FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE FIRST CONFERENCE ON ISLAND ECONOMIC RESILIENCY, 27 AUG 2014
Contributions received from members representing Scow Creek, the Algonquian Nations, Nouvel Acadie, the Cymric Corporate Authority, the Ságípónáq Nation, the State of Móntóq, and Icelandia.
Scow Creek Strengths:
Healthy maritime resources and vibrant fishing/shellfishing industry Strong Marine industrial, Brewing, and Hay production sectors Advanced micro-level solar energy generation Effective Coast Guard and defense operations; security alliances Pristine ocean beaches Quality Technical School
Scow Creek Weaknesses:
Low world seafood prices Near-crippling over-reliance on imports, esp. food (fruits & vegetables, poultry, meat, dairy and grains) and textiles. Practical non-existence of arable land Unresolved issue of the dumping of thousands of tons of illegal dredge spoils Lack of ground transportation for access to national attractions Poor institutional-level, large-scale energy production No broad-based trade arrangements
Recommendations:
1. Formation of a Seafood Cooperative or Board to counter low world prices, promote markets, pool resources, and create a positive brand image.
2. Use of dredge spoils to create arable land on one of the sedges
3.Long-Term trade deals with agricultural nations for bulk purchase of food and textiles.
4. Development of a National Solar Farm for institutional energy use
5. Coordinated marketing of established products (brewing, beach plums, seafood)
6. Development of road networks in more highly developed western areas of the nation
