My thoughts on this are that being a member of TITO is a privilege. As Field Commander of TITO I want nations that want to defend and that in itself is a reward. To me it would reduce what we do. We defend because it is the right thing to do with no expectation of reward / recognition. Payment in my opinion would cheapen not only what we do now but nations that came before us. We do it because we can, should, and want to. Not because we are paid to do it.

I remember reading somewhere that people will donate more blood purely because of altruistic incentives than if there was a reward at the other end. This is why it's often voluntary to donate blood.

This. TITO is a great organisation because we're all passionate about defending, and providing more incentive than that shouldn't be necessary.

There is a certain prestige offered to members of TITO. Despite what some raider propaganda or comments from not-so-friendly defenders might suggest, TITO troops have always maintained a reputation of being the most disciplined, well trained, and honorable defenders in the field for over 10 years. To have served an honorable career with TITO is a badge that the owner will carry with him anywhere in NS.
TITO membership, including the war records, the badges, the pins, and the medals, counts as its own form of currency. At least that's what I've always believed.
The best thing about UDP jokes is that I don’t care if you get them or not.
I'm with Wordy on this one. The idea of getting paid is nice, but the idea of doing it for the sake of doing it is even nicer both for the people who volunteer, and for those who are wanting volunteers.
The problem with paying is if it did happen, people will complain about the littlest things: They didn't get their pay for a mission, what they earned wasn't enough, blah blah blah. Like it was mentioned earlier, turning it into a paying position is cheapening it enough already when it's already quite a privilege and honor to be a part of TITO. But the issues that would arise (why aren't recruiters getting paid too? Do TITO members deserve more pay than recruiters? Etc...) would cheapen it even more to where people would completely lose the idea of what TITO even stands for.
So I'm actually more comfortable with it being a volunteer thing. That way it keeps those who only do it because they want something out of it...well, out of it, and keeps it open to those who want to join simply because they want to be a part of something unique and amazing.
That's a huge can of worms to open. What's the payscale? By the week, month, year? By the hour actively spent in TITO work? By the mission? By the successful mission? How much per? Flat rate for everyone? Or do Knights get more than members, and Command members more than Knights? And what about a less active Knight, like me, versus a very active Knight, like 13CGS? Malecia already has to update the jacket of every single TITO member that serves on a given mission. Imagine if he had to disburse a payment, too. His job becomes twice as hard. Now imagine that you settle on something other than "X tacos per mission for all members!"
And for what? What's the use of opening that can? So TITOs can earn a few tacos? At least, I'm assuming tacos, because if you're talking hard cash, the problems are so obvious as not to merit listing. Nobody is going to enlist in or remain in TITO for a salary in imaginary internet dollars. Your active TITOs are going to be motivated by the same thing that motivates current TITOs. It won't help with recruitment or retention, because who is going to go to all the effort defending involves, for tacos?
I'm against it. Paying TITO members would be little better than continuing to ask for volunteer effort, and would significantly increase the workload on the brass, who would still essentially be volunteers.

I'm in TITO because I wanted to volunteer to help. I never wanted monetary compensation for any work or mission I did. Nothing is better than the satisfaction of a well organized defence that leaves the natives happy.
The people in TITO are not looking for pay, they are motivated by a sense of Justice for victims, protection of the innocent and support for those that request assistance.
