Hello all—
Real life circumstances have come up that are necessitating I leave NationStates. Later next week I will log myself out, likely forever, after having played the game for a little over 7 years.
I’ve played in almost every capacity imaginable — from a newbie, to a Minister, Senator and TITO Knight, even a Chief Executive of a region, and as an exile. It’s safe to say there are very few things I have not done or positions I have not held. I’m proud of most of the things I’ve done, not so proud of others. And overall, I’m very happy about the time I’ve spent, but I must move on — real life obligations have intervened, and while I would even go so far as to say that some of my time in NS has helped define me as a person, it is time to move on.
There are two things I wanted to say—
First, I have the most profound respect for so many of you. Online games bring out the best in some and the worst in others, and XKI and other defenders are among those for whom it brings out the best. In general, my respect is hard earned, and I find it remarkable the deep level of respect which I had for dozens of Islanders. Not to negate the respect I held for so many Islanders but Paffnia, Cerb, Shizensky, Grub (Lenlyvit), and Aersoldorf have always challenged me to be the best version of myself I can be — even when it was because our interests clashed rather than concurred.
Second, the 10000 Islands is great through a combination of hard work, community, and clarity. The tireless effort of TITO Command, recruiters, buddies, and different officials build the foundation to one of the closest communities in the game. The 10000 Islands is one of the regions with the most concrete set of values — everyone knows what we stand for — for better or for worse.
With those two things said: it is hard for me to resist the opportunity to share a few closing thoughts about where we are as a region. The transfer of the Chief Executive is clearly a momentous occasion in regional history. And while throughout my time I’ve staked out some of the most controversial opinions — from foreign policy, to political transparency, to regional projects, and more — I have massive faith in Woonsocket’s leadership and the region’s resilience. I could list the many things I hope change, but I ultimately think that the region will — through an inevitable combination of its cultural elements — emerge stronger than ever before.
Two closing quotes—
“Turn thy thoughts now to the consideration of thy life, thy life as a child, as a youth, thy manhood, thy old age, for in these also every change was a death. Is this anything to fear?” —Marcus Aurelius (Meditations, Book IX)
“What a long strange trip it’s been” —The Grateful Dead in “Truckin’”
