The democratic republic of freethinking humanists is exactly that - a haven for people persecuted for their [lack of] beliefs. They chose a deserted tropical island to set up their republic because everybody likes beaches and a tan. Its really too young to have any kind of history.
The republic is ruled by an elected parliament, which in turn appoints a prime minister to run the bureaucracy. Unfortunately the prime minister usually has free reign over parliament and the government until his party loses its majority and the prime minister loses the confidence vote.
Education and healthcare are free for all who want it and voting and military service are voluntary. Our energy infrastructure is completely renewable, even though some of our companies export coal, oil and uranium. On the whole the country is pretty classically liberal and its design aesthetic is modernist/minimalist (think ikea meets an apple store).
