Hello my fellow Islanders... For those who don't know me, I'm Tuga Nation's Dragon, I'm from Portugal, and some of you already know my job in RL is to be a nurse in the ER of my region's main Hospital...
I'm here writing this on one of my few resting days in order to give you some insight of what's really going on about the COVID-19 pandemic crisis...
First things first... Don't be fool and take this very seriously! Just a few ignorant and irresponsible people are enough to exponentially increase the spreading of the disease to a whole community... That's what happened in Italy, and it's happening in Portugal as well... We didn't learned from the others' mistakes, and we will pay for it...
As I said, I'm a nurse and the situation in my hospital is already becoming chaotic... We don't have the enough resources to sustain this, and it's only the beginning... There is no adequate infrastructures, not enough human resources and not enough resources as meds, ventilators, beds or even surgical masks... I have to use the same several days in a row... The antiseptic solution is already running low as well...
We have a contingency plan working but it's just not enough...
I'm certain I will be infected (if I'm not already) by the Coronavirus, as will the majority of my colleagues... When we get sick, who will be working? I don't know, probably it will be us anyway...
Yes, about 80% of those who get infected develop mild symptoms, like flu, and some don't develop any symptoms at all... But they are still a vehicle to infect others... So we must be prepared for the fact that almost everyone will get infected... What we can do is to determine how and when we get infected... It's not the same to have 2000 new cases in one day or having those same 2000 new cases in one month... The former will must definitely cause a collapse of the Healthcare system... The latter probably not... And that's everyone's responsibility...
So what do you have to do? Basically, follow the WHO recommendations and stay informed:
Wash your hands frequently
Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.
Maintain social distancing
Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
Practice respiratory hygiene
Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority. If there is an Health Information number, call first before rushing into a hospital.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.
Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider
Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.
Any questions about the COVID-19 may be explained here: www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses
Please guys, I ask you to take this situation very seriously... Follow the recommendations I stated above and we will get through this...
Stay safe, stay at home...
Thank you...
