accomplished a regional welcome telegram. It's written in German, but I tested the conversion into English in an online translation machine, which I must reluctantly admit did a fairly decent job with this particular text. Therefore, even if you can't read a word of German, feel free to have it online translated. Link to Dispatch Willkommenstelegramm DeutschlandAnd here's a copy of the text. Ansonsten, mach's dir gemütlich in Deutschland! Search for keywords: Deutsch. Search in Forums: General Discussion. Search within: Topic titles only.
