Republican Military Coup 1953 IC
Things changed for Covolostan in the early 1950's. A slumping economy and a wave of political ideology that swept the country marked the beginning of the end for the Constitutional Congress, the legislative body at the time full of business owners and aristocrats. After many protests and pressure by the people, the Covolostan monarchy disbanded The Congress and ordered fresh elections.
The 1953 Congrestional elections showed votes from the right to the left. However, ideology ran so deep that a coalition government proved impossible. This political deadlock and growing angry to the rich and royal would allow a Covolo general named Ziot Menjivar a chance to clam power. In the January snow of 1954, General Menjivar's 4th Royal Army, with the help of 3 other generals, stormed both the Congress Hall and The Royal Palace, arrest the congressmen and placed the royal family under house arrest.
General Menjivar gave a national address to the people from the Royal Palace, stated the endless years of aristocratic oppression was over, claimed the removal of the Covolo royal family and announced January 15th the creation of the new Covolostan Republic.
With his coup a success, General Menjivar named himself Commander & Chief of Covolostan. He created The Chief Militray Council to help oversee Covolostan's re-deriction.
The Covolostan Civil War 1954-1963 IC
General Menjivar's coup didn't help stem the tide of ideological opposition. While he and his military had the support of many nationalists and republicans, many groups, mainly loyalist to the monarchy and communists, openly challenged his authority.
General Menjivar was determine to stomp out any opposition to his republic. He first ordered mass arrests of any opposition group he deemed a 'danger to the people.' every town & village was placed under curfew. In retaliation, opposition lead mass protests. Loyalists were beginning to take up arms to re-establish the monarchy.
A loyalist lead protest in the city of Gin Toka ended with newly formed Republican Army opening fire on the crowd, killing over 30. This event would spark a civil war that would last 9 years. Republican soldiers spread out across the country to locate and depose off any opposition. Many street battles occurred throughout the bigger cites, with many civilian casualties by both sides. However, The Military Council spins national information so well that most are convened these innocent people are being killed by opposition groups alone.
By 1961, General Menjivar's Republican group represented over 70% of Covolostan's population. Volunteer militias formed and began eliminated loyalist and communist groups, be it arrest or death. Some with enough money flee the country. By the summer of 1963, the civil war had cost under 200,000 lives.
The First Myafola Conflict 1968- 1971 IC
The civil war helped mask one of the biggest problems of Covolostan at the time, the economy. General Menjivar and the Military Council had kept Covolostan afloat by the raiding of royal homes and the formation of labor camps in the southern Tesa Mountains during the civil war. However, it was mainly to sustain the military. Now with no conflict, the economy was sinking. General Menjivar used this as an excuse to invade a small, neighboring country called Myafola. Myafola shared a broader with Covolostan along the Tesa Mountains and ending and The East Gala Sea. Myafola is also rich in mineral and oil deposits.
Covolostan Air Force units attacked Myafo military and air bases on October 28 1968. This was followed by an invading force of 42,000 Republican troopers. However, the Myafo military, outnumbered & lacking in technology, held a heavy defense around many major cities and strategic points for the 3 year conflict. The only major objective captured and held during the conflict was the Myafo side of the Tesa Mountains.
The Covolostan Republican Army retreated from Myafola in 1971, 617 Covolo soldiers lost their lives. Over 4,000 Myafos lost their lives.
While the mineral rich Tesa Mountains were taken, it didn't help the Covolo economic situation. The Myafola Conflict had increased arms production, but other industries had sunk. The banking sector collapsed, driving food prices up. By 1972, a large famine rolled through Covolostan and would last for 6 years.
General Ziot Menjivar dies 1974 after 20 years in power. Role of Commander & Chief of Covolostan was handed to his oldest son, General Thaddeus Menjivar.
The Second Myafola Conflict 1989-1999 IC
Things had corrected by 1978. Food production had increased & a reformed national mining system was enacted after gold and silver had been discovered in the Tesa Mountians. General Thaddeus Menjivar instituted economic policies that opened large-scale, state-run workhouses and an increase in medicine & technology.
As the military rose with Covolostan's economy, General Thaddeus Menjivar wanted to exercise his new military might. Using his him & his father's cult of personality, he persuades the people to back a second conflict with Myafola.
Covolostan STO operatives infiltrate Myafola's capital Yayakoya and assassinates the Myafo president on June 18, 1989. An invasion force on 66,000 marches on Myafola, with more effective use of air force and the use naval bombardment from the East Gala Sea. This war would last 11 years, until the fall of Yayakoya in 1999. Myafola becomes a state of Covolostan in 2000. Total lives loss in the conflict would be 23,000.
Oil revenue from Myafola boosted the Covolostan economy, along with their territory. General Thaddeus Menjivar spent his final years increasing Covolostan's military presences in Myafola, increasing the military's size and beginning Covolostan's entry into the international marketplace. General Thaddeus Menjivar stepped down as C&C on 2014 after 40 years of rule, due to age and health issues. Lucien Menjivar, oldest son of General Thaddeus Menjivar becomes C&C of Covolostan in 2015 IC.
Lucien Menjivar acted more like a politician then a military man. In 2017, he lighted control over national information and had begun work on Covolostan's diplomacy. However, problem have been brewing in Myafola by The Q'lita, Myafo freedom fighters who want separation from Covolostan.
(OOc: Still working on it. Tell me what you think.)
