Here I will tell all about how Ulgania is run, maintained, and how it is a shining star in it's region.
Economy
So here's my thing. My economy is based on the rotation of several things, and it's very centralized. The market economy is loosely based on the consumer, and is constantly a victim of supply and demand.
To start, the Uclrid plains in the south, of which the Serpin and Tanzir rivers flow though. Their yearly floods enrich the soil profusely, and heavy irrigation keep the otherwise dry plains suitable for grain production. This heavy irrigation comes at a price, and is mostly paid through a 10% tax on all grain bought in bulk, which while inflates the individual consumer price, also keeps the grain of very high quality. The grain market is only partially government controlled, with several individual companies harvesting/distributing it all. The govt. controlled portion is mostly involved with getting food to the poor/needy, and in doing so they take off the tax (really, they'd be paying themselves). Distribution of the grain among the corporate sector is largely effected by population and transportation costs.
The Furniture Restoration market is the largest we have. As unlikely as it sounds, we take in furniture from all over, from simple chairs with damaged legs, to the elaborately decorated styles of Mienish carvings in the furniture of the royalty (even though they have no real power anymore, they are still important symbols of persuasion, and hold a lot of political influence). The economic power of the FR industry allows it to spread it's benevolent tentacles into the timber industry, manufacturing industries, and employs thousands. The privately owned companies that control it all are carefully watched by the government, seeing as these companies weald so much economic power.
Resources such as timber, stone, gold, iron, etc...are relatively common, especially in the mountain ranges where the forests are dense and the minerals exceptionally easy to come by. Some vital resources are close to the borders, so they are guarded by the military. Military outposts near the border are not meant to be aggressive moves, just as safe-guarding measures.
The manufacturing part of the economy isn’t so much relegated as much as it’s located by the govt. so as to not disturb the civilian populations. As opposed to having the manufacturing in the cities, it is centralized along the Paj’isk plateau. The plateau is in the center part of the country, mostly for convenience, resources can get there easily and products/arms can be transported easily, all along the extensive network of roads in the country. It’s also an added benefit to have it located in the center of the country because it can be defended easily, as it’s on the plateau, and provide for the army too.
A militarily oriented history
Ulgania’s military prowess has been tested more than once over the past millennia. From the Terrel Fen invasions during the dark period, to the expeditions overseas to fight in the Fician Wars alongside the Ficians as they not only pushed the Korelens out of their lands, but crushed the mighty empire that they had built up with massive wars and endless espionage. They also helped to moderate and rebuild many nations in the power-vacuum that ensued. Spreading Ulganian culture and propaganda as they went, the militaries actions also increased trade in their nation, and established Ulgania as a prosperous and wealthy nation for many centuries to come.
In the past 750 years though, successive invasions and a bloody coup that over through the monarchy destroyed that wealth and slightly dissolved the military, which in the end gave cause to an even larger uprising when those in the military realized what was happening rallied, and seized power from the despot that was ruling. The despot, Srolim the Just (as his in his territory were forced to call him) sent his forces loyal to him against the Ulganian Nationalist Armed Forces, the name the army had given themselves. The Nationalists were overjoyed when Srolim’s forces were overwhelmed near the industrial Mecca of Masdir-Ulgith, deep in the heart of the Paj’isk plateau. Seeing that his biggest manufacturing city had fallen, Srolim immediately cut supplies to the plateau, and tried to wait out the armies supplies stores, but was quickly subdued when the UNAF laid siege to the capitol city of Serpentine. After Serpentine fell, and Srolim captured, the Despot’s forces quietly surrendered, and a volunteer democracy was easily and eagerly put in place. The Temporary High Council put through sweeping reforms, and the army was once again kept standing. The following 150 years was a time of peace and rebuilding, since so much of the country had been ravaged by the civil war.
Trade soon began to come back to the land, after their old allies saw that the country was back, and in firm control of the people, and not a despot.
The military is made up of several different kinds of legions. The basic infantry legion is comprised of 5000 men, and can be shifted for various threats. It can be used as a basic line of interlocked shields to deflect arrows and spears and other projectiles, and can integrate a phalanx type of formation for cavalry/infantry charges. These legions often moved in groups of 5 or ten legions. The heavy legion will generally consist of infantry and cavalry, plus whatever may be needed for siege equipment (if necessary). This legion can usually consist of 9000 men, with cavalry and infantry at a 1:2 ratio.
In more recent times, the Ulganian military has taken to a more traditional ‘division’ structuring. Divisions consist of 35,000 men, and there are heavy, infantry, air, and naval divisions. As Ulgania has no specified navy, the army takes to the seas readily.
At the present, Ulgania has a limited military as they are adjusting to the move to 10,000 Islands. Countless thousands have died in the upheaval from the North Pacific. Thankfully, their strong and intact economy, along with multitudes of willing and able people are filling up the military quickly, and hope to be active again in a but a few weeks time.
