Welcome, teachers, alumni, students and potential students! I have an open-door policy, so feel free to stop by with any questions or ideas you might have. And if you just want to stop in for a chat or a drink, that's fine too.

I like the idea of casual conversation threads in different languages, and hope a few more forum members, native speakers and people who are learning a language, will create threads. This subforum is pretty well suited for this sort of thing. There are plenty of RL and website resources for learning and practising languages, and there are plenty of venues for trying them out in casual chat. No need to reinvent the wheel here, but threads in the University subforum can increase visibility of the multilingual potential that is already present on this forum. As 10000 Islands has so many members, I think it’s worth it shouting a Hello in language X, and see if someone replies after a while.
Perhaps the University Dean would even be interested in messaging some forum members known to already speak or learn various languages? Sometimes it just takes a little encouragement.
Just start a conversation thread in your language, or one you’re learning, and even if it takes a year or several years, perhaps someone-or-other will show up and answer.

I really like this idea, Ba-Wu. Who all have we got here, non-native English speakers, that we can ask to participate? Kanta Hame comes to mind, you, I think Shy Guy is a Swede but who else? I'd like to find a Spanish speaker so I can practice -

The German conversation thread is great fun for me. I love being able to have a casual chat thread in my second language. It would be awesome if we could expand on this idea!
I seem to recall a few Spanish speakers around here but that was some time ago Woon, I don't know if we have any right now.

I'm drinking wine so I hope you have your favorite drink in hand as well.
Because I'm drinking wine I will tell you this: I have a tendency to try to excel at things that don't have any significant relevance to my life other than being extremely interesting to me.
My current venture is attempting to learn Swedish (I'm a 26 year old female in landlocked Illinois and I plan weddings for a living... I've never met a native Swedish speaker but I love the culture and arts they produce... specifically their film industry. It's dark and gritty. I love it, but I don't love subtitles).
I posted a thread reaching out to other nations who may be of assistance, but if you, the Dean, can think of any other way I can find some sort of Swedish network, I would appreciate it.

I speak casual, broken Spanish and would love to participate! My mom grew up in Guatemala (grandpa in the Air Force) and speaks it fluently. I would love to expand my knowledge!
