In the 400 m dash and 4x400 m relay at the Olympics, South African runner and double amputee Oscar Pistorius will compete. He's the first disabled athlete to compete in the Olympics, not just the Paralympics. Some say his artificial legs, which have given him the nickname "Blade Runner" give him an advantage; the Olympics let him compete, though, and said it was fair. I think he should be given a fair shot like everyone else. What do you guys think?
I don't think his legs gave him any advantage I mean he made it to the semifinals and then only ran in the final of the 4x400 for south africa. However he is an amazing example of what the human spirit can do.
Athletes should be able to enter with any bodily manipulation (including drugs and prosthesis) that they wish, as long as it is determined by an independent and professional body that they do not give them a significant (in the scientific sense) advantage over able bodied athletes.
In a television interview Oscar explain the process of scientific testing that was done on his "blades". It was shown that he has an disadvantage compared to able athletes. Apart from the "blades" is was also shown that having no lower legs, which results in him having less blood in his body to carry oxygen as a disadvantage compared to able athletes.
Will post the link when I tracked it down for all to see.
