The Armed Republic of Gonswanza is, for all intents and purposes, a democratic and heavily militarized country off the western coast of South America, being considered a part of the continent for the simplicity of geography. With a large and ever-growing military, along with psycho-jingoistic values instilled into the public and mandatory military service the country has been compared to the likes of North Korea, China and Israel. Yet, to counter this, their system of governance is more akin to that of Singapore, given the majority party has everything they need, legally, to control elections and repeatedly swing them in their favor against other minority parties which are still a part of the system.
Being founded by the British in the late 1700s simply by chance, the stray migrants founded themselves several camps around the ancient caldera, when the "islands" were one large ring of land. Local indigenous tribes didn't mind the new migrants, instead taking to them as if they were adventurers or traders, aiding in furthering their survival in a rather remote part of the world. However, the diseases that were brought with them would threaten the locals, almost driving them to extinction in spite of attempts to protect them from being killed off. Slaves from the Americas were also brought in, but it was quickly found that such an excess of man power was not necessary when the "land gave them her gifts almost for free, not needing excessive hands and labor to harvest such fruits." paired to more liberal and abolitionist views enforced by the indigenous populations. Hence, slavery was outlawed by 1780, after the first slaves arrived only 20 years earlier. By 1800, the lands were growing to be more cultured and populous even as wars were being waged elsewhere. By 1900, the first cities began to crop up, with the island being basically forgotten as a British colony and tossed aside before then, hence, it was effectively independent since day one... Whenever that was. When the Great War begun however, the ramshackle navy of ironclads had to fend off furious landgrabs from the United States and Mexico, with the latter being realized in a series of naval treaties to band against the former, leading to the "war of the sea" in 1914, where the United States was eventually driven off by an inferior Gonswanzan Navy. By 1939, Gonswanza knew of the threat that Imperial Japan would pose against them, along with fearing another war with the United States, hence they remained isolationist and neutral for the rest of the second World War, even with Mexico and Brazil joining the allies. By this time, the "ring" of land was now three islands, thanks to rising sea levels and some shifts in the land thanks to minor tremors. Now, going into the cold war, Gonswanza began to resort to militarization instead of isolation, boosting it's own self and even buying up weapons and ships from the Soviet Union to try to defend itself, while the Green Party came to power and later seized control of the island nation itself. In 1972, a contract for nuclear warheads fell through, forcing Gonswanzan to make it's own as they had the ICBMs necessary to deliver such a weapon at that time. By the early 2000s, the drone program was taking off at a rapid pace, with [atmospheric drones] and anti-sat weapons being delivered by 2018.
The current year is 2021, Gonswanza is a rising military power and bound to become a nuclear superpower, the first in the southern hemisphere. Russia, China and the US are at each other's necks, while Gonswanza is lazily swatting down surveillance satellites from China and the US in an attempt to ease up tensions. A global war grows more inevitable by the day as various global events push the powers to the edge. Could this bring about the end of the world?
