Mate, you sound like a tech journalist - getting any kind of kick backs by any chance?
Anywho, when it comes to tablets vs laptops its more about usability than speed and gizmos - tablets are great for watching movies, reading books and browsing facebook but have you ever tried to write an essay on one? And beyond the likes of Candy Crush Saga the games are terrible. You can't really beat that mouse and keyboard combo.
And don't even get me started on so called wearable tech - that sh.t is a gimmick, and will only be useful for looking like a hipster in bad coffee shops until the bulkiness of the current tech comes right down and the features go beyond shear novelty.
As far as laptops are concerned they aren't going anywhere because people still need them for work and stuff. But I do suspect as tablets take on more of the entertainment side of the market that you'll see a lot more of those notebooks/mini laptops and/or the laptop/tablet hybrids that have been doing the rounds as well.
Haha, I just like writing and sharing my thoughts, I'm not paid to be a journalist, though that might be nice.
What you say about laptops vs tablets is certainly true. And if you reread my post, you'll note that I didn't say tablets are vastly superior now, I said that is the way the trend is moving. Granted, today in 2014 the laptop market is still strong and viable. They can hold cd/dvd players, have functional keyboards, and generally can play far better games. But the trend is working against them. Check out the Nvidia Shield Tablet, the latest in tablet gaming technology. This is just one step on the long road of technology shift. Another step is voice-to-text. You mention writing essays being hard on a tablet. Believe me, I know. I am an aspiring writer, and I tried using my tablet to do some writing while I was away from home. Not so fun. But voice-to-text software helps loads in dictating those essays, then you can just edit them later when you get home.
Tablets are not the end-all of technology. They are a stepping stone, bridging the gap from conventional stationary hardware to new mobile tech. Have you seen Continuum? That science fiction is not so far off anymore. Soon tablets, too, will be replaced by wearable computers, integrated into your clothing. In a few decades or less, you'll never have to leave your computer behind. You'll be your computer.
