The world is increasingly moving towards complete automation, income inequality is seemingly on the rise at a global scale and job search can sometimes feel endless, What do you think of the possibility of a Universal Basic Income?

Terrific idea but difficult to implement. The gap between rich and poor is NOT improving, as far as I can see. In the U.S. the reincarnation of Louis XVI has adopted a let them eat cake approach.

I'm skeptical it would happen in the US. The government would let people starve to death before something like that happened. Trump or no Trump.

In US we spend 20,000 on welfare programs, this is slightly less then the average cost of living of $20,194. Additionally our maze of public welfare programs can create poverty traps, forcing the poor to make the choice between taking the jobs they need to work their way out of poverty, or staying eligible for to programs they need to make ends meet now. This doesn't factor in the cost in time that people must spend , often during standard working hours, going to offices to fill out forms get interviewed and whatever other unproductive thing the system demands; instead of doing thing that will improve their lives, like working, learning new skills, getting an education or caring for their children. Given that I see basic minimum income as an excellent alternative to our current welfare systems.

Well said, Ming. The bureaucracy is mindboggling, intentionally so. It's like a Kafka novel. And that is unproductive time.

What are your thoughts on fringe democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang's proposal of $1000 a month, granted to every citizen? I'm undecided on the whole concept, but if it is implenented I think that's the way to go. Making it a right of citizenship removes any stigma from it and i think means testing etc would only weaken the central idea
Yang's proposal is based on cutting welfare programs and introducing a VAT. But his proposed $1000 isn't enough to cover basic needs in a lot of states, and adding a regressive tax system on top of that won't help.
