Welcome to the first article of "The Islands Gazette"! I know this article won't be that huge but this is just a teaser to show that we, the staff of TIG are dedicated to serving the wonderful islanders of 10KI. For today we have a small interview by Lower Columbia, a recap of previous events on our trademark "Sun-Baked Calendar" and a few jokes and a few quotes. I hope you enjoy!!

A trip into the life and lies of Lower Columbia. By: Flemingisa

We have here today with us Lower Columbia who graciously agreed to be interviewed for the inaugural paper, we only asked a few questions but expect more in the future.

How long have you been playing NationStates? How much of that time have you spent in 10KI?
I've played NS on and off since some time in 2003, when I founded my first nation, Automastan. LC is my second nation; I started it in late 2006 and revived it in (I think) 2008 or '09, and have played it ever since. My time in 10000 Islands has been considerably shorter; I moved here in October 2014.
What was your impression of 10KI when you moved here?
My first impressions of 10KI were formed even before I moved here. I can remember the days when Ananke II was delegate and wielded her enormous voting power in the WA to great effect, back when I resided in other regions. It was truly impressive that one delegate could be that influential, and I hope to see either Aerso or another 10KI delegate surpass that high-water mark in the future. However, what really drew me to the region in the first place was its commitment to the defender cause. When I moved here, I had grown tired of my region's rather ambivalent stance on gameplay, and I wanted to be part of a solid defender-oriented region. TITO's reputation in gameplay is legendary, so 10KI seemed like the best fit for me.
What is your favorite part of the forums?
Well, I certainly spend a lot of time in Taco Island. It's easy to lose track of time while spamming. However, my favorite subboard for the past four months has been the Council of Nine forum. It's been a great pleasure for me to help shape regional policy and legislation as a senator.
What one part of 10KI do you think you can improve the most?
At the moment, there isn't anything that I think needs serious improvement. However, I'd still like to fulfill my campaign promise of creating a thematic index of past Co9 decisions, so that interested Islanders can more easily find out what legislation there is on a particular subject.
How did you come up with your nation name?
It has to do with the country's geography: its original territory (according to the history I wrote, which is available in my factbook) lies along the lower stretch of the Columbia River. Today, the country includes the entire Columbia River watershed, but the name has stayed the same.

Just a few tips. Our forums let you format to make things prettier and more organised. Using bold or underline can help split each section of the newspaper, as can changing the size. Maybe even a logo to head the newspaper would be a good idea too, there are quite a few graphic designers around the Islands that would probably be willing (although may ask for a few tacos ).

I took the liberty of reformatting it further just so you can take a look. A lot of NS newspapers use a similar formatting to the below. Also, I know it's difficult for you to do a lot of formatting work on a phone. Feel free to copy and paste and edit the below.

FINDING OUR UTOPIA? AN INTERVIEW WITH AIPUTO RUO

Flemingisa-Hi there! This is Flemingisa here with Aipotu Ruo and we're going to be interviewing him for our "Inside the Islands" Edition!

Flemingisa-Now Aipotu Ruo, first question. What made you join NS? What made you join Ten Thousand Islands?

Aiputo Ruo-NationStates simply seemed interesting. After finding the website once, it seemed like a fun thing to do, and a good use of free time, being exposed to new ideas, political or otherwise, and answering various issues has provoked numerous interesting thoughts.

Flemingisa-What was your first impression of the islands when you joined?

Aiputo Ruo-The 10KI had sent a recruitment telegram when I first went on NS, and it seemed interesting, so I put the region into my dossier. After spending some time in some of the other regions that had initially sent out telegrams to Aipotu Ruo, they no longer seemed very appealing, so I left and went here. I'm rather glad to have done so, I might add.

Flemingisa-Are you apart of the forum? And if not then why not?

Aiputo Ruo-I was not really sure what to expect when coming in, but the Regional Message Board proved to be very active when I joined, with numerous different thoughts coming and going in a sort of churning, rapid river of discussion. There is a wide diversity in the thoughts and personalities of the members of the region, and that makes time here consistently active and surprising.

Flemingisa-Where did the name Aiputo Ruo come from?

Aiputo Ruo-The name, "Aipotu Ruo," comes from the words, "Our Utopia," spelled backwards, with "Our" being a possessive word for a group of people, and "Utopia" being a term, coined by the Englishman Thomas More, which literally translates from Greek to English as "No Place" but is more often thought of as being "Ideal Society." So "Aipotu Ruo," or "Our Utopia" would be the society that was ideal and belonged to each individual within it, though the nation has not always lived up to that standard in practice.

Flemingisa-Finally, what is your favorite part of the islands?

Aiputo Ruo-While this has already been touched upon, the various personalities, ideologies, and overall diversity of thought make the Islands a beautiful place where one can always learn new things and hear different thoughts. Also, the muffins and tacos are fun to discuss. The 10KI is also very welcoming to plenty of new nations and a great environment for ideas and discussion.

A MYSTERIOUS ONE... A PERSON HIDING IN THE SHADOWS OF TEN THOUSAND ISLANDS, AN INTERVIEW WITH RENISIA

Flemingisa-Hi there! This is Flemingisa here with Renisia and we're going to be interviewing them tonight!
Now Renisia, first question. What made you join NS? What made you join Ten Thousand Islands?

Renisia-I was considering to apply for membership in The East Pacific when i first joined NS. Since i was new back then, i thought that i need to read the whole constitution of TEP and understand it. So instead, i decided to look for another region, through the recruitment TGs.
10000 Islands is the one i chose, because i thought it was simpler region, but a better choice than the others. So i joined.

Flemingisa-What was your first impression of the islands when you joined?

Renisia-My first impression before i joined was, umm, kinda like "meh". It was mainly because Cerb's (autocerb) flag that didn't look like a RL nation flag at all, and the fact that 10000 Islands doesn't sound like a RL region at all, compared to the feeder regions. As i stayed longer here and got the grasp of how things work in NS, i found out that i was very wrong.

Flemingisa-Are you apart of the forum? And if not then why not?

Renisia
If you mean the NS forum, no i am not. Because i don't think i have something in interest there.
However, i am apart of XKI's offsite forum, although not very active nowadays.

Flemingisa-Where did the Name Renisia come from?

Renisia-
It came when i was building a ship for an old game called Battleships Forever. I named it "Renis" (such a suggestive name). Then i found another game called Starsector. I tried to make a mod there, and name it "The Renis Imperium". My nation's name and flag here is based on that mod i made.

Flemingisa-Finally, what is your favorite part of the islands?

Renisia-
My favorite thing about the Islands is it's friendly community. They made me feel very welcome here. Also, the amount of things you can do in this region and it's offsite forum.

Flemingisa-Hi there! This is Flemingisa here with Anollasia and we're going to be interviewing him for our "Inside the Islands" Edition!
Now Anollasia, first question.
What made you join NS? What made you join Ten Thousand Islands?

Anollasia-I joined NS after Googling games where you create countries, because I always liked creating imaginary countries in my head when I was little. It was a long time ago, but I recall joining 10000 Islands because it looked nicer than the region I was founded in.

Flemingisa-What was your first impression of the islands when you joined?

Anollasia-My first impression of the Islands was that it's nice, warm blooded and friendly.

Flemingisa-Are you apart of the forum? And if not then why not?

Anollaisa- I do have a forum account on the regional forums, but I'm not active. One reason is because it lags for me. Another is because I find it too inactive. I also don't like the forum layout that much.

Flemingisa-Where did the Name Anollasia come from?

Anollasia-Anollasia is a completely random name. It's the name of one of the countries I made up when I was little, along with "Lantia". I was actually going to use Lantia, but it was already used, apparently.

Flemingisa-Finally, what is your favorite part of the islands?

Anollasia- I like how friendly most Islanders are. You just don't see this in other regions.

Flemingisa- Final question of the night. Rumors have traveled saying you have been kidnapped and replaced by someone who turned your nation from a pacifist start to a totalitarian state! Are these rumors true?

Anollasia-6. I only changed my nation for IC purposes. I wanted to try something different, something that is totally different from what I believe in. I'm still the same user. I'll return to the usual nation soon.

Now AquilaJordyn, first question.

What made you join NS? What made you join Ten Thousand Islands?

AquilaJordyn-My brother was playing nationstates for history class (no longer active), and I love politics and history, so a political role-play game was right up my alley. As for 10k, I was wired a telegram from “woot woot woot, I feel free of cerb” I started out in the south pacific, but 10,000 sounded like a nice place, and would fit my theme of a tourist destination. The only other recruitment letter I got was from the black riders, and I’m not a fan of invading.

Flemingisa-What was your first impression of the islands when you joined?

AquilaJordyn-2.First impression: To be honest, I was surprised I didn't find a way to get banned the first week. Everyone has been so friendly, I can’t imagine life anywhere else, I actually kept on wanting to go home while deployed to Lazarus, and took the first opportunity to do so, I felt this weird sensation we call “home sick”

Flemingisa-Are you apart of the forum? And if not then why not?

AquilaJordyn-I am a part of the forums, but I haven’t been very active at all, though I’m starting up again. I have been content to just chat in rmb, but I’d like to get more involved in the islands day to day affairs

Flemingisa-Where did the Name AquilaJordyn come from?

AquilaJordyn-My name? *blushes*. I take Latin class, and My Latin name is Aquila, which means “the eagle” which is also the inspiration for my national animal. As for the second part of my name, Jordyn…That is the name of one of my best friend and the girl I have a crush on, she is in my class. She is the inspiration for my motto “Ad Astra” her Latin name is Stella, which means, “the star” essentially I’m a little awkward hopeless romantic

Flemingisa- What is your Favorite Part about the islands?

AquilaJordyn-Favorite thing: Hard decision, I love the people, but I have to say Tito earns my respect. I’m not big on raiding, so any attempt to defend is honorable to me. For me, Tito is the French resistance, the knights Templar, the archangels of Nationstates. They always do what’s right, and don’t stab the region they were helping in the back.

Flemingisa-And finally, there has been rumors that you have the hottest body on the islands, is this true or is it just you sitting in the sun to much?

AquilaJordyn- As for the rumors, it’s universally accepted here on Nationstates. Many threads are devoted to discussing how I could simply be this attractive, Max barry is writing his next novel on the subject, and there was a security council proposal to condemn me for not letting people see my body more often, but it was struck down, for “hate speech towards the physically enhanced”.

Well our hearts and thoughts go out to the guy for his attempt at love. Go get her boy!

I think this one might go on longer... And it will get a little crammed up if it stays in here for too long. Further, they could have an editing section which is secure (passworded) to do the editing stuff.

that could work.. But it's ultimately up to Paffnia and the others if we're allowed to have one... I heard there is a limited amount of sub-boards but if we can have one I want us to have every available oppurtunity

I liked the in depth interview of a senior member of the islands because it gives you a flavor for the history of the region through the eyes of a person who has lived it. Interviews of past delegates makes you appreciate their style and experiences.
