As heats continue to rise and summers get to be more and more extreme, many people on the Islands decided that it's cooler underground. And by saying cool, I mean in tune with the cultural zeitgeist. Hep, man. It greatly increases living space, and there are a number of interesting furniture items that have been developed for subterranean dwellers. There is a great reduction in outside noise down below. It saves on cooling bills, mostly because it's cool. And by saying cool, I mean temperature-wise. Plus the underground dwellings can double as survival spaces for the coming apocalypse.
Eventually, as the number of underground homes has multiplied, cities are developing underground with trade, entertainment, and restaurants and the like. These cities naturally flourish as more and more people go down under. And by saying down under, I mean under the ground. Even those living down under built these buried homes as well. And by saying down under, I mean Australians. Or Aussies. Or Ozzies, or whatever the proper name is. It's easy to get confused.
