Welcome to the post game thread and after party for Werewolves 50
Thank you to everyone who played this time around, it was a lot of fun for me. I hope that I didn't mess things up too badly in my first job of hosting a game here. Congratulations once more to the Werewolf team on their victory. I'd also like to thank everyone for entrusting me with hosting game number 50 and for holding off on replacing me during my hiatus. Thanks once again to Blaat and Ba-Wu for allowing the use of their names in my story. I'd also like to dedicate the storyline to Barry and I hope that he returns soon.
I'm not going to break everything down and show every action on every day because you've seen who died when and if you were part of the dead thread then you've seen that commentary as well. Rather, I'm going to just walk through the game and offer my thoughts on how things went. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.
Day 1 was pretty much devoted to box selection and presidential voting. Louis was elected even though he didn't ask for the job. He went so far as to point out that he'd have limited access to the internet for the first few days of the game, a move which I thought was to try and get people to vote elsewhere. Personally, I thought that was a red flag, but nobody else seemed to share my thoughts on that matter at the time.
Night 1 saw no wolves make a successful attack, although 2 wolves did target Ater Nox and thus there was a pack of 3 wolves on the first night. They attacked a defended target though. We also saw our first night time wolf death with HS choosing to put his caltrops outside Sauron's room.
Day 2 started out normal enough, but with time running out and the tide against him, Boltor revealed his role AND used his box to kill Ater Nox, thus earning the trust of the village which would last for the remainder of the game. He was helped in his defense by the suddenly erratic behavior of Coromandall. Coro's box forced him to vote at least once for each person who received a vote during that day phase. He was prevented from saying that his actions were caused by a box effect until nightfall. Technically, he could have waited until 5 minutes or so before the phase ended and then done his whirlwind act, and probably would have survived to plead his case once night fell.
Night 2 was the toughest night for me as the host. After Boltor revealed himself, everyone decided to take advantage of me allowing private messages by contacting him. I realized at once that this was going to create a problem. Instead of just stopping the messages though, I overthought things and decided to mess with Gunny's box instead. His box was originally supposed to allow him to cancel a night phase in return for lynching 2 people during the following day phase. I thought that by increasing the number of lynch victims to 3 that I could finagle Gunny into choosing to end the private message onslaught. But he misunderstood me and chose to take the deaths and keep the messages. I still had to do something though and so I put a stop to them the next day and as a token of good faith to the village team, I told Sauron how many wolves were alive at that point. Since Sauron got killed before he could say anything, I also told Palman the same thing when he assumed the duties of seer. I knew that if I didn't stop the messages that Boltor would know who all the good roles were and the game would end rather quickly for the wolves. I also knew that there was 1 box out there which would allow a wolf to turn a villager into a werewolf - and Louis did just that when he opened his box. So I didn't want the wolves to know who everyone was. I should have just stopped the messaging and left Gunny's box alone, so if there's any ill sentiment over how that was handled then direct it at me alone. So with night 2 cancelled we moved on to day 3 - and 3 lynches.
Day 3 really surprised me. Not only had the President not been scanned yet, but noone voiced much concern over giving him free choice of whom to kill off that day. It also hurt the village when another box was opened that hid the roles of those lynched from the village but made them known to the wolves. That box was originally intended to be opened on a day when only 1 lynch was supposed to happen, but it didn't work out that way for me. I wanted the wolves to be able to hint that one of them had the role of the dead player without anyone being able to say otherwise. Louis even went so far as to invite the defenders to come forward and talk things over with him - Elite called him out on it, but again, nobody was willing to go against the flow and a wolf was allowed to choose 3 lynch victims unopposed. Not to mention that you all basically gave the wolves a free chance to link up with one another by voting for Louis...
Night 3 saw Markanite die when he handcuffed himself to IdT. The wolf pack targeted Sauron (who they knew was the Seer, thanks to Boltor having joined their group that night). Sauron finally scanned Louis (he was 2 for 2 in scanning wolves), made a night time post and died at dawn.
Day 4 saw Louis lynched, ending a reign of terror that I've never seen in any of the games I've played. His legacy lived on though, because the wolf pack was allowed to make 2 attacks that night due to him being the wolf cub, and Hakketomat - the Doppleganger - had picked Louis on day 1. So Hakk became the new wolf cub.
Night 4 Was busy. The wolves got 2 attacks and chose HS as one of their targets. HS was one of the lovers, so Gunny died as well. Gunny was the hunter, so he got to take IdT with him to the grave. The White Wolf took out DoC.
Day 5 proves that it's never a good idea to be quiet in our games. Shy Guy rarely says much, and he paid the price for it here. Also saw a wolf blown up by his box on day 5.
Night 5 - the wolves targeted Mattie, who had correctly predicted an attack earlier and thus was able to identify one of the wolves before she died.
Day 6 was another rough day. Palman paid a steep price for his role reveal. The village did take out the White Wolf, but they suffered terribly that night as a result.
Night 6 Saw the wolves kill Palman - who was left undefended. Their other target was defended. Hakk did get scanned though.
Day 7 Hakk got lynched, but distracted everyone from having any further discussions on what to do.
Night 7 saw Sweethaven and Kerg die through the double attacks granted when the new wolf cub was lynched. Tanz opened his box and became a seer/defender combo - the most powerful role I've ever seen in WW games.
Day 8 Saw the Martyr lynched.
Night 8 Parrrrtay was killed
Day 9 On day 9 Woonsocket was killed and those in the know were stunned to discover that Boltor had lied to them, he still didn't get scanned though...
Night 9 Klop was killed by a box and the remaining wolves silenced the VI - Siuts.
Day 10 Using Lamoni's double vote and Boltor's tie breaking power, the wolves lynched Echo and won the game.
Siut's box would have allowed the person opening it to force someone to change their vote, Parrrrtay's box would have given a free scan on day 10 (it changed based on day/phase)
Several things I've learned, and hopefully future hosts will learn as well:
It helps to have multiple 'villager' roles if you're going to allow role reveals and/or private messages
Even when you think you've thought of everything, you haven't
It's better to own a mistake than make things worse trying to fix it
So, I hope you all enjoyed playing this variation. There were some learning bumps, but I still think that it went pretty good overall.
I'd appreciate any feedback, positive or negative.
I also want everyone who participated to send me a vote for the game's MVP. I'll keep any comments quiet, but will post the winner's name here.
