Roughly speaking: When we look to an authority, such as government, to protect us from all the harm and risk that might befall us, we create a society where people readily surrender their freedoms to that authority. And even though the authority might be well-meaning now, there is no guarantee that it will stay that way. Also, ironically, it leads to a society of selfish egotists. Because people are conditioned to surrender any decision which might have negative consequences on others to the state. Anything which legally remains, must therefore be okay to do. Or so they believe. That is of course not true, but it seems to be deeply ingrained in people.

This is of course an abstract concept. The nuance of reality is where it gets tricky. There are valid reasons for government restrictions. It's just that I draw the line a lot earlier than democratic socialists or even social democrats do.
