Someone asked a question about defenders (mostly TITO and TGW) using counter-invasion as a tactic and why its been used in the past, so I ended up writing a larger post on TITO's history of counter-invasion. I found a lot of sources on our forum and NS forum and decided to post it on here to see if anyone had content suggestions or feedback if I keep working on it, though it's far from perfect.
Let me know what you think!
While it’s not entirely clear how long counter-invasion has been apart of TITO’s mission statement, it’s most certainly been apart of its history since the beginning. TITO was originally founded as a RP military alliance that turned into a real game military following the Empire of Power (EoP) invasion of XKI in July of 2003, with XKI’s founder being the Commander in Chief for TITO (Grub at the time). R/D was more high stakes with raiders being referred to as ‘region crashers’ and ‘invaders’ as the end result was typically the complete destruction of the region occupied with refounding. As a result, TITO became determined to thwart EoP for the attempted destruction and disrupted their raiding activity as much as possible. There's no public record on the policy of counter-invasion at the time, but Grub comments on their condemnation attempt in 2009 that there was a conscious decision made to infiltrate EoP and bring it down from within (1). It’s not a ‘destruction’ per se as EoP collapsed into inactivity, and only then was EoP refounded in October 2004 as clarified by Ananke on the same thread (2). The general ‘why’ was that EoP deserved it, which Grub emphasized strongly, for their attempted destruction of XKI and other regions–retribution in full. In a sense, that’s the general theme for any counter invasions in the future of TITO: retribution for destruction caused by raiders. It was very much a ‘play to win’ mentality as well, as the argument was raiders can’t raid if they get destroyed thus completely removing the threat at the root. Empire of Power can still be found here.
So if we use EoP as precedent, TITO goes on to have a steady history of counter-invasion, with the next instance involving the DEN in December 2004. At one point in April of 2004, Grub’s nation was deleted by mods from a spamming report allegedly from DEN’s founder Tommy Franks, and Grub’s nation was restored quickly after (3). There's no love lost between the two regions and DEN becomes the primary focus of TITO activity–there’s a lot of old XKI meme threads with “How long will it take DEN to lose x region”. In December, DEN’s founder Tommy Franks gets deleted (one post says for flaming and racist comments) and TITO moves to occupy the region. There are a couple of forum posts that note some disapproval from other defender organizations and some disagreement from TITO members at the time on the occupation. Ananke notes that ADN didn’t do counter invasions at the time, but the higher-ups were fine with it along with a few other organizations (4). TITO doesn’t hold the DEN and turns the region back over, but–similar to EoP–DEN was infiltrated and collapses into inactivity with a few weaker iterations (5).
Marijuana Militia (MM) would be the next example in 2007 with a declaration of war that resulted in Marijuana Militia’s annexation in 2008 (see the region here). It’s again a history of animosity which Anime Daisuki describes their attempts to thwart TITO missions, deface a coast-watching thread, insulting telegrams, attempted intel networks, etc, and echoes the thought that ‘[MM] should have seen it coming’ due to the retribution was earned through raiding (6). Unlike past counter-invasions, MM faced significant controversy as the former version of the FRA deployed to defend against TITO after gaining prior warning of the occupation through Sedgistan's trusted access to the TITO barracks. Relations between the two defending organizations strained heavily, despite the FRA Assembly motioning to prevent attempted liberations of MM (7). Nevertheless, MM would be annexed in 2008 as previously mentioned, and the resulting fallout would have a significant impact on the future (or lack thereof) between the FRA and TITO.
This is all really long context and history to say counter invasions are part of TITO and are integrated as part of the mission statement. The most recent example would be the raid of LWU which generated hosts of meme content for either side, but even then was done with the knowledge that the founder would return and be short-lived. The need for counter-invasions and ‘why’ reason has certainly changed over time; R/D is less high stakes than it used to be so there’s less incentive and opportunity to counter invade, but that’s not to say it will never happen again in the future should it fit TITO's interests (8).
