Are politicians that cheat on their wife and show a lack of judgment in doing so more so than others: Weiner sexted pictures of his...weiner, Petreaus gave security clearances to Paula Broadwell that she normally should not have had, Spitzer hired prostitutes (illegal in NY) while in office--as compared to Sanford, for instance, who kept it mainly under the table- be given a second chance? Why or why not? nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/07/26/19696739-is-weiner-part-of-a-war-on-women-emilys-list-says-no?lite

Normally, I believe that people should be forgiven, but politicians (in theory) should be setting examples for the populace. Apparently, Spitzer and Weiner have failed.

They are people just like you and me. I choose not to judge them based on their home and sex life but rather on their ability to do their jobs and serve their communities. Weiner was an excellent congressman and a real defender of democratic party values, so what he sexts people? I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I never did it. I've never paid for sex, but I've also done things that I'm less than proud of in the name of sex. I'm not going to judge them, because they are only human. I don't vote for them so they can set an example, I vote for them to promote policies that I'm supportive of and to lead. JFK was a notorious womanizer; that does not mean that he was not competent enough to lead the free world during a time of tremendous turmoil.
The only people who should be looked down upon (that you mentioned) are not even in the poll. Petreaus could have compromised our national security with his actions and Sandford used public money to go visit his mistress while he was in office. And society agreed to give Sandford a second chance, well at least the people of South Carolina did. So why aren't New York liberals entitled to the same amount of forgiveness?

I think that what they did was inexcusable. While I'm a fervent liberal who believes that people should usually be given a second chance, but NOT in politics. Like Ducky said, they set a precedent and should be held to that.

I have relatives that lived in NY... Weiner was the first Democratic congressman in like 40 years to be elected to their district... see how that turns out.

The main problem I have with Spitzer is not his sex (prostitute) scandal, which was illegal. It was the way in which he ran his trial by media of Wall Street, which led to my dad losing his job. Additionally, of all the people that pled guilty or were put on trial, the judge threw each and every one of them out. The reason was something along the lines of "This is the worst example of attorney general malfeasance I can remember."
I think politicians getting fired is not same than judging them. It's not only question about freedom of a politician but also about freedom of society. If the majority wants take them back - ok, that's democracy. So why not protecting all people against employers limiting life of employees. Of course politicians are object for public emotions in media. The imago belongs to the job. Besides often politicians have good possibilities to get new other job.

People should be forgiven. Public servants, however, are supposed to be the best and brightest. The fact that most of the country is run by greedy bastards and perverts doesn't give any one of them an excuse, not when they're responsible for the lives and wellbeing of thousands or millions of people.
