Part of the history of my NationState is that it was formed partly out of an exodus from the originating country. One of the reasons for the exodus was that foreign ethnicities did not intermarry and was adamant in using only their culture. Eventually, the population of the foreign ethnic overtook the native ones and replaced the native culture completely. Hence, the exodus.
So, my questions are would this be ethical if it (cultural replacement) happen today?
What role do you think foreigners (whether same ethnicity or not) should have when it comes to the native culture?
Personally, I think that there should be an open mind to foreign cultures when it comes to necessities, but still preserving the distinctness of the native culture, especially when that culture has already an proper, established system for a particular subject. I love diversity and I believe humans should be just as diverse as Earth is.
One example would be cultural dances. These are something that I think shouldn't be replaced and should be preserved because it partly defines the history of the culture.
But there are things that should be replaced. For example, child labor. A country could claim that it was tradition for them to put children into hard labor. But, say a foreigner whose culture did not permit child labor brought this to the country. For me it would be alright to change that part of the culture not only because of the welfare of the child, but also because the child would have stunted growth and development if strenuous labor was introduced early on. Additionally, proper development would bring more labor into the country.
As for the preservation, I believe that governments or the common people should not be so strict in linking tradition with ethnicity, but rather also present immigrants that they could be part of it.
How about you?
