There are many issues and topics concerning society, etc that could be debated and discussed upon. However, some of these issues are seen as more important or critical, and worthy of more attention than others, and will often take the spotlight in events such as elections.
What makes an issue important, or alternatively, what makes an issue popular? Is it the potential impact of a decision on that issue, the amount of people it would affect, how much it is tied deeply with other topics (e.g. religion), or some other factor?

Ooh I like this question. I had to think for a good few minutes, but I think I've come to an answer!
I would say an issue becomes popular based on how many people it affects, but more importantly how quickly/obviously it will affect them.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic not only affects tons of people, but it all occurred within the span of a few months, so the difference between pre-corona and post-corona life is very noticeable. Hence why its the only thing anyone can talk about nowadays.
In contrast something like climate change is also impacting or will impact billions of people. But for a long time, the impact of climate change wasn't very obvious, and it didn't have an immediate impact of most people's lives. Now, more people are being directly affected by it (through worsened natural disasters for example), so its becoming a much more popular and prominent issue. On that note: Happy Earth Day y'all!
So yeah, that's my two cents.
