I think its all bad for you. I've seen too many of my friends complain of migraine headaches, dizziness etc all the while downing liters and liters of diet coke. There not exactly proof but it looks like it causes cancer too or can.
So what do you think? Am I just being paranoid? Or is there some truth to this article?

well the thing is artificial sweeteners, like sugar was not meant to be consumed in large quantities. moderation, ya? liters and liters of something is gonna cause all kindsa badness to happen real quick.
so... if I can just take apart the one sentence that's bugging me in this opening statement,
I've seen too many of my friends complain of migraine headaches, dizziness etc all the while downing liters and liters of diet coke.
a) is splenda now in diet coke? b) is it the artificial sweetener, the carbonated water or the "liters & liters" that's causing the symptoms? c) did your friends have the symptoms prior to taking artificially sweetened drinks?
I think we need a (private) doctor to weigh in here...

No, they didn't have the symptoms before consuming vast amounts of diet drinks. lol! Here's an example, one of the gentlemen I work with was having headaches every morning and every morning he was drinking a twelve oz diet coke for breakfast. His doctor told him to cut out the diet coke from his diet and he switched to Orange Juice. He never has headaches anymore.
No they aren't putting Splenda in diet drinks yet, that's aspartame. Aspartame turns into formaldehyde when it mixes with the chemicals in your body so basically you're preserving yourself every time you consume products with aspartame in them.
I guess I'm just curious what people think the benefits of artificial sweeteners are besides the weight loss factor.

As a brief aside, Splenda does have a very beneficial attribute. That is, it dissolves in cold water. Because I am a born and raised Southerner I have a condition known as sweetteaitisosis. If I do not imbibe sweet tea at least once a die I will actually die. Should I travel north, which I have done a couple times, I can't get sweet tea when I go out to eat. With Splenda I can actually make it right there at the table. Real sugar just sinks to the bottom of the glass so only the last two inches is sweet. Splenda is a wonderful help when it comes to averting my premature demise.
There are studies all over the place, and it's hard to pin point who did which ones right and which aren't purposefully skewed etc... but my experience is:
My wife found several studies that showed you lost no weight with diet drinks and it could in fact cause more weight gain. She switched from diet to regular to see what would happen. Drinking the same quantity she lost some weight and was shocked at how much better she felt - especially in the mornings. Later she cut back how much she was drinking which she had tried repeatedly when drinking diet and couldn't do.
So my friend decided to try too and had had a similar experience. He maintained his weight and felt better and then about 2 months later he quit drinking soda almost completely which he hadn't been able to bring himself to do before.
As for myself, I can't stand the cow dung aftertaste that "you get used to eventually"... so I never touch the nasty stuff.
Very unscientific, and a rather small sample size =P
When I order tea at a restaurant, I take a packet of each color... white for real sugar, yellow for Splenda, pink for NutraSweet, and blue for the Equal.
