Ladies and gentlemen, when the concept to revive The Mad Islander was presented, I offered to revive my own thread, Inside the Islanders' Studio, a shameful pilfering of Bravo's "Inside the Actors' Studio." It is my hope that we can shed some light on everyday Islanders and get to know them, their island and the person behind the keyboard a little better. I'm still hoping for this to become a weekly series, but then again, I was supposed to have the first interviews posted last month but the Senate race took up my time and then got backlogged again, which is why it's only premiering now, on Oct. 6, rather than during the summer. I apologize for the delay.
My guest this evening is none other than our Delegate, Markanite. Since joining the region in 2009, Markanite has been an emissary, senator, dean...basically, if a job needed to be done, he did it. Following the unfortunate series of events in August, he stepped in and answered the call, running for Delegate. Please welcome to the Islanders' Studio, our friend, our colleague, Markanite.
Nixon: Markanite, let's begin nice and easy first, what in the world does "Markanite" mean?
Markanite: Hey Nixon! Markanite is a completely unimaginative mixture of my name (Mark ) and -anite-, which I came up with as I had the game 'Knights of the Old Republic' sitting in front of me. I just thought it fitted together quite nicely.
I'd like to think it stand for Loyalty, Integrity and Respect.
Nixon: You've had quite a successful career in the region - a minister, an elected senator, dean, emissary and now delegate - which has been the most rewarding for you?
Markanite: This was a really difficult question! I love the Islands and have tried to do my best to help contribute to its growth and continuation. I loved each role but I think being the Minister of Education was the most rewarding. I really enjoyed helping to integrate and welcome new Islanders to our great region.
I also do a lot of this as Delegate too so its great to be doing this again.
I'm sure we would all like to forget the circumstances in which you came to be delegate, nonetheless, we're glad you're there. What do you hope to accomplish during your tenure as our delegate?
I hope to be a stable and active Delegate, I feel very blessed to have been allowed to serve as Delegate again and I hope I will not let our region down. I want to keep our emissaries active, strengthen our relations with our allies and keep 10000 Islands the fun place it has always been.
Nixon: Do you have a favorite aspect of the region? How about favorite islander?
Markanite: I'm not sure about a favourite aspect of the region, I love the ideals of the region mainly defending and standing up against the bullies in this game but the region offers much more than just that and the fact we are so well rounded is what I love about the region.
As for favourite Islander, that has to be MinnaCaroline, she is the perfect Islander and friend!
Nixon: Here, here. There can be no denying the awesomeness that is MinnaCaroline. Nobody does it better, kiddo. Now back to Markanite, you’ve done almost everything a person can possibly do here in the region. I guess my question is, what’s next for Markanite?
Markanite: To be honest I'm not exactly sure, any ideas are welcome! I gotta through this term as Delegate first.
Nixon: Now let's get to the person that is behind the Markanite. My notecard here says you were born in Ireland?
Markanite: Yup, I was born and raised in County Armagh, which is technicaly in Northern Ireland but that's a long and complicated issue.
Nixon: We here in the Isles of Nixon do not refer to the political entity that is titled on the map as "Northern Ireland." There is but only one island, and therefore only one Ireland. In the words that have been passed on from generation to generation on the Emerald Isle, tiocfaidh ar la! Anyways, back to the questions. When you're not logged into the islands, what is the person behind "Markanite" doing? In other words, what do you do for fun?
Markanite: I like spending time with my family and friends. Nearly all my family lives in the same town and there are a lot of us so there is always someone around. I do occasionally go out on nights out and take the odd vodka or two.
Nixon: Some people use their “island” as a sort of mask; it gives them the opportunity to be a little different from their normal selves. Are there any differences between you and “Markanite”?
Markanite: Not really, I haven't answered too many Issues in a while but I was answering them the way I felt personally, so Markanite is a reflection of my beliefs. So looks like I'm Inoffensive Centrist Democratic kind of person.
Nixon: What is your ethnic background? 100% Irish?
Markanite: Yup! Born and raised in Lurgan, Co.Armagh.
Nixon: "Michael Collins"...great movie or greatest movie?
Markanite: Great movie, greatest might be a little too far.
Nixon: Blasphemy! How dare you insult the greatness that is Liam Neeson! Might as well start calling yourself Paisleyite! Alas, you’re stuck on a desert island (that’s not a member of our illustrious region) and can have one book, one DVD and one compact disc – what would they be?
Markanite: ]I was totally going to say something smart like 'there would be no electricity on a desert Island' but I guess I'll answer it like a normal person.
Book would probably be The Hobbit, it has remained my favourite book. DVD would be a family film of my mum, Dad and brothers on holiday before my father passed away. Let me get back to you on the compact disc!
Nixon: Do you have any regrets about anything you’ve done, or perhaps haven’t done, in the past?
Markanite: Nothing springs to mind, I probably could be more assertive as I think that's a major flaw I have.
Nixon: And with that, we turn to the final ten questions, borrowed from Bernard Pivot’s Bouillon de culture: What is your favorite word?
Markanite: Probably one I use most often: Thanks
Nixon: What is your least favorite word?
Markanite: There are a lot.
Nixon: What turns you on?
Markanite shamelessly doesn't answer this question
Nixon: What turns you off?
Markanite shamelessly doesn't answer this question[/i]
Nixon: What sound or noise do you love?
Markanite: Love the sound of rain hitting off the window at night.
Nixon: What sound or noise do you hate?
Markanite: Leaf blowers.
Nixon: What is your favorite curse word?
Markanite: My most common one used at home would be 'Boot' which is slang for someone who is acting annoying or like an idiot.
Nixon: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Markanite: I'd like to be a Teacher.
Nixon: What profession would you not like to do?
Markanite: I don't think policing, especially in my own country would be a career for me.
Nixon: Amen to that. PSNI are leaps and bounds better than their predecessors, but there's still a very long way to go to restore the trust. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Markanite: Probably something along the lines of 'Here's those who went before you and I'll watch those you left behind'
I would like to thank Markanite for taking the time to answer some questions and hopefully we've all learned a little bit more about our esteemed colleague. Thanks again to our guest, Markanite and stay tuned for another edition of Inside the Islanders' Studio.
