Quite a while ago, the third of June. I was just getting ready for my dance event a few days later, and relaxing after finishing my exams

Mama said to me, Child, what's happened to your appetite? I've been cooking all morning and you haven't touched a single bite!

Now all that meat and no potatoes? Just ain't right, like green tomatoes.

He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge, and her and Billy Joe was throwin' somethin' off the Tallahatchee Bridge.

That was insensitive. Your mother might not be the best cook, but they should have at least looked like they enjoyed the meal, rather than saying "We have to run" and taking the food with them to throw away. Plus, folks shouldn't be polluting the Tallahatchee River with her burnt offerings.

Seems like nothin' ever come to no good up on Choctaw Ridge. And now you tell me Billy Joe has jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge.

I've been through Mississippi, though. Three times. Hitchhiking as a young lad.

It took me three days to hitchhike from Saginaw, I've come to look for America.

I've been to Saginaw,too, but not hitchhiking. I have hitched to Ann Arbor, though, in the snow.

Michigan seems like a dream to me now.

I spent a month in Upper Michigan one day.

[Louisistan]

And the lights all went down in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is one place I have seen.

It's one place I'VE seen, and this time I'm not just quoting a song, it's actually true. I've been to Boston, you know.

We New Yorkers feel your pain.

I've also been to New York.
